Book Austen Tayshus

Download or read book Austen Tayshus written by Ross Fitzgerald and published by The GHR Press/Hale & Iremonger. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powerfully written by controversial author-broadcaster Ross Fitzgerald and comedy writer Rick Murphy, Austen Tayshus: Merchant of Menace is a no holds-barred biography of Australia’s edgiest comedian; a man rightly regarded as the nation’s most dangerous and subversive performer. Austen Tayshus is the creation of Sandy Gutman, a shy, intelligent, highly cultured and observant son of Judaism; an actor and award-winning filmmaker, strict vegetarian and father. He retains a loyal following within the arts community and his fans include international film stars, world famous artists and a former Australian prime minister. He is also the great outsider of Australian show business; a raging intellectual punk who seeks out apathy, hypocrisy and mediocrity, and stomps on them until they are dead. This brilliantly written biography uncovers the complicated personality of a stand-up comedian driven to perform, a man who lives in the shadow of a great tragedy.

Book Sharpest

Download or read book Sharpest written by Lowell Tarling and published by ETT Imprint. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lowell Tarling recorded Martin Sharp's life, and his effect on his friends, over twenty years. Now two volumes in one, in advance of the film of these books - GHOST TRAIN... Sharp: The Road to Abraxas - Part One, 1942-1979 Sharper: Bringing It All Back Home - Part Two, 1980-2013 'Like the Ancient Mariner, it's also a ghastly tale. I could understand the events at Luna Park a bit. I was trying to understand them and then suddenly there was this poetic language working to say: this is a crucifixion, Golgotha, death by fire. And then it starts to fit into Apocalyptic vision. It was Abraxas if you like - the dark face and the light face. To look upon Abraxas is blindness. To know it is sickness. To worship it is death. To fear it is wisdom. To assist it not is redemption. I don't know what it means. I've never been able to work it out. You get a Pop Art Parallel. It was the Year of the Child, the place of Golgotha, the Place of the Skull, and the Ghost Train. You then get these events that are caused by plotting, not caring for kids, carelessness, living a human life - the way of the world.' - Martin Sharp, 4 March 1984

Book Fifty Years Sober

Download or read book Fifty Years Sober written by Ross Fitzgerald and published by Hybrid Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The reality is that if I hadn't stopped drinking and drugging at twenty-five years of age, I wouldn't have made twenty-six." This is Ross Fitzgerald's 42nd book, an updated edition of his 2010 book My Name is Ross. Although he has now succeeded in not drinking alcohol or using drugs for 50 years, in this revised edition the author still calls himself an alcoholic, and pays extended tribute to the role of Alcoholics Anonymous in keeping him on the wagon. His involvement in AA has become a way of life; he still attends two or three meetings a week. A key aspect of AA's therapeutic process involves what can be termed the mechanism of surrender. Instead of telling alcoholics to use their willpower, control their drinking or pull up their socks, AA suggests that a much more efficacious strategy is to admit that, at least in relation to alcohol, they are beaten. With his insight into the scourge of numerous kinds of addiction, Fitzgerald traces the journey of many alcoholics and drug addicts. In this brutally honest and intimate portrayal of his fascinating life - his struggles as well as his successes - Fitzgerald doesn't shy away from his difficult times and regrets, but ultimately has written an uplifting and inspiring book. With the prevalence of alcohol in our daily lives for every celebration or sad occasion, a book like this is needed more than ever.

Book Farce

  • Author : Jessica Milner Davis
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351520245
  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book Farce written by Jessica Milner Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farce has always been relegated to the lowest rung of the ladder of dramatic genres. Distinctions between farce and more literary comic forms remain clouded, even in the light of contemporary efforts to rehabilitate this type of comedy. Is farce really nothing more than slapstick-the "putting out of candles, kicking down of tables, falling over joynt-stools," as Thomas Shadwell characterized it in the seventeenth century? Or was his contemporary, Nahum Tate correct when he declared triumphantly that "there are no rules to be prescribed for that sort of wit, no patterns to copy; and 'tis altogether the creature of imagination"? Davis shows farce to be an essential component in both the comedic and tragic traditions. Farce sets out to explore the territory of what makes farce distinct as a comic genre. Its lowly origins date back to the classic Graeco-Roman theatre; but when formal drama was reborn by the process of elaboration of ritual within the mediaeval Church, the French term "farce" became synonymous with a recognizable style of comic performance. Taking a wide range of farces from the briefest and most basic of fair-ground mountebank performances to fully-fledged five-act structures from the late nineteenth century, the book reveals the patterns of comic plot and counter-plot that are common to all. The result is a novel classification of farce-plots, which serves to clarify the differences between farce and more literary comic forms and to show how quickly farce can shade into other styles of humor. The key is a careful balance between a revolt against order and propriety, and a kind of Realpolitik which ultimately restores the social conventions under attack. A complex array of devices in such things as framing, plot, characterization, timing and acting style maintain the delicate balance. Contemporary examples from the London stage bring the discussion u

Book The Phantom Unmasked

Download or read book The Phantom Unmasked written by Kevin Patrick and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Superman, before Batman, there was—the Phantom! Making its debut as an American newspaper comic strip in 1936, The Phantom was the forerunner of the comic-book superhero genre that today animates vast billion-dollar franchises spanning print, film, television, video games, and licensed merchandise. But you’ve probably never heard of it—you probably think Superman inaugurated the genre. That’s because, despite its American origins, The Phantom comic strip has enjoyed far greater popularity with international audiences, most notably in Australia, Sweden, and India, where it has appeared in newspapers, magazines, and comic books. The paradox of the character’s relative obscurity in the United States, offset by his phenomenal success in these three markedly different countries, is the subject of The Phantom Unmasked. By tracing the publication history of The Phantom in magazines and comic books across international markets since the mid-1930s, author Kevin Patrick delves into the largely unexplored prehistory of modern media licensing industries. He also explores the interconnections between the cultural, political, economic, and historical factors that fueled the character’s international popularity. The Phantom Unmasked offers readers a nuanced study of the complex cultural flow of American comic books around the world. Equally important, to provide a rare glimpse of international comics fandom, Patrick surveyed the Phantom’s “phans”—as they call themselves—and lets them explain how and why they came to love the world’s first masked superhero.

Book Sharper 1980 2013

Download or read book Sharper 1980 2013 written by Lowell Tarling and published by ETT Imprint. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Sharp was an integral part of international Pop Art in the 1960s, magnified through his covers for OZ magazine in Sydney and London, his covers for Cream, and posters of Dylan, Hendrix and Donovan. His efforts at making The Yellow House and Luna Park cultural precincts, were aided by his screen prints and exhibitions to flaunt the work of others, especially the singer Tiny Tim. In this second of two volumes, Lowell Tarling offers us a way into the enigmatic and reclusive artist, through his extensive interviews with Sharp and all of his trusted friends, touching on the many dramas of life at Sharp's home studio, Wirian; his productions and search for meaning with regard to the Luna Park Fire; his spiritual search and death in 2013. 'I think what Lowell has done here is admirable, removing himself from the narrative. This book will be of interest to a wider audience who don't even know who Martin is. I predict this book will become a genuine hit.' - Peter Kingston.

  • ISBN : 1775592987
  • Pages : 648 pages

Download or read book Australia Rocks written by Lucy Desoto and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian rock music has a rich history of performers and bands that have created not just the soundtrack for Australian lives but have also shaped the international music scene. In the early days of the 1950s and ‘60s, Australian rock saw performers like Johnny O’Keefe and The Easybeats. The 1970s saw Cold Chisel and AC/DC, among others, performing to packed halls locally. AC/DC turned this into international success, blasting through three decades of touring and performing. However, it was only in the 1980s and 1990s that Australian rock truly made its mark on the international stage with iconic bands such as Men at Work, Midnight Oil and INXS. Australia Rocks brings the bands and the times to life through unique photographs and evocative text. Written by a rock musician, it also goes beyond the ‘big names’ to highlight the many independent, often lesser-known performers who played such an integral part in shaping the industry, and shines a light on how rock music was not only influenced by global events (the Vietnam War, for example) but also formed part of enormous cultural shifts (the Swinging Sixties, the protest movement, etc). From the demure dance halls of the 1950s to the smoke-filled pubs of the 1970s and the packed concerts of the 1990s and beyond, Australia Rocks will have music lovers dusting off their vinyl collection and remembering the good times.

Book excerpt: The authorities on all things bogan and authors of THINGS BOGANS LIKE are back with an historical, sociological, geographic and cultural study that traces bogan culture back to society's very foundation. Identifying prototypical and stereotypical bogans through time, they examine the bogan of the 19th century and their pre-war descendants, before moving onto the speciman often considered the quintessential bogan, identified by a love of '80s metal, flannelette and Victoria Bitter. They then track the bogan's leap into the 21st century - where they can be seen across the country, clad in garish garb, holding their nationalism close to their chest, and slavishly following every celebrity trend. BOGANOMICS is an important book for all Australians as understanding is the bridge to unity. Read this book to broaden your knowlege ... or to laugh ... a lot.
