Book For Cap and Country

Download or read book For Cap and Country written by Jesse Hogan and published by HarperCollins Australia. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The personal stories behind one of Australia's most beloved sporting icons - the baggy green. Australian Test players, past and present, open up about the road from their backyards to the baggy green. Breathe in the mowed grass and linseed oil as they take their first steps to glory. Share with them the euphoria of their cap presentations. Immerse yourself in the wonder of Test triumphs and the despair of being dropped form the team. In sharing the players' stories - and disclosing how treasured Australian caps are kept under lock and key, in dank cupboards and stuffed in undies drawers - Jesse Hogan takes you inside their lounge rooms as well as cricket's dressing rooms. Their stories contain salutary lessons for the game's future. As such, this is a conversation about Australian cricket as much as it is a chat with its best players. And at its heart is the unifying force of the cap, under which all players are equals, no matter if they've played 168 Tests like Steve Waugh, or one like Bryce McGain. What began as a passion project for sports journalist Jesse Hogan and cricket agent Simon Auteri in 2015 - to interview Australian cricketers, past and present, on the significance of gaining their Test spots - became a story about the spirit of cricket and its power to bring us together. Just two weeks before the first draft was completed, tragedy struck. At the age of 33, Jesse Hogan suffered a devastating stroke that left him unable to speak, write or even walk. Following intensive rehabilitation and with immense support, Jesse made it back and finished the book with the help of fellow journalist Andrew Faulkner. For Cap and Country and its publication is about the importance of generosity, sportsmanship, perseverance and community to help us achieve our goals in life as much as in sport. Now cricket tragics like Jesse can finally enjoy these stories too.

Book Historical Dictionary of Australia

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Australia written by Norman Abjorensen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s development, from the most unpromising of beginnings as a British prison in 1788 to the prosperous liberal democracy of the present is as remarkable as is its success as a country of large-scale immigration. Since 1942 it has been a loyal ally of the United States and has demonstrated this loyalty by contributing troops to the war in Vietnam and by being part of the “coalition of the willing” in the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 and in operations in Afghanistan. In recent years, it has also been more willing to promote peace and democracy in its Pacific and Asian neighbors. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Australia covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 500 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Australia.

Book The British World and an Australian National Identity

Download or read book The British World and an Australian National Identity written by Jared van Duinen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamics of Anglo-Australian cricketing relations within the ‘British World’ in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It explores what these interactions can tell us about broader Anglo-Australian relations during this period and, in particular, the evolution of an Australian national identity. Sport was, and is, a key aspect of Australian culture. Jared van Duinen demonstrates how sport was used to rehearse an identity that would then emerge in broader cultural and political terms. Using cricket as a case study, this book contributes to the ongoing historiographical debate about the nature and evolution of an Australian national identity.

Book Glenn McGrath Line and Strength

Download or read book Glenn McGrath Line and Strength written by Daniel Lane and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From working the land in Narromine to winning cricket's World Cup three times, Glenn McGrath has always faced life with fierce determination and an unerring will to succeed, despite the odds. Following his retirement from international cricket, McGrath shares the story of his life - in cricket and off the field. Known as 'Pigeon', he won his baggy green cap in Perth in 1993 and went on to forge a brilliant career, retiring as cricket's most successful fast bowler with 563 Test wickets. McGrath entered Ashes folklore in 1997 when he destroyed England by taking 8 for 38 at Lord's, and he even scored a Test half-century with the bat. With leg spinner Shane Warne, he formed the most devastating bowling combination in Test history. Glenn McGrath's most meaningful achievements, however, have been off the field. With his wife Jane, who battled breast and bone cancers, he established the McGrath Foundation, a major fundraiser for and supporter of people with breast cancer. In the book, in their own words, the McGraths discussed their ongoing battles with the disease. Line and Strength is the tell-all story of an Australian country boy who took on the world. After battling cancer for 11 years, Jane died on 22 June 2008. Glenn is now the Chairman of the McGrath Foundation and continues to fundraise tirelessly to place breastcare nurses in hospitals.

Book Golden Boy

Download or read book Golden Boy written by Christian Ryan and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Voted Wisden Cricket Monthly's best cricket book ever in 2019** WINNER, BEST CRICKET BOOK, BRITISH SPORTS BOOK AWARDS 2010 _________________ Golden Boy is a blistering exposé of the tumultuous Lillee/Marsh/Chappells era of Australian cricket, as viewed through the lens of flawed genius Kim Hughes. _________________ Kim Hughes was one of the most majestic and daring batsmen to play for Australia in the last 40 years. Golden curled and boyishly handsome, his rise and fall as captain and player is unparalleled in cricketing history. He played several innings that count as all-time classics, but it's his tearful resignation from the captaincy that is remembered. Insecure but arrogant, abrasive but charming; in Hughes' character were the seeds of his own destruction. Yet was Hughes' fall partly due to those around him, men who are themselves legends in Australia's cricketing history? Lillee, Marsh, the Chappells, all had their agendas, all were unhappy with his selection and performance as captain - evidenced by Dennis Lillee's tendency to aim bouncers relentlessly at Hughes' head during net practice. Hughes' arrival on the Test scene coincided with the most turbulent time Australian cricket has ever seen - first Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket, then the rebel tours to South Africa. Both had dramatic effects on Hughes' career. As he traces the high points and the low, Christian Ryan sheds new and fascinating light on the cricket - and the cricketers - of the times.

Book The Penguin History of Australian Cricket

Download or read book The Penguin History of Australian Cricket written by Chris Harte and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian cricket is different. The club with which I played cricket at grade level in Sydney, Central Cumberland, originally the Parramatta club but sometimes known as Cumberland and now again as Parramatta, was a focal point of cricket in the early days of the Colony and I grew up with a love of the written word of cricket history. Like any other Australian youngster living in a country area, I watched matches between adjoining towns and played on antbed or polished concrete pitches then, when moving to Sydney, I played 'Test' matches on dirt pitches in a paddock and on concrete pitches, sometimes with a type of matting over them, in an open park. Rarely though did I play on turf, and this has always been one of the big differences between Australian cricket and English cricket. That need not come as a shock but it should be borne in mind when reading anything connected with the game which has been part of Australian culture for a little less than two hundred years. The emphasis was on rough facilities and cricket played in the early days in a harsh outback. From those areas come some of the greatest cricketers ever to appear at International level, cricketers who followed on from the standards set by W L. Murdoch's team in 1882. It was not a matter of living in the past because I have long held the belief that, as we approach the twenty-first century, the players are every bit as good or better than those who went before them. It is very important though, that occurrences prior to this modern era should be correctly recorded and this should be done in a fashion which the reader will find fulfilling. It is essential in modern times, with the emphasis on television and videotape libraries of history, that the written word should not be discarded. It was time for the history of Australian cricket to be updated and for further research to be done on matters which for many years have been lacking in some detail. A wise choice has been made in asking Chris Harte to do the job because few pay more attention to detail or have the ability to find new aspects of a subject where, at first glance, the facts might appear to have been exhausted. There are many these days who are more interested in matters other than history, but I have always been fascinated by the history of cricket. The story of that first Australian victory in England in 1882 made nerve-tingling reading for me as a youngster, and it hasn't changed these days when again I browse through the Bell's Life account of that wonderful tour. For an Australian team to have pulled off the stunning victory assumes pride of place with me in the whole of Australian cricket history. The prime requirement of a book of this kind is accuracy and Chris Harte is accurate. Another requirement is to probe and he does that well, so well that some of his research has produced new information about various aspects of Australian cricket. No game contains more good or ill fortune than cricket and Mr Harte has had the good fortune to find this new material and we are all in his debt. The saga of Bill McElhone and Ernie Bean is one which has been mentioned in early histories but not in the fascinating detail shown here, and any modem history must include the arrival of World Series Cricket and the changed structure of the game in Australia. Australian cricket has gone through some turbulent times over the period from 1803 to 1993 and Chris Harte has caught my attention by chronicling matters of which previously I had no knowledge. From what is written in the following pages, it seems we should await with great anticipation the details of the finale of World Series Cricket and how the agreement between the Australian Cricket Board and World Series Cricket was signed. That will be no more intriguing than the indication that there were reasons Sir Donald Bradman decided not to renominate for his administrative position i

Book Border s Battlers

Download or read book Border s Battlers written by Michael Sexton and published by Affirm Press. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It?s the 1986 tour of India, and Australian cricket is reeling from the loss of key players to retirement and rebel tours. Few give Australia a chance against a surging India, and even Allan Border doubts his ability to lead this team. What follows is one of the most titanic struggles in cricket history. Played in oppressive conditions, the first Test in Madras (now Chennai) swung like a pendulum. Tensions reached boiling point on and off the field. Dean Jones?s 210 was one of the gutsiest Australian knocks ever, Greg Matthews bowled for most of the final day (in a jumper!) and Ray Bright took five wickets despite being seriously ill. The climactic and controversial final ball forced a tie for only the second time in Test history and set a course for Allan Border to remain as captain. In Border?s Battlers, Michael Sexton details the momentous occasion when Australia drew a line in the dust of Madras, and drew inspiration from the fight. The team returned to Madras the next year to launch a winning World Cup campaign as rank outsiders and the seeds of a new golden age of Australian cricket were sown.

Book The Cricket War

Download or read book The Cricket War written by Gideon Haigh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of The Times' 50 Greatest Sports Books In May 1977, the cricket world awoke to discover that a thirty-nine-year-old Sydney Businessman called Kerry Packer had signed thirty-five elite international players for his own televised 'World Series'. The Cricket War is the definitive account of the split that changed the game on the field and on the screen. In helmets, under lights, with white balls, and in coloured clothes, the outlaw armies of Ian Chappell, Tony Greig and Clive Lloyd fought a daily battle of survival. In boardrooms and courtrooms Packer and cricket's rulers fought a bitter war of nerves. A compelling account of the top-class sporting life, The Cricket War also gives a unique insight into the motives and methods of the man who became Australia's richest, and remained so, until the day he died. It was the end of cricket as we knew it – and the beginning of cricket as we know it. Gideon Haigh has published over thirty books, over twenty of them about cricket. This edition of The Cricket War, Gideon Haigh's first book about cricket originally published in 1993, has been updated with new photographs and a new introduction by the author.
