  • Author : Michael Whiting

Download or read book Augustus Short written by Michael Whiting and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustus Short arrived in Adelaide in late 1847 as the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide; he was forty-five years old, married to Millicent, and they had five children. He was to remain in office for thirty-four years and departed for retirement to England in his eightieth year, much lauded as a distinguished colonist. This volume (a companion to Augustus Short and the Founding of the University of Adelaide, published in 2014) explores Short’s life before arriving in South Australia — his education at Westminster School and at Christ Church, Oxford. An outstanding scholar, Short was ordained a priest of the Church of England in 1827, and taught at Christ Church before serving eleven years in a rural parish in Northamptonshire. Many of the courageous and innovative ideas Short practised as Bishop of Adelaide had their origins in his education, and were influenced by those he studied with — Bishop Thomas Vowler Short, Bishop Charles Lloyd, Edward Bouverie Pusey and John Henry Newman, among others. Short’s first forty-five years were dominated by Christ Church, and this is equally a story of that enduring community of learning and worship as it shaped Short’s beliefs and choices in life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Augustus Short, First Bishop of Adelaide: The Story of a Thirty-Four Years' Episcopate The only apology which can be offered for the authorship of this book is that the writer hopes a born South Australian, educated in the colony, and ordained by the first bishop of Adelaide, may not be thought altogether unsuitable to tell the tale of the good old bishop's life. Download or read book Flourishing in Faith written by Gillies Ambler and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flourishing in Faith: Theology Encountering Positive Psychology explores the fascinating dialogue between two scholarly traditions concerned with personal wellbeing, Christian theology and Positive Psychology, primarily from the perspective of theology. Although each works within different paradigms and brings different fundamental assumptions about the nature of the world, both are oriented toward that which leads to human flourishing and contentment. In such an encounter, can both disciplines learn from one another? Do they challenge each other? How can they enrich and or critique each other? With the widespread emergence of Positive Psychology in educational, church, and community settings across the world, many of which self-identify with the Christian tradition, many are wondering how this new branch of psychology integrates with traditional Christian belief and practice. This groundbreaking book explores this question from a diversity of perspectives: theology, biblical studies, education, psychology, social work, disability studies, and chaplaincy, from scholars and practitioners working in Australia and the United States.

Book Radar Men A P Rowe and John Strath in War and Peace

Download or read book Radar Men A P Rowe and John Strath in War and Peace written by Don Sinnott and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II defined its heroes and villains. There are many books on national leaders like Churchill and Hitler, generals like Montgomery and Rommel. Less has been written about the civilian scientists, engineers, and technicians whose work produced military innovations that drove the direction and outcome of that terrible conflict. This book is a connected and interlaced narrative of two men who were World War II civilian scientists. It is a non-technical portrait of two twentieth-century life stories against a backdrop of war and peace, which are important in both historical context and as illustrations of the human condition lived in extraordinary circumstances. The lives of A. P. Rowe and John Strath intersected in the British development of radar in the 1930s and 1940s and then diverged into critical roles in Britain and Australia after the war. Rowe and Strath worked in Britains epic development of radar defences, without which the 1940 aerial Battle of Britain would have been lost. Rowe led what has been termed as one of the most successful research establishments of all time, focussed on the development and deployment of radar; Strath was a junior member of that establishment. After the war, both men moved to Australia where Rowe, after a short and unhappy involvement as lead scientific adviser on the development of Australia's Woomera rocket range and Australian defence, was for a decade a highly contentious vice chancellor of the University of Adelaide. Strath became involved in development of the British atomic weapon and monitoring of nuclear test effects in Australia and then became the prime mover for development of what is now Australias Jindalee Operational Radar Network, a major component of the countrys long-range defence surveillance.

Book The Messages of Its Walls and Fields

Download or read book The Messages of Its Walls and Fields written by Katharine Thornton and published by Wakefield Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Messages of its Walls and Fields seeks to understand the culture of each decade of the School's development. The focus is on the boys themselves, but Katharine Thornton also evaluates the policies of succeeding Councils of Governors and the achievements of the thirteen Headmasters who have led Saints from 1847 to 2009. The curriculum story is here, the context for advocating sport, the emergence of the external activities of the co-curriculum, the values of a Saints' education, the background to each building project, the economy of the School, drama and the arts, science and new laboratories, the ambience of stone, trees and green lawn at the heart of a Saints' experience. St Peter's College graduates have made signifi cant contributions to the life of South Australia, in the professions, in social values, in politics, in sport and in the arts. The history of South Australia must include a knowledge of this School. Here it is in twenty chapters and hundreds of illustrations, not just an entertainment for a week but a reliable record for a lifetime.
