Book The Legacy of Sovereign Joy

Download or read book The Legacy of Sovereign Joy written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We admire these men for their greatness, but the truth is Augustine grappled with sexual passions. Martin Luther struggled to control his tongue. John Calvin fought the battle of faith with worldly weapons. Yet each man will always be remembered for the messages he declared-messages that still resound today. John Piper explores each of these men's lives, integrating Augustine's delight in God with Luther's emphasis on the Word and Calvin's exposition of Scripture. Through their strengths and struggles we can learn how to live better today. When we consider their lives, we behold the glory and majesty of God and find power to overcome our weaknesses. If ever you are complacent about sin, if ever you lose the joy of Jesus Christ, if ever you are dulled by the world's influence, let the lives of these men help you recapture the wonder of God. Part of the The Swans Are Not Silent series.

Book The Longing of the Heart

Download or read book The Longing of the Heart written by Tarsicius J. van Bavel and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine often falls outside the scope of people that look for prayers among famous spiritual masters. Presumably this is caused by the absence of a monograph on prayer by his hand. However, anyone who knows his writings, also knows that the force of this inspiring man was based on prayer. Who else than the celebrated authority on Augustine, T.J. van Bavel (1923-2007), can introduce us to this dimension of Augustine. In this book he shows how this passionate North African combined the inner self, prayer, intellectual effort and pastoral dedication to a harmonious whole. His Confessions, confessions of sin and gratitude, are monumental and belong to our religious heritage. His Sermons about the Psalms formed the right moments to incite his faithful to a life of prayer. One will hardly find in his other writings and sermons texts that do not mention the theme of prayer. Much of his ideas have influenced greatly religious leaders of later times.

Book Late Have I Loved Thee

    Book Details:
  • Author : Augustine of Hippo
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2006-12-05
  • ISBN : 0375725695
  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book Late Have I Loved Thee written by Augustine of Hippo and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2006-12-05 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first collection of Saint Augustine's varied writings on human and divine love—chosen to reflect his lifelong preoccupation with ordo amoris, the principle of rightly directed love. "My weight is my love," Saint Augustine writes in The Confessions. He sees our ability to love as disordered by sin, so that we often choose badly what and how to love. Only by recognizing that we are commanded to love God first can any other object of our love be properly ordered, Late Have I Loved Thee draws on the riches found in Augustine's sermons, letters, treatises, and Scripture commentaries, as well as passages from The Confessions and City of God. Augustine (354-430 A.D.) was the most prolific writer of Christian antiquity and the most influential theologian in Church history. In his first encyclical, God Is Love, current Pope Benedict XVI acknowledges his indebtedness to him. When we read Augustine today, we encounter the same direct, eloquent passions his original listeners experienced, infused with his deep sense of human weakness and burning desire for union with God.

Book Augustine and Time

  • Author : John Doody
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2021-05-25
  • ISBN : 1793637768
  • Pages : 357 pages

Download or read book Augustine and Time written by John Doody and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines the topic of time in the life and works of Augustine of Hippo. Adopting a global perspective on time as a philosophical and theological problem, the volume includes reflections on the meaning of history, the mortality of human bodies, and the relationship between temporal experience and linguistic expression. As Augustine himself once observed, time is both familiar and surprisingly strange. Everyone’s days are structured by temporal rhythms and routines, from watching the clock to whiling away the hours at work. Few of us, however, take the time to sit down and figure out whether time is real or not, or how it is we are able to hold our past, present, and future thoughts together in a straight line so that we can recite a prayer or sing a song. Divided into five sections, the essays collected here highlight the ongoing relevance of Augustine’s work even in settings quite distinct from his own era and context. The first three sections, organized around the themes of interpretation, language, and gendered embodiment, engage directly with Augustine’s own writings, from the Confessions to the City of God and beyond. The final two sections, meanwhile, explore the afterlife of the Augustinian approach in conversation with medieval Islamic and Christian thinkers (like Avicenna and Aquinas), as well as a broad range of Buddhist figures (like Dharmakīrti and Vasubandhu). What binds all of these diverse chapters together is the underlying sense that, regardless of the century or the tradition in which we find ourselves, there is something about the puzzle of temporality that refuses to go away. Time, as Augustine knew, demands our attention. This was true for him in late ancient North Africa. It was also true for Buddhist thinkers in South and East Asia. And it remains just as true for humankind in the twenty-first century, as people around the globe continue to grapple with the reality of time and the challenges of living in a world that always seems to be to be speeding up rather than slowing down.

Book excerpt: "This narrative of the first half of Augustine's life conjures the intellectual and social milieu of the late Roman Empire with a Proustian relish for detail." -- New York Times In Augustine, celebrated historian Robin Lane Fox follows Augustine of Hippo on his journey to the writing of his Confessions. Unbaptized, Augustine indulged in a life of lust before finally confessing and converting. Lane Fox recounts Augustine's sexual sins, his time in an outlawed heretical sect, and his gradual return to spirituality.
