Book Australia Migration and Empire

Download or read book Australia Migration and Empire written by Philip Payton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-12 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection explores how migrants played a major role in the creation and settlement of the British Empire, by focusing on a series of Australian case studies. Despite their shared experiences of migration and settlement, migrants nonetheless often exhibited distinctive cultural identities, which could be deployed for advantage. Migration established global mobility as a defining feature of the Empire. Ethnicity, class and gender were often powerful determinants of migrant attitudes and behaviour. This volume addresses these considerations, illuminating the complexity and diversity of the British Empire’s global immigration story. Since 1788, the propensity of the populations of Britain and Ireland to immigrate to Australia varied widely, but what this volume highlights is their remarkable diversity in character and impact. The book also presents the opportunities that existed for other immigrant groups to demonstrate their loyalty as members of the (white) Australian community, along with notable exceptions which demonstrated the limits of this inclusivity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These papers capture the pluralist phenomenon of two of the largest immigrant-receiving countries of all time. Within this 200+ page volume, then, is to be found a truly informative mass of data (complete with graphs, tables and statistics) and learned analyses pertaining to the twin-focus of its title which will serve as a valuable tool of reference and reflection by all who have an interest in the subject. Ramnik Shah, Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Law This timely book examines the immense surges in immigration since the mid-1990s in Australia and the United States, two of the world s most important settler-receiving countries. Australia s shift to a points-based, skills-oriented system is contrasted with the political deadlock that has prevented any basic change in US immigration policy during this period. Focusing on immigration policy trends, effects on labour markets, successes and failures in integrating massive numbers of new immigrants, and the future of multiculturalism, the book ponders many of the policy dilemmas that confront both countries. Drawing on extensive research findings in the field of immigration policy, this book will prove a fascinating read for both scholars and postgraduate students working on immigration, as well as undergraduates studying courses on Australia and comparisons of the Australian and American policy arenas. Public servants engaged in administering Australian and US immigration policies will also find this book invaluable.

Book The Other Australia

Download or read book The Other Australia written by Brian Murphy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-09-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the patterns and impact of immigration to Australia since 1945, focusing on immigrants from non-English-speaking backgrounds who came to New South Wales. Australia has been diversified by the range of immigrants who have come to its shores, a diversification that has been welcomed by some and vehemently opposed by others. The book describes the personal experience of many newcomers to Australia, who came as displaced persons, refugees, on business migration programs or independently. Their testaments show that while some were invited and encouraged to share in the Australian experiment, others have been treated as intruders.

Book British Emigration to Australia

Download or read book British Emigration to Australia written by R.T. Appleyard and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1964-12-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year nearly 30,000 Britons emigrate to Australia under the Assisted Passages Scheme. In return for near-free transport they are required only to stay a minimum of two years in Australia. Are these persons the ne'er-do-wells of British society, the unskilled misfits who have not been able to succeed in Britain? Do they base their decisions to emigrate on reliable information and study economic opportunities in other overseas countries before choosing Australia? To what extent do relatives and friends in Australia and the fact that it is a British country influence their decisions? Why do they leave their homeland – inequality of opportunity; a hostile class structure; the climate? What do they know about the country many of them will never leave and what do they hope to achieve by going there? In 1959 Dr Appleyard and a team of interviewers set out to find the answers to these questions. They conducted long interviews with nine hundred British families (and single persons) just before they sailed for Australia. This book contains the results of the interviews set in the background of post-war emigration to Australia, demographic and economic conditions in each country, government policies which have been formulated to meet these conditions, and actual differences in wage, social services, and the ownership of houses and consumer durables between the United Kingdom and Australia.

Book Destination Australia

Download or read book Destination Australia written by Eric Richards and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1901 most Australians were loyal, white subjects of the British Empire with direct connections to Britain. Within a hundred years, following an unparalleled immigration program, its population was one of the most diverse on earth. No other country has achieved such radical social and demographic change in so short a time. Destination Australia tells the story of this extraordinary transformation. Against the odds, this change has caused minimal social disruption and tension. While immigration has generated some political and social anxieties, Australia has maintained a stable democracy and a coherent social fabric. One of the impressive achievements of this book is in explaining why this might be so. Eric Richards recounts the experiences of many individual migrants from all over the world, examines the dramas and challenges of officials involved in this grand experiment and ends up telling a truly remarkable story. Compelling and revealing, Destination Australia is essentially the Australian story of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience and Representation: Contemporary Perspectives on Migration in Australia provides a critical overview of influential theoretical perspectives and recent empirical material in the fields of migration, race, culture and politics. With a primary focus on Australia, the book explores the complexities surrounding migration; sets out the most appropriate frameworks to understand ethnicity and racism; and assesses the utility of the concepts of globalisation, transnationalism and multiculturalism for interpreting contemporary society. Specific chapters explore the experiences of migrants within the context of urban environments; the vexed issue of national identity; the meaning of home; and the ways that migrants are currently represented in the media, literature and film. Experience and Representation will be of interest to scholars of migration and those studying social theory, politics and the media.

Book Nations of Immigrants

Download or read book Nations of Immigrants written by Gary P. Freeman and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration has profoundly shaped the national development of countries like the United States and Australia, who were both founded as settler societies. They have both been transformed by successive waves of immigration, first from Europe, and then from every other part of the world. The policies that these countries have enforced regarding immigration, recruitment, and settlement have had as equally far-reaching consequences for the oppressed and hopeful peoples of the world. With the current ongoing changes in the international arena, Canada, Australia, and the United States are still the primary countries to which most migrate. Surprisingly, nothing has been written to compare these countries' immigration experiences and there is little evidence to exchange of government information on policies relating to the field. Nations of Immigrants bridges these academic and governmental gaps with the first comparison of immigration policy in Australia and the United States. The work is divided into four sections: immigration regulation and control, economic effects of immigration, settlement issues, and multiculturalism and conflict. Written by scholars and professionals from both shores of the Pacific, this work clearly identifies pertinent aspects in the comparison and investigates how policymakers might learn from one another. This work is also essential for students and scholars to better understand the changing dynamics of the immigration history and policies of these countries.

Book Australia Britain and Migration 1915 1940

Download or read book Australia Britain and Migration 1915 1940 written by Michael Roe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Australia's post-war immigration program is well known, but little has been written about migration to Australia between the wars. This 1995 book is a systematic study of assisted emigration from Britain to Australia during the inter-war years. It looks at the British and Australian politicians and bureaucrats involved in the program and the half-million migrants who uprooted themselves. While their imperial ties were significant, the book shows that British and Australian governments acted in their own interests, using migration to meet their different needs, with little regard for the migrants themselves. Michael Roe shows that the Anglo-Australian relationship was rife with contradictions and these often came to a head in the debates over migration. Not only is the book an important study of imperial relations in the 1920s and 1930s, it describes an important and overlooked aspect of Australian political and social history.

Book Becoming Australian

Download or read book Becoming Australian written by Brian Galligan and published by Melbourne University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2013 is the 40th anniversary of the end of the 'White Australia policy'. In these four decades Australia's immigration policy has shifted from a primary concern with cultural homogeneity or Britishness to a focus on demand-based skills through an increasingly fine-tuned system of points tests, occupation lists and employer-sponsored visas. Despite disproportionate politicisation of asylum seekers in recent public discourse, the intake of refugees and humanitarian entrants has remained relatively small. While Australia's contemporary migrant and refugee intake is truly multicultural, and governments continue to adhere to an official multicultural policy, integration into the Australian community and culture has been the dominant process, especially for second and third generation Australians. Australian identity and citizenship have changed in the last forty years, making Australia and its people more pluralistic and richly diverse. Becoming Australian focuses on the ways in which migrants and refugees meet the challenges of 'becoming Australian' and the transformative process for Australia and its people as they incorporate the continuing influx of multicultural peoples.
