Book Physics of the Aurora and Airglow

Download or read book Physics of the Aurora and Airglow written by Joseph W. Chamberlain and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Geophysics Series, Volume 2: Physics of the Aurora and Airglow explores certain physical aspects of aurora and airglow. This volume is composed of 13 chapters and begins with surveys of the theory and spectroscopic and photometric analyses of radiation from the upper atmosphere. The subsequent chapters treat the geographic distribution of aurora and its physical processes in the atmosphere. Other chapters examine the theory of hydrogen emission in aurora, resonance scattering by atmospheric sodium, the excitation of the oxygen red lines in the airglow, and an atlas of the auroral spectrum. A chapter focuses on the analysis of twilight observations for emission heights. The concluding chapters discuss the theory of day airglow, as well as the spectral photometry and excitation of the nightglow. This book is of value to geophysicists, theoreticians, and scientists of the allied fields of geophysics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to describe and discuss the aurora as an optical phenomenon, one which can be observed by the naked eye as well as with more sensitive optical detectors. It continues the tradition of study ing that impressive and imaginative play of nature, the northern lights, seen and discussed by the Greek philosphers as early as the sixth century B.c. Today the study of the optical aurora is only one of many ways of acquiring information about a major phenomenon: the ejection of plasma from the sun, the interaction of this plasma with the geomagnetic field and the injection of fast particles into the earth's atmosphere. of the optical aurora is justified by the Hence, the separate treatment particular scientific approach: detection and interpretation of electro magnetic radiation, approximately in the 1000-100000 A region, produc ed through interaction between the auroral particles and the earth's atmosphere. Other techniques, such as radio observations, X-ray observations, direct particle detections from rockets and satellites, studies of magnetic storms, and measurements of the magnetic field and plasma properties in the magnetosphere, are as important or more important than the classical way of studying the optical aurora. Nevertheless, it was felt worthwhile to treat the optical aurora in a separate book, perhaps mainly because today one author cannot master the whole subject with sufficient competence. This book is thus one volume in a series of books giving a more complete picture of physics and chemistry in space.

Download or read book Auroral Plasma Physics written by Götz Paschmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-03-31 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gives a broad synthesis of the current knowledge and understanding of the plasma physics behind the aurora. The aurora is not only one of the most spectacular natural phenomena on Earth, but the underlying physical processes are expected to be ubiquitous in the plasma universe. Recognizing the enormous progress made over the last decade) through in situ and groundbased measurements as well as theoretical modelling, it seemed timely to write the first comprehensive and integrated book on the subject. Recent advances concern the clarification of the nature of the acceleration process of the electrons that are responsible for the visible aurora, the recognition of the fundamental role of the large-scale current systems in organizing the auroral morphology, and of the interplay between particles and electromagnetic fields.

  • Author : Dale P. Cruikshank
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 1995-11

Download or read book Neptune and Triton written by Dale P. Cruikshank and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1995-11 with total page 1292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first reconnaissance of all the major planets of the Solar System culminated in the Voyager 2 encounter with Neptune in August 1989. Neptune itself was revealed as a planet with gigantic active storms in its atmosphere, and off-center magnetic field, and a system of tenuous, lumpy rings. Whereas only two satellites were known prior to the encounter, Voyager discovered six more. Triton, the largest satellite, was revealed as a frozen, icy world with clouds and layers of haze, and with vertical plumes of particles reaching five miles into the thin atmosphere. This latest Space Science Series volume presents the current level of understanding of Neptune, its riings, and its satellites, derived from the data received from the Voyager. The book's chapters are written by the world's leading authorities on various aspects of the Neptune system and are based on papers presented at an international conference held in January 1992. Covering details of Neptune's interior, atmosphere, rings, magnetic fields, and near-space environment--as well as the small satellites and the remarkable moon Triton--this volume is a unique resource for planetary scientists and astronomers requiring a comprehensive analysis of Neptune viewed in the context of our knowledge of the other giant planets. Until another spacecraft is sent to Neptune, Neptune and Triton will stand as the basic reference on the planet.

Book An Algorithm for Determining the Boundary of Auroral Precipitation Using Data from the SSJ 3 Sensor

Download or read book An Algorithm for Determining the Boundary of Auroral Precipitation Using Data from the SSJ 3 Sensor written by David A. Hardy and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In support of the Global Weather Central of the Air Weather Service, we have developed computer techniques to determine, in near real time, the equatorward boundary of the auroral oval using the data from the SSJ/3 sensors flown on board the DMSP satellites. The boundary is determined on both the morning and evening sides of the oval and in both northern and southern auroral zones. Three tests are used in the boundary determination, one on the evening side and two on the morning side of the auroral oval. On the evening side of the auroral zone, since low energy particles always are observed at the lowest latitude, the boundary is determined by testing the summed counts in the six channels of the SSJ/3 detector covering the energy range from 110 eV to 1000 eV. The boundary is chosen when the summed counts exceed 30 for 3 successive seconds. The data are always tested as a function of increasing magnetic latitude. On the morning side, high energy electrons are always observed first. Since the channels measuring high energy electrons may be contaminated by penetrating particles from the ring belts, two tests are required. The first test picks the boundary at the point where three successive ratios of 4-sec averages of channel 8 to channel 9 are less than 5. The second test chooses the boundary where the ratio of the summed counts in channels 1 through 4 of the SSJ/3 sensor to channels 5 through 8 exceeds 1.5 or is less than 0.5 for 3 successive seconds.

Download or read book Space Research written by M. J. Rycroft and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COSPAR Space Research, Volume 20 covers the proceedings of the open meetings of the Working Groups on Physical Sciences of the 22nd Plenary Meeting of COSPAR in Bangalore, India on May 29-June 9, 1979. This volume is organized into four parts encompassing 50 chapters that review significant advances in space research concerning the Earth's atmosphere and plasma envelope, as well as in the planetary science and astronomy fields. Part I describes the unique properties of the different layers of the Earth's neutral atmosphere, including the tropical troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere. This part also deals with the measurements of atmospheric radiation, the application of remote sensing by satellites to radiation climatology, the structure and circulation of the stratosphere and mesosphere, and the theory and application of thermospheric models. Part II highlights the research studies concerning the chemistry and energetic charged particle effect in the ionosphere. This part also examines the in situ measurements of equatorial ionosphere and the distribution of singly ionized helium through backscatter observations. Part III contains surveys associated with some planetary components, such as the comets, moon, and Venus. This part specifically discusses the data obtained from different probes, models, and analytical techniques to study these components. Part IV explores research works on the sun, cosmic ray, and infrared and gamma-ray astronomy. This book is intended primarily to astronomers and space scientists and researchers.
