This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australia, Its Rise, Progress, and Present Condition In New Zealand, while the north has been discon carted by the spreading disaffection of the native races, the south has been alive with energy and tumult by the discovery of a rich gold-field. Regarding the Native difficulty, the colonial legislature had expressed its loyalty to the Queen, and the desire to put down any native-king movement among the aborigines. A new ministry, composed of Mr Fox and others, who had opposed the war, and who were inclined to some extent to justify the natives, had come into office. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Homes: The Rise, Progress, Present Position, and Future Prospects of Each of the Australian Colonies and New Zealand, Regarded as Homes for All Classes of Emigrants Having thus given a reason why I think such a book as I am writing Should be presented to the public; having stated that I write from no mere hearsay, but as having for so long a time dwelt amid the scenes I describe; and having also re moved what might have raised a prejudice against myself as a chronicler of Australian history, I will without further preface address myself to the task before me. And if, within the compass of a small volume, I can take you out to the colonies, travel with you from one to the other of them, tracing by the way their rise, progress, present condition, and future prospects, and then bring you safely home on a voyage by steam, round that region of storms, Cape Horn, I think you will agree with me that I have beaten the electric telegraph hollow. But who shall go on the voyage? For whom are. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book First Twenty Years of Australia

Download or read book First Twenty Years of Australia written by James Bonwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Twenty Years of Australia: A History Founded on Official Documents The story of the Early Days in Australia is one full of interest to many more than Australian settlers or the Australian born. It so differs from the tale to be told of present life there, as if centuries had passed in the interval. Dark as the chronicle may be, it is highly instructive and suggestive. We have in that gloomy and often forbidding picture of humanity a means of gauging the immense social progress of the colonies. Even in the worst phases of society at that remote period we fail not to detect some bright and pleasing features, indications of that struggle between light and darkness which ultimately led to the opening day. We have seen men and women, steeped in vice and misery, from neglect of Church and of State in Europe, emerging from poverty and moral degradation into respectability and purity. Book The History of South Australia From Its Foundation to the Year of Its Jubilee Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of South Australia From Its Foundation to the Year of Its Jubilee Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Edwin Hodder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of South Australia From Its Foundation to the Year of Its Jubilee, Vol. 1 IT was the lifelong wish of Mr. George Fife Angas, one of the Fathers and Founders of South Australia, that a History of the Colony of his adoption, and which he was mainly instrumental in establishing, should be written. To this end he collected a vast number of documents from all available sources, and for many years employed a secretary to set them in order, hoping some day to write the History himself. But that day never came, and in 1879 Mr. Angas passed away. Among his papers several were found that showed how intensely keen his desire was that a full and compre hensive History, giving the story of the rise and progress of the colony, should be written. His son, the Hon. J. H. Angas, Member of the Legislative Council of South Australia, determined that the wish should be fulfilled, and kindly placed in my hands the whole of the valuable and voluminous papers. Of this material I have availed myself freely, and I have also drawn from Memoirs, Diaries, Travels, Parliamentary Debates, as well as from the Colonial N ev'vspapers. Book The History of Broken Hill

Download or read book The History of Broken Hill written by Leonard Samuel Curtis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Broken Hill: Its Rise and Progress From stem to stern, from every port, and high above on the funnels and masts, the glittering lights were shining. On the right stood the sister ships, The South, Block and The Central, somewhat hidden to view, with only a high light or two visible; while on the left, anchored side by side, were Block The British, The Junction, The Junction North, and far away in the distance The North. Let him who has never witnessed this sight or noticed the marvellous resemblance depicted, ascend the Hill any night, and he will be amply repaid by the splendid panoramic view which stretches-out on either side, all brilliantly lit up with thousands of lights, forming a perfect picture for the artist's brush. It is of these Ships, and their actions - the progress they have made - the course they have run - and the speed attained - that this book is written, but it is first needful to secure from the relics of the past their origin and discovery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Making of Australian History, Vol. 1 of 2 In a work of this kind it has not been found pos sible, and it has not been desired, to suppress my personality. But my wish has been that my public actions should be placed in the full light of day, and left naked and unscreened to public criticism. What ever my work may amount to, it cannot be made more by words from me or from too tolerant friends, and it cannot be made less by the comments of adversaries. It must stand or be swept away according to the nature of its substance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections of Australia and Elsewhere, 1842-1914 Show that Colonists, though living far away from the land of their origin, still remember the Mother Country, and regard her with the affection due to her by her children. The later portion, it is hoped, may prove of interest as representing the thought and action of an average man who has had to face problems, some of which have been and, in all probability, will continue to be, the subject of discussion and legislative action in the Parliament of Great Britain. In all that I did or attempted in legislation, my desire was not blindly to follow any leader, but, to do what I believed to be best for the country of my adoption, apart from mere party considerations. Throughout my parliamentary career, which began more than forty years ago, I have been more or less handicapped by the necessity of maintaining myself and those dependent on me by my professional earnings. Often when I would willingly have de voted all my thought to the solution of difficult questions I have had to scratch for sixpences. He knows that it is the easiest thing possible for your up-to-date journalist to rush across to japan or Siberia and to be back in six months with the mss. Of a book that will exhaust the subject. He knows this; and he is bound to admit that he may be lacking in that breezy and picturesque point of view which follows naturally on an acquaintance of ten weeks, but is liable to vanish with a knowledge of ten years. Book Shut Your Mouth

Download or read book Shut Your Mouth written by George Catlin and published by . This book was released on 1869 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.
