Download or read book The Genus Citrus written by Manuel Talon and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genus Citrus presents the enormous amount of new knowledge that has been generated in recent years on nearly all topics related to citrus. Beginning with an overview of the fundamental principles and understanding of citrus biology and behavior, the book provides a comprehensive view from Citrus evolution to current market importance. Reporting on new insights supported by the elucidation of the citrus genome sequence, it presents groundbreaking theories and fills in previous knowledge gaps. Because citrus is among the most difficult plants to improve through traditional breeding, citrus researchers, institutions and industries must quickly learn to adapt to new developments, knowledge and technologies to address the biological constraints of a unique fruit-tree such as citrus. Despite the challenges of working with citrus, tremendous progress has been made, mostly through advances in molecular biology and genomics. This book is valuable for all those involved with researching and advancing, producing, processing, and delivering citrus products. - Includes the most current research on citrus genomic information - Provides the first detailed description of citrus origin, a new proposal for citrus taxonomy, and a redefinition of the genus Citrus - Details citrus challenges including climate change, global disease impacts, and plant improvement strategies
Download or read book Flavonoids in the Living System written by John Manthey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of contaminant flavonoids in vitamin C preparations from citrus fruits initially led Szent-Gyorgyi and his collaborators to suggest that a flavonoid compound, with biological activity for the prevention of capillary fragility, was vitamin P. Later re search, although not disproving biological activity, discontinued the use of the vitamin classification for these compounds. However, the ubiquitous distribution of flavonoids in living organisms, and the continued discovery of various activity in biological systems makes these compounds targets of wide ranging investigation. This volume is primarily based on a Symposium on Flavonoids and related com pounds held during the 212th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society held in Orlando, Florida on August 28-29, 1996 under the sponsorship of the Division of Agricul tural and Food Chemistry. While the book is not intended to be a comprehensive volume on flavonoid research, the papers provide various approaches to exploring the biological functions of flavonoids in plants and animals, their chemical modifications for enhanced activity, some analytical techniques, as well as their use in food classification. A signifi cant portion is devoted to medicinal implications of these compounds. The organizers would like to express their appreciation to Tropicana Products, Inc., Bradenton, Florida, Coca-Cola Foods Division, Plymouth, Florida and the American Chemical Society's Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry for financial support. Of course, the book could not be produced without the authors, whose cooperation and pa tience is greatly appreciated.
Download or read book The Biology of Citrus written by Pinhas Spiegel-Roy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Citrus provides a concise and comprehensive discussion of all major developmental, genetic and horticultural aspects of citriculture in an easily readable text. The book deals with the history, distribution and climatic adaptation of the crop, followed by taxonomy and systematics, including a horticultural classification of edible citrus species. Subsequent chapters cover tree structure and function, reproductive physiology, including flowering, fruiting, productivity, ripening, post-harvest and fruit constituents. The main aspects of cultivated citrus, such as rootstocks, irrigation, pests, viruses and diseases are dealt with, leading to a concluding chapter that considers genetic improvement, including the use of tissue culture and plant biotechnology. The book includes many specially produced original illustrations and the extensive reading lists will make it invaluable for students and citrus specialists.
Download or read book Pollen Cryopreservation Protocols written by P.E. Rajasekharan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-20 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses upon pollen cryopreservation in various crops from the most widely cultivated tomato to the lesser known medicinal species like Decalepis arayalpatra. Chapters detail standard techniques such as pollen collection, cryopreservation, pollen , germination tests for viability, and specific crops. Step-by-step protocols are complemented by personal notes, precautions, and specifying the reagents to be used in each step to ensure the repeatability of the procedure across labs. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Pollen Cryopreservation Protocols aims to serve as reference for researchers studying plant breeding and plant conservation biology.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several decades botanists have been impressed by the discovery that the distribution of secondary plant substances follows the general lines of plant relationships. However, it soon became clear that little was to be gained from the study of individual compounds and their natural distribu tion. Therefore, more comprehensive studies were attempt ed in which the secondary chemistry of a major plant group was carefully studied and evaluated in the broader context of comparative phytochemistry. Holger Erdtman's admir able work on Coniferae is the foremost example of this kind. Since then, there has been an upswing in the study of the biosynthesis of secondary plant substances and it has become quite customary to make use of biosynthetic knowledge in interpreting chemosystematic evidence. More over, since taxonomists have insisted that use be made of all potentially available evidence for building classifications, it has been claimed that chemosystematics too should con sider the whole array of constituents present in a major taxon. However, in practice it has proved difficult to utilize fully the potential of natural product chemistry and biosynthetic studies for plant systematics and evolution, because bota nists found themselves rather disorientated by the scattered, often hardly accessible chemical literature and the fact that the chemical evidence was difficult for them to evaluate! Although the pioneering work of E. C.

Download or read book Genetic Diversity in Plants written by Mahmut Caliskan and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic diversity is of fundamental importance in the continuity of a species as it provides the necessary adaptation to the prevailing biotic and abiotic environmental conditions, and enables change in the genetic composition to cope with changes in the environment. Genetic Diversity in Plants presents chapters revealing the magnitude of genetic variation existing in plant populations. The increasing availability of PCR-based molecular markers allows the detailed analyses and evaluation of genetic diversity in plants and also, the detection of genes influencing economically important traits. The purpose of the book is to provide a glimpse into the dynamic process of genetic variation by presenting the thoughts of scientists who are engaged in the generation of new ideas and techniques employed for the assessment of genetic diversity, often from very different perspectives. The book should prove useful to students, researchers, and experts in the area of conservation biology, genetic diversity, and molecular biology.
