Book Jane

  • Author : Maggie Nelson
  • Publisher : Catapult
  • Release : 2016-09-13
  • ISBN : 1593766580
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Jane written by Maggie Nelson and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part elegy, part true crime story, this memoir-in-verse from the author of the award-winning The Argonauts expands the notion of how we tell stories and what form those stories take through the story of a murdered woman and the mystery surrounding her last hours. Jane tells the spectral story of the life and death of Maggie Nelson’s aunt Jane, who was murdered in 1969 while a first-year law student at the University of Michigan. Though officially unsolved, Jane’s murder was apparently the third in a series of seven brutal rape-murders in the area between 1967 and 1969. Nelson was born a few years after Jane’s death, and the narrative is suffused with the long shadow her murder cast over both the family and her psyche. Exploring the nature of this haunting incident via a collage of poetry, prose, dream-accounts, and documentary sources, including local and national newspapers, related “true crime” books such as The Michigan Murders and Killer Among Us, and fragments from Jane’s own diaries written when she was 13 and 21, its eight sections cover Jane’s childhood and early adulthood, her murder and its investigation, the direct and diffuse effect of her death on Nelson’s girlhood and sisterhood, and a trip to Michigan Nelson took with her mother (Jane’s sister) to retrace the path of Jane’s final hours. Each piece in Jane has its own form, and the movement from each piece to the next--along with the white space that surrounds each fragment--serve as important fissures, disrupting the tabloid, “page-turner” quality of the story, and eventually returning the reader to deeper questions about girlhood, empathy, identification, and the essentially unknowable aspects of another’s life and death. Equal parts a meditation on violence (serial, sexual violence in particular), and a conversation between the living and the dead, Jane’s powerful and disturbing subject matter, combined with its innovations in genre, shows its readers what poetry is capable of--what kind of stories it can tell, and how it can tell them.

Book Jane s Window

Download or read book Jane s Window written by Jane Dunn Sibley and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the southern portion of what was known as the Sibley’s Pezuna del Caballo (Horse’s Hoof) Ranch in West Texas’ Culberson County are two mountains that nearly meet, forming a gap that frames a salt flat where Indians and later, pioneers came to gather salt to preserve foodstuffs. According to the US Geological Survey, the gap that provides this breathtaking and historic view is named “Jane’s Window.” In Jane’s Window: My Spirited Life in West Texas and Austin, Jane Dunn Sibley, the inimitable namesake of that mountain gap, gives readers a similarly enchanting view: she tells the story of a small-town West Texas girl coming into her own in Texas’ capital city, where her commitment to philanthropy and the arts and her flair for fashion—epitomized by her signature buzzard feather—have made her name a society staple. Growing up during the Depression in Fort Stockton, Jane Sibley learned first-hand the value of hard work and determination. In what she describes as “a more innocent age,” she experienced the “pleasant life” of a rural community with good schools, friends and neighbors, and daily dips in the Comanche Springs swimming pool. She arrived as a student at the University of Texas only ninety days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and studied art under such luminaries as sculptor Charles Umlauf. Her enchanting stories of returning to Fort Stockton, working in the oil industry, marrying local doctor D. J. Sibley, and rearing a family evoke both her love for her origins and her clear-eyed aspirations. The Sibleys never discussed the details of their good fortune, and, to their gratitude, no one ever asked. In Jane’s Window, Sibley narrates travel adventures, shares vignettes of famous visitors, and tells of her favorite causes, among which the Austin Symphony and the preservation of lower Pecos prehistoric rock art are especially prominent. Peopled with vivid characters and told in Sibley’s uniquely down-to-earth and humorous manner, Jane’s Window paints a portrait of a life filled to the brim with events both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

Book Jane Austen s Charlotte

Download or read book Jane Austen s Charlotte written by Julia Barrett and published by M. Evans. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly before she died, Jane Austen started working on a new novel. Never finished, it was bequeathed to her favourite niece and remained unknown until 1871, when her nephew referred to it in his Memoir of Jane Austen. While her nephew did not consider it worthy of publishing, novelist and critic E M Forester firmly disagreed, stating that the work would undoubtedly "throw light on the last phase of the great novelist" if published. There have been a few attempts to complete this work, but non have captured the true magic of an Austen novel until now. Originally named The Brothers by Austen and dubbed Sanditon by her family, this 'new' novel promises to bring to life another Austen heroine worthy of keeping company with the likes of Elizabeth, Emma, and Anne. Her name is Charlotte.

Book Aunt Rita and the Women s Reform League

Download or read book Aunt Rita and the Women s Reform League written by Ed Lee and published by . This book was released on 2015-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touching on the "how-tos" and drives behind erotic corporal punishment, in this second graphic novel of the Nu-West/Leda Aunt Rita trilogy, Rita becomes involved with a group of women who donate to and help "reform" the inmates of a local minimum security prison. About the Authors When it comes to the portrayal of erotic spanking, Ed Lee was the original trailblazer through his company Nu-West/Leda. Nu-West is the oldest and largest producer of spanking and corporal punishment related videos in the world. The company began in 1978 by selling photo sets and 8MM movies. Four years later they produced their first video, and now have over a thousand titles. No matter what your taste in discipline that involves a female, whether it is female submissive, female dominant, spanking, caning, strapping or whipping, you will find something that interests you in their huge collection of videos. Checkout their large selection of free video previews at: www.nu-westleda.com The Poser Artist is a relatively new author, who creates fantasy artwork and stories featuring traditional (M/F, F/M, F/F) corporal punishment carried out in authoritarian settings (prison, school, domestic) - where the characters act thinly oblivious to the inherent sexuality of administering discipline to a well shaped, submissively posed backside. For plausibility, the stories are set in time periods or places where such practices were (or are) a very much justified, accepted, and even encouraged norm - creating a "romance novel" effect with artwork that's neither too heavy (into the BDSM scene) nor too light (at the unicorns and roses end of the scale).
