Book Australia s Engagement with Economic and Social Rights

Download or read book Australia s Engagement with Economic and Social Rights written by Russell Solomon and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contemporary socio-legal study of Australia’s protection of economic and social rights. Despite Australia’s hortatory language of compliance with international rights standards, its translation of these standards into domestic law and policy has been found wanting. In considering Australia’s compliance across the policy areas of health, housing, labour and social security, it is argued that Australia’s failings can be understood in terms of its institutional framework. This framework provides incomplete legal protection for rights and leaves that protection almost exclusively in the realm of politics and policymaking, an arena still dominated by neoliberalism and a political culture averse to the protection and promotion of economic and social rights.

Book A Charter of Rights for Australia

Download or read book A Charter of Rights for Australia written by George Williams and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Australia does not have a bill or charter of rights, which means there is no comprehensive law that enshrines human rights in Australia - even though these laws are standard in the rest of the developed world. So what does this mean for the rights of Australian citizens? In this fully revised fourth edition of A Charter of Rights for Australia, George Williams and Daniel Reynolds show that human rights are not adequately protected in Australia, contrary to what many of us think. Using some pressing examples, they demonstrate how the rights of people at the margins of our society are violated in often shocking ways. Several states and territories have adopted their own charters of rights, or have a charter well underway. This book's argument that the time has come to adopt a charter at the federal level is more urgent than ever."

This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study primarily explores whether conflicts between patents and human rights in the context of access to medicines are inevitable, or whether patents can be made to serve human rights. The author argues that it is necessary to have a deepened understanding of each of the two sets of norms that govern this issue, that is, patent law and international human rights law. The chapters investigate the relevant dimensions of patent law and analyse particular human rights bearing upon the issue of intellectual property and access to medicines.
