Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miner's Right: A Tale of the Australian Goldfields I took my five-year - old by the head and raced for the hedge and ditch. He gave a highly theatrical jump into the road just by the side of the carriage. I saw both the ladies gaze with astonishment as I sent him up to the head of the reinless carriage horse. 'help us, Oh help us cried Mrs. Allerton, or we shall be dashed to pieces.' The younger lady did not speak, but looked at me with her pleading eyes in such a way that I felt I could have thrown myself under the wheels then and there to have been Of the slightest service. Nothing so sacrificial was required of me. Jamming my youngster, fortunately one of the bold temperate sort, against the near side carriage horse's shoulder, I got hold of the loose rein, and dragged at his mouth in a way that must have hurt his feelings, if he had any thereabouts. The coachman seconded me well and prudently. Between us we stopped the carriage within a (quarter of a mile, and saved the impending smash. The rein was knotted, the bits altered to the lower bar, and peace was restored. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In a New World: Or Among the Gold Fields of Australia Astout gentleman of middle age and two boys were sitting in the public room of a modest inn in Melbourne. The gentleman was known to the public as Professor Hemmenway, who announced himself on the programme of his entertainment as "The Magician of Madagascar," though he freely confessed to his confidential friends that he had never seen the island of that name. The two boys were Harry Vane and Jack Pendleton, boys of sixteen. One had come to Australia as assistant to the professor, and had been accustomed to sing one or two popular songs at the magical entertainments which he gave, besides rendering himself generally useful. Jack Pendleton was a young sailor, who had resolved to try his fortune in the new country, either at the mines or in any other employment offering fair compensation, before resuming his profession. Harry and the professor had been passengers on board Jack's ship, and the two boys had struck up an enduring friendship. More than that, I am a real gold digger - very real, indeed - and the holder of a Miner's Right, a wonderful document, printed and written on parchment, precisely as follows. I ought to know it by heart, good reason have I therefor, I and mine. Here it is, life size, in full. Shall I ever take it out and look at it by stealth in happy days to come, I wonder? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gold Fields of Australia: Notes on the Distribution of Gold Throughout the World, Including Australia, California, and Russia It is interesting to look back and to make out the development of events, but it is no less so to see them pass before our eyes to be present and to take part in them, and we have now arrived at a period far more important than that which we have just contemplated. Circumstances external to those which we have for our special subject and consideration, have been no less in fluential than they in giving it this character. The establish; nient of the locomotive and the ocean steamer, the laying down of the telegraphic wire, the discovery of electro-metallurgy, and the application of the daguerreotype, create a new era' in the practical arts; but never, perhaps, has the progress of science been more extraordinary. The advancement of the electro magnetic sciences, of geology, of ethnology, and of the econo mical sciences, has done much to liberate mankind from de pendence and dogmatism, and to direct them to original research, while there have been those events in politics, in religion, and in social economy, which show that some great action on the human mind is in progress. At this time, when in addition to the gold workings of Russia and Virgin discoveries in Australia and California have opened a eld for enter prise, which has set the nations of the world in movement, the position of the English race is still more striking than it was three centuries and a half ago. By two great empires it now keeps a great part of the world under its influence; on the shores of the Atlantic, of the Pacific, and of the Indian Ocean, our settlements are the means of awakening enterprise, and give us the opportunity of profiting by each new event; from the Icy Sea to the Gulf of Mexico, America belongs to our people Australia we have encompasse'd, and marked out its destinies, and in the south of Asia hundreds of millions already own us as their masters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rough and Smooth: Or, Ho! For an Australian Gold Field Perhaps I never told you why we left a comfortable home, to travel to that distant region. The reasons were simply these: your father, from having read a great deal about Australia, had long looked, with a wishful eye, towards that great colony as a future home - the fine climate, increasing prosperity, and great natural advantages of which, were to be desired for his children. All obstacles seemed removed to our trying this fancied elysium in the summer of 1852, by the ill health of your father requiring a sea voyage, and by the cutting of our strongest tie to Canada, in the death of my widowed mother. 80 we went. I was urged to remain at home, while papa went first and tried it; but as my home was where he was, I would not consent, and we were not separated. Our party consisted of papa and myself; my sister, who was then a little girl; my brother, a young lad who would not be left behind both orphans; G., our only child, three years of age; her nurse, Ellen, and two young gentlemen who were going out to this new country under your father's care.
