Book The Early Federation Movement of Australia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Early Federation Movement of Australia Classic Reprint written by C. D. Allin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Federation Movement of Australia It is especially appropriate that the nineteenth century, the history of which has been dominated by the spirit of nationalism, and which has witnessed the important federal unions of Switzer land, Canada and Germany, should also see its last days crowned by the unification of the segregated colonies of Australia into a strong federation under the flag of Great Britain. The federal state promises to be as distinctly the dominant type of modern governmental organization as the city state was of ancient Greece. For this reason alone, the Australian federation is especially worthy of study, ' as the latest product of the spirit of the age. Its history and its constitution are particularly valu able, as illustrative of the tendencies of the powerful social and economic forces of society, which enter so largely into the political life of the modern state. The Australian Common wealth Act is not only the most finished product of federal constitution making, embodying the experience of all previous federations, so far as they were found applicable to Australian conditions, but it is as well, one of the most democratic instru ments of government ever framed, expressive of the socialistic tendency of the rule of the working-man. The interest and significance of this event is intensified, if we judge of its im portance, not by theimpression it creates at the moment, but by the truer test of its potentiality in the political andjuristic world, in presenting to the nations of the East and West a new factor in international politics, and in offering to statesmen and jurists an unique model of constitution making. He would indeed be a bold political prophet who would venture to set definite limits to the future greatness and influence of the new federation under the Southern Cross. The history of the evolution of a nation is always a fascin ating and instructive study, more especially so when the new born state is possessed of almost unlimited resources, is inhabited by a race of high intellectual attainments and of liberal culture, and when its citizens, moreover, are among the keenest students of political and of sociological problems. Australia, by reason of her situation, of her history, and of her homogeneous population is an exceptionally favorable fieldfor political experiments, and fortunately her leaders have not been afraid to endeavor to solve some of the. Complex questions of modern social relations, which have daunted the statesmen of the old world. The record of the early stages of the federal movement, when a few chosen spirits were vainly gropingafter some scheme of intercolonial co-operation and unity, is equally valuable if not so interesting as the history of its consummation, in revealing to us the source of the spirit of Australian national ism, which has made federation both possible and actual. It is only in the light of this early struggle which brought out all the forces and issues of nationalism and provincialism, that we can properly interpret the events of the last few years. Book The Making of the Australian Commonwealth 1889 1900

Download or read book The Making of the Australian Commonwealth 1889 1900 written by Bernhard Ringrose Wise and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the Australian Commonwealth 1889-1900: A Stage in the Growth of the Empire This is not a histoz're documentee of the movement towards Australian Federation, - (that should be the work of an Australian University), - nor another study of the constitution, nor a memoir; but the record by an eye-witness of the making of the Common wealth during the critical period from 1889 to 1900, which aims at giving to a later generation a more Vivid picture of that time, and making intelligible the policy and passions of the contending parties, the personalities of the rival leaders, and the ebb and flow of popular sentiment which was the decisive factor in the great event. It is a story, which is worth the telling, of a time when high ideals inspired men to effort, and may repeat itself sooner than we think in a struggle for the closer Union of the British peoples. If the names of the actors be unfamiliar to English readers, let it be remembered that Galt, George Brown, Tupper, and John A. Macdonald were little known in England twelve years after the forma tion of the Dominion of Canada; and, that all, who do work for the Empire, have a place in its history, whether they inhabit London, Ottawa, or Sydney. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australasian Democracy A result of the limitation that I was compelled to impose upon myself will be observed in the apparent antiquity of the chapter dealing with Australian Federation but this is not so great as might have been anticipated, the new Federal Convention having drafted a Bill which is based, to a large extent, upon that of 1891. For pur poses of comparison I have, with the kind permis sion of the London agents of the Melbourne Argus, included an article in which that newspaper has summarised the provisions of the new Federal Constitution Bill. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Federated Australia, And, the Squatter's Story: Prize Essay and Novelette; A Practicable Scheme for the Federation of Australasia One of my companions was a young Englishman of aristocratic birth, whose friends were glad to be rid of, because of his fast and indolent habits; though I must say, that whilst with me he did not exhibit these failings, and a more honorable, faithful, hard-working young fellow than Cecil Maitland I never knew. He was daring and generous, a thorough scholar, and a pleasant companion. The o1er was a thrifty young Scotchman, who a few months before had run away from a vessel. He, too, was thoroughly reliable, of pleasant temperament and splendid physique. Mac. As we called him, was the life of our party. In his early days, in the Land o' Cakes, he had gained useful experience amongst sheep and cattle we therefore found him of very great service. Of myself little shall be said, except that I was the son of a well-known Anglican bishop, had received a good education, but, disliking the monotony of a profession, took to bush life. Book Australian Federation

On the happy accomplishment of the end of that long and interesting course of modern history, in the proclamation of the Commonwealth, and opening of its first Parliament, no one is personally to be congratulated more warmly than the former Prime Minister and present Agent-General of South Australia. Sir John Cockburn is not, like the great Victorian federalist, Mr Deakin, and many of the other Federal leaders, "native-born," and he settled in Australia only after having been a gold medallist of London University. No man, however, of home birth has more completely identified himself with Australia, both in his own colony, which has led the way in many Liberal movements, and in Australia as a whole. As he himself, I think, has written, the colony of South Australia has played a great part, if not a leading part, in the Federal movement. Book The Annotated Constitution of the Australian Commonwealth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Annotated Constitution of the Australian Commonwealth Classic Reprint written by John Quick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 1054 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annotated Constitution of the Australian Commonwealth Our chief aim has been a practical one. Clear as is the language of the Constitution, it cannot be fully understood without the study of a large correlated literature. The Federation of the Australian colonies has occupied the best energies of the statesmen and the people of Australia for many years; and this Constitution is the outcome of exhaustive debates, heated controversies, and careful com promises. It is an adaptation of the principles of British and colonial government to the federal system. Its language and ideas are drawn, partly from the model of all modern govern ments, the British Constitution itself; partly from the colonial Constitutions based on the British model; partly from the Federal Constitution of the United States of America; and partly from the semi-federal Constitution of the Dominion Of Canada; with such modifications as were suggested by the circumstances and needs of the Australian people. The Constitution of the Commonwealth, therefore, is not an isolated document. It has been built on traditional foundations. Its roots penetrate deep into the past. It embodies the best achievements Of political progress, and realizes the latest attainable ideals of liberty. It represents the aspirations of the Australian people in the direction of nationhood, so far as is consistent and in harmony with the solidarity of the Empire. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Federal Defence of Australasia This book should do very well without a Preface. It speaks for itself, and in prospecting to find the true solution of the Federal Defence of Australia, I hope to have found the true colour. My scheme will be regarded as an advance upon the Commandants' scheme, which has been circumscribed by political and retrenchment considerations. The Colonies will not always be preach ing retrenchment, therefore, the scheme which I venture to propound will be found both practical and permanent. I have duly weighed the Opinions and arguments of many naval and military experts, and out of their a priori thought, I have tried to make the subject plain to all those who love Australasia and the sea-girt isles of the Atlantic, from whose shores the Australian populations have sprung. We are all British yet, and especially when foreign nations seek to break up the British and Colonial Empire. May the people of the United Kingdom and the British Colonies never forget each other in peace or war be true to each other in the.
