Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aurora Borealis Academica: Aberdeen University Appreciations, 1860-1889 The editor gratefully acknowledges the readiness with which his requests for contri butions were responded to. He disclaims all responsibility for the opinions expressed by his twenty-seven contributors, whose points of view will be found as varied as the merits of their styles. His thanks are especially given to Mr. W. Keith Leask, to whom are due not merely three of the sketches, but many valu able suggestions made both while the book was being planned and while it was being printed; and to Mr. W. F. Webster, who specially photographed several of the subjects of illustration. A melancholy reminder of the fleeting character of all academic annals is afforded by the death, as the sheets were passing through the press, of two of the subjects of ap preciation: Emeritus Professor John Forbes in his ninety-seventh year, and Emeritus Professor Sir John Struthers in his seventy: seventh year. Book King s College Chapel Aberdeen 1500 2000

Download or read book King s College Chapel Aberdeen 1500 2000 written by Jane Geddes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition is a revised and expanded version of the book produced in 2000 to celebrate the quincentenary of King's College Chapel, Aberdeen. Since then, exciting discoveries have taken place and old ideas have been reappraised. The choir stalls and woodwork have provided a fresh seam of information about the meaning and use of the medieval chapel. Daniel MacCannell has identified new iconography in the stalls. Jane Geddes, prompted by the installation of the new organ, has investigated the original function and appearance of the great pulpitum or screen between the choir and nave and discovered the location of a magnificent lost organ loft. Mary Pryor and John Morrison have examined the great baroque biblical paintings and come up with a totally new interpretation of their iconography and function: a political warning to King Charles II. Easter Smart, the university chaplain, describes the flexible and ecumenical use of the chapel today. The revised edition appears in time to honour the quincentenary of the death of Bishop William Elphinstone, the founder of Aberdeen University, who died in 1514. This book aims to integrate his legacy to the chapel: the liturgy, music, architecture and fittings. Thanks to an unusually tolerant and conservative attitude towards religion at the university following the Reformation, the chapel has survived in a more complete medieval state than any other church in Scotland. The rich archive of university documents show how benign neglect and a fierce pride in their iconic building caused the university to maintain the structure and its furnishings even during the long centuries when it ceased to serve a religious function.

Book excerpt: Anatomy museums around the world showcase preserved corpses in service of education and medical advancement, but they are little-known and have been largely hidden from the public eye. Elizabeth Hallam here investigates the anatomy museum and how it reveals the fascination and fears that surround the dead body in Western societies. Hallam explores the history of these museums and how they operate in the current cultural environment. Their regulated access increasingly clashes with evolving public mores toward the exposed body, as demonstrated by the international popularity of the Body Worlds exhibition. The book examines such related topics as artistic works that employ the images of dead bodies and the larger ongoing debate over the disposal of corpses. Issues such as aesthetics and science, organ and body donations, and the dead body in Western religion and ritual are also discussed here in fascinating depth. The Anatomy Museum unearths a strange and compelling cultural history that investigates the ideas of preservation, human rituals of death, and the spaces that our bodies occupy in this life and beyond.

Book The Northern Lights

Download or read book The Northern Lights written by Lucy Jago and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, biography, and arctic exploration coverage in this extraordinary true story of the life and work of Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland, the troubled genius who solved the mysteries of one of nature’s most spectacular displays. Captivated by the otherworldly lights of the aurora borealis, Birkeland embarked on a lifelong quest to discover their cause. His pursuit took him to some of the most forbidding landscapes on earth, from the remote snowcapped mountains of Norway to the war-torn deserts of Africa. In the face of rebuke by the scientific establishment, sabotage by a jealous rival, and his own battles with depression and paranoia, Birkeland remained steadfast. Although ultimately vindicated, his theories were unheralded—and his hopes for the Nobel Prize scuttled—at the time of his suspicious death in 1917. The Northern Lights offers a brilliant account of the physics behind the aurora borealis and a rare look inside the mind of one of history's most visionary scientists.
