Book excerpt: During magnetically disturbed periods, the spatially and temporally structured electron precipitation in the auroral zone creates a significant population of thermal secondary ions. Acceleration mechanisms exist that are capable of energizing the thermal population to suprathermal energies (1 eV to 1 keV). Suprathermal ions escape into the magnetosphere and undergo "bounce" motion along magnetic field lines. These ions are bound to the magnetic flux tubes, which undergo ExB convective drift within the magnetosphere. Magnetospheric convection transports flux tubes of bouncing suprathermal ions through the auroral zone and the subauroral polarization stream (SAPS) regions. Precipitating suprathermal ions enhance ionospheric plasma density structure and constitute a possible source for the enhanced echo occurrence observed by ground-based radars in the SAPS region. Satellite energy spectrometer data often show multiple bands of suprathermal particles with enhanced number and energy flux, and with an energy increase with increasing latitude. The present work examines the hypothesis that these signatures are the result of thermal secondary ions that have been accelerated out of the auroral ionosphere over the short time scales characterizing bursts of intense auroral electron precipitation. The analysis of three events of energy-dispersed ion signatures was facilitated by three-dimensional ion tracing software developed for this thesis. The short-lived acceleration hypothesis can account for the energy-dispersed ion signatures if there exist inter-hemispheric field aligned potentials of the order of 100 V. If the source of the ions is within the auroral zone, the suprathermal ions observed in the SAPS region are most likely to be O+ ions. The long bounce period of O+ (compared to H+) allows convection to transport O+ auroral ions equatorward through a convection reversal, into the SAPS region during a single half-bounce.

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades auroral science has developed from a somewhat mysterious and imprecise specialty into a discipline central in the study of the ionosphere and magnetosphere. The investigation of aurora unites scientists with very different backgrounds and interests so that it is difficult to write a self-contained account of the field in a book of reasonable length. In this work I have attempted to include those aspects of theory which I have found valuable in predicting the effects on the atmosphere of auroral particle precipitation. In addition I have attempted to describe the techniques of observation with particular emphasis on optical methods which have been useful. While the aeronomy of aurora has been regarded as central, the mechanisms by which particles are accelerated and precipitated into the atmosphere is of no less interest. This aspect of the subject has however been treated in a briefer fashion since it is a part of the immense and rapidly developing field of magnetospheric science. Generally I have attempted to provide a coherent introduction to auroral science with an emphasis on relatively simple physical interpretations and models. References are given to enable the reader to find more extensive or rigorous discussions of particular topics. A fairly complete, quantitative atlas of the auroral spectrum is included.

The evolution of the spherical electron intensity in phase space is studied for a variety of incident electron intensities. It is shown that the secondary electrons with energies 10eV and at altitudes 150 km can take over 300 ms to reach steady state in phase space. Since there are bright optical emissions in this region, such a time dependence in the auroral electrons is important. The emissions of N2(2PG) 3371 Å and N2+(1NG) 4278 Å are studied for time-varying electron pulses to show for the first time that this ratio will change until the secondary electrons reach steady state in the ionosphere. The way in which the 3371Å/4278Å ratio changes with time-varying precipitation depends on the precipitating electron spectra. The changes in the emission ratio can be used to learn more about the auroral acceleration region and the role of the ionosphere in auroral emissions. Field-aligned bursts (FABs), often observed in electron spectra of instruments flying over flickering aurora, are modeled with the time-dependent transport model. How the ionosphere modifies these electrons is shown. The 3371 and 4278 Å emissions of flickering FABs are modeled to study the optical effects of modulated electron intensities in time. A study of 4278 Å emissions for electron source regions from 630 to 4,000 km are studied along with frequency variations from 5 to 100 Hz. This study shows that the percent variation of the maximum to the minimum column brightness is less for higher frequencies and more distant source regions. It is shown that with an accurate time-dependent transport calculation and 4278 Å emission observations of flickering aurora it should be possible to deduce the source altitude of the modulated electrons creating the optical flickering"--Leaf iii.

Some 40 leading experts from America, USSR, and Western Europe attended the Symposium. The purpose of the meeting was to review and discuss the physics of the hot plasma in the magnetosphere with special empha sis on unsolved problems on which attention needs to be focused during the International Magnetospheric Study 1976-1978. The field is very extensive and complete coverage of all aspects was of course not possible. The radiation belts proper were, for instance, not covered. There were no formal contributed papers, but much time was devoted to discussion. These proceedings contain all review papers except the one by R.Z. Sagdeev. They are ordered by subject, starting, after the introductory lecture, with the problem of how the plasma enters the magnetosphere and ending with the question of the interaction with the ionosphere. The Organizing Committee for the symposium was composed of the following Swedish scientists: E.-A. Brunberg, C.G. Fa1thammar, I. Hu1then, B. Hu1tqvist (chairman), L. Stenf10, and H. Wilhe1msson. The Symposium was financed by the Nobel Foundation through grants from the Tercentenary Foundation of the Bank of Sweden, by the Swedish Board for Space Activities, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which is gratefully acknowledged. Appreciated contributions "in natura" were also received from the town of Kiruna and the LKAB Company.
