Australia’s security, economic and political ties with the United States are fundamental to Australia's future. The previous government significantly intensified Australia’s relationship with the United States, and it is now in the best shape it has ever been in. In this regard, the smoothness with which the US alliance has transferred to the Rudd Government, is outstanding to the strength of the alliance that John Howard had recognized with the United States of America. This is a permanent legacy that will help Australia and hopefully the government in greater strategic relationships. In the past eleven and half years, both defence and economic ties were improved, with the Australia-United States treaty of Defence Trade Co-operation and United States-Australia free trade agreement correspondingly. Therefore, the Australia-US relationship should only strengthen in the next ten years built on shared values, interest, mutual respect and similar outlooks on global affairs. In this regard, I would argue that Australia at the moment is more dependent on China for its growing economy but initiatives such as the annual bilateral strategic dialogue between both Countries which the previous government initiated last year is an important step towards developing closer security links in the future. I am also confident that Australia escalating economic relationships with China will coincide with the greatest dialogue on security matters, which should reflect shared mutual interests and values. On the other hand, the United States have been building the security umbrella in Asia-Pacific after World War II, from Japan and South Korea in the North, to Philippine, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand in the South to protect its security and interests in Asia-Pacific from communist threats like communist China.

America supports a gun and war culture regardless of the costs, and Australia supports American adventurism unconditionally. Their focus on security emphasises war, not peace. America is floundering and appears to have lost its way. It needs friends that advise and encourage. As rich and powerful first-world nations, America and Australia share a problem: how to recalibrate their relationship to deliver peace and prosperity rather than conflict and disharmony. In The Odd Couple, Allan Behm suggests ways that America and Australia can transcend military glitz to strengthen well-being and human security worldwide. America needs a friend, not a flunkey, and Australia may become its best ally.

In October 2002, a terrorist attack on Western tourists in Bali, Indonesia, killed more than 200, including 88 Australians and seven Americans. A second terrorist bombing, which killed 23, including four Australians, was carried out in Bali in October 2005. The Australian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, was also bombed by members of Jemaah Islamiya (JI) in September 2004. The Howard Government's strong commitment to the United States in Afghanistan and Iraq and the recently negotiated bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Australia and the United States have strengthened what were already close ties between the two long-term allies. Despite the strong strategic ties between the United States and Australia, there have been some signs that the growing economic importance of China to Australia may influence Australia's external posture on issues such as Taiwan. Australia plays a key role in promoting regional stability in Southeast Asia and the Southwest Pacific. Australia has led peace-keeping efforts in the Asia-Pacific region, including East Timor and the Solomon Islands, and has supported U.S. efforts in the war against terrorism in Southeast Asia. Australia has also worked closely with Indonesia to counter terrorism in Southeast Asia.

Book excerpt: Australia has always been reliant on 'great and powerful friends' for its sense of national security and for direction on its foreign policy—first on the British Empire and now on the United States. Australia has actively pursued a policy of strategic dependence, believing that making a grand bargain with a powerful ally was the best policy to ensure its security and prosperity. Dangerous Allies examines Australia's history of strategic dependence and questions the continuation of this position. It argues that international circumstances, in the world and in the Western Pacific especially, now make such a policy highly questionable. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the United States has also changed dramatically, making it less relevant to Australia and a less appropriate ally on which Australia should rely. Malcolm Fraser argues that Australia should adopt a much greater degree of independence in foreign policy, and that we should no longer merely follow other nations into wars of no direct interest to Australia or Australia's security. He argues for an end to strategic dependence and for the timely establishment of a truly independent Australia.
