Book Analyzing Doctrine

    Book Details:
  • Author : Oliver Crisp
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 9781481309882
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Analyzing Doctrine written by Oliver Crisp and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Analyzing Doctrine Oliver Crisp carefully considers the relationship of systematic theology to analytic philosophy, arguing that the tools of analytic philosophy can be fruitfully applied to traditional systematic theology. Doing so, as Analyzing Doctrine reveals, creates a distinct and rich analytic theology. Analyzing Doctrine employs traditional themes of systematic theology to structure Crisp's analytic theological analysis. Crisp examines the doctrine of God, the mystery of the Trinity, and God's intention in creating and relating to the world. He then addresses the incarnation, original sin, the virgin birth, Christ's two wills, salvation, and, finally, the resurrection. In the process of making his constructive case, Crisp engages a range of historic theological voices from the tradition, as well as contemporary biblical studies and systematic theology. Clear, accessible, and engaging, Analyzing Doctrine establishes analytic theology's place in the architecture of systematic theology while also challenging some of its misconceptions. By seamlessly weaving together Christian tradition and analytic philosophy to construct his theology, Crisp argues for the integral role that analytic theology plays in the theological imagination.

Book God Is Not Great

  • Author : Christopher Hitchens
  • Publisher : McClelland & Stewart
  • Release : 2008-11-19
  • ISBN : 1551991764
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book God Is Not Great written by Christopher Hitchens and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Hitchens, described in the London Observer as “one of the most prolific, as well as brilliant, journalists of our time” takes on his biggest subject yet–the increasingly dangerous role of religion in the world. In the tradition of Bertrand Russell’s Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris’s recent bestseller, The End Of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope’s awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix.

This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forty years of my presidency and teaching in the Rochester Theological Seminary have been rewarded by the knowledge that more than a hundred of my pupils have become missionaries in heathen lands. For many years these former students have been urging me to visit them. Until recently seminary sessions and literary work have prevented acceptance of their invitations. When I laid down my official duties, two alternatives presented themselves: I could sit down and read through the new Encyclopædia Britannica, or I could go round the world. A friend suggested that I might combine these schemes. The publishers provide a felt-lined trunk to hold the encyclopædia: I could read it, and circumnavigate the globe at the same time. This proposition, however, had an air of cumbrousness. I concluded to take my wife as my encyclopædia instead of the books, and this seemed the more rational since she had, seven or eight years before, made the same tour of the missions which I had in mind. To her therefore a large part of the information in the following pages is due, for in all my journey she was my guide, philosopher, and friend.

Book The House of Augustus

    Book Details:
  • Author : T.P. Wiseman
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2019-07-23
  • ISBN : 0691180075
  • Pages : 263 pages

Download or read book The House of Augustus written by T.P. Wiseman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radical reexamination of the textual and archaeological evidence about Augustus and the Palatine Caesar Augustus (63 BC–AD 14), who is usually thought of as the first Roman emperor, lived on the Palatine Hill, the place from which the word “palace” originates. A startling reassessment of textual and archaeological evidence, The House of Augustus demonstrates that Augustus was never an emperor in any meaningful sense of the word, that he never had a palace, and that the so-called "Casa di Augusto" excavated on the Palatine was a lavish aristocratic house destroyed by the young Caesar in order to build the temple of Apollo. Exploring the Palatine from its first occupation to the present, T. P. Wiseman proposes a reexamination of the "Augustan Age," including much of its literature. Wiseman shows how the political and ideological background of Augustus' rise to power offers a radically different interpretation of the ancient evidence about the Augustan Palatine. Taking a long historical perspective in order to better understand the topography, Wiseman considers the legendary stories of Rome’s origins—in particular Romulus' foundation and inauguration of the city on the summit of the Palatine. He examines the new temple of Apollo and the piazza it overlooked, as well as the portico around it with its library used as a hall for Senate meetings, and he illustrates how Commander Caesar, who became Caesar Augustus, was the champion of the Roman people against an oppressive oligarchy corrupting the Republic. A decisive intervention in a critical debate among ancient historians and archaeologists, The House of Augustus recalibrates our views of a crucially important period and a revered public space.

Book Systematic Theology Volume 1 The Doctrine of God

Download or read book Systematic Theology Volume 1 The Doctrine of God written by Augustus Hopkins Strong and published by Defender. This book was released on 2019-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1800s, the president of Rochester Theological Seminary toiled away ceaselessly to complete a very important project. His intent was to provide his students and colleagues with comprehensive tools to "rightly divide the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15)... But the finished work that materialized from his devoted study would go on to change the scholarly world forever. By 1907, Augustus Hopkins Strong--the same man who compiled the famously celebrated Strong's Concordance (1890), an obvious must-have for any serious student of the Bible--emerged with a new, magnum opus masterpiece: Systematic Theology. As the title reveals, its approach to developing a healthy understanding of foundational Christian doctrine requires placing scattered scriptural references on any one theological subject together in a single parent category, reflecting upon the original author's words in context to surrounding Scripture, and then thoroughly studying what those verses all have to say about a theological topic when combined. This practice of organizing biblical truths into categorical systems makes it impossible to casually and haphazardly take a verse out of context--or to personally approach God with a weak, flimsy expectation of His order, design, and character--which is why researchers, students, scholars, and lay believers all over the world have relied heavily upon Strong's work since the day it went to print. Strong's Systematic Theology is so exhaustive and thorough that, from the beginning, it required being subdivided into three major volumes: The Doctrine of God, The Doctrine of Man, and The Doctrine of Salvation. Defender Publishing is proud to republish this extraordinary 3-Volume masterpiece as a resource and study tool for scholars and all students of the Bible, that their lives and faith "may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Tim. 3:17).

Book Houses of the Interpreter

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Lyle Jeffrey
  • Publisher : Baylor University Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0918954894
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Houses of the Interpreter written by David Lyle Jeffrey and published by Baylor University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Houses of the Interpreter, David Lyle Jeffrey explores the terrain of the cultural history of biblical interpretation. But Jeffrey does not merely rest content to chart biblical scholarship and how it has both influenced and been influenced by culture. Instead, he chooses to focus upon the "art" of Biblical interpretation --how sculptors, musicians, poets, novelists, and painters have "read" the Bible. By so doing, Jeffrey clearly demonstrates that such cultural interpretation has deepened the church's understanding of the Bible as Scripture and that, remarkably, this cultural reading has contributed to theology and the practice of faith. Jeffrey's chapters effectively root the theological issues central to any hermeneutical enterprise (e.g., Scriptural authority, narrative, the Old Testament as Christian Scripture, the role of the reader, gender, and postmodernism) in specific authors and artists (e.g., Chaucer, Bosch, Sir Orfeo, C. S. Lewis) --and he does this in constant conversation with literature, both eastern and western.
