Download or read book Auger Electron Spectroscopy written by Donald T. Hawkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auger electron spectroscopy is rapidly developing into the single most powerful analytical technique in basic and applied science.for investigating the chemical and structural properties of solids. Its ex plosive growth beginning in 1967 was triggered by the development of Auger analyzers capable of de tecting one atom layer of material in a fraction of a second. Continued growth was guaranteed firstly by the commercial availability of apparatus which combined the capabilities of scanning electron mi croscopy and ion-mill depth profiling with Auger analysis, and secondly by the increasing need to know the atomistics of many processes in fundamental research and engineering applications. The expanding use of Auger analysis was accompanied by an increase in the number of publications dealing with it. Because of the developing nature of Auger spectroscopy, the articles have appeared in many different sources covering diverse disciplines, so that it is extremely difficult to discover just what has or has not been subjected to Auger analysis. In this situation, a comprehensive bibliography is obviou-sly useful to those both inside and outside the field. For those in the field, this bibliography should be a wonderful time saver for locating certain references, in researching a particular topic, or when considering various aspects of instrumentation or data analysis. This bibliography not only provides the most complete listing of references pertinent to surface Auger analysis available today, but it is also a basis for extrapolating from past trends to future expectations.

This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2005, this book covers the closely related techniques of electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) specifically from a geological viewpoint. Topics discussed include: principles of electron-target interactions, electron beam instrumentation, X-ray spectrometry, general principles of SEM image formation, production of X-ray 'maps' showing elemental distributions, procedures for qualitative and quantitative X-ray analysis (both energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive), the use of both 'true' electron microprobes and SEMs fitted with X-ray spectrometers, and practical matters such as sample preparation and treatment of results. Throughout, there is an emphasis on geological aspects not mentioned in similar books aimed at a more general readership. The book avoids unnecessary technical detail in order to be easily accessible, and forms a comprehensive text on EMPA and SEM for geological postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, as well as those working in industrial laboratories.

Book Microanalysis of Solids

    Book Details:
  • Author : B.G. Yacobi
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 1489914927
  • Pages : 459 pages

Download or read book Microanalysis of Solids written by B.G. Yacobi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this book is to systematically describe the basic principles of the most widely used techniques for the analysis of physical, structural, and compositional properties of solids with a spatial resolution of approxi mately 1 ~m or less. Many books and reviews on a wide variety of microanalysis techniques have appeared in recent years, and the purpose of this book is not to replace them. Rather, the motivation for combining the descriptions of various mi croanalysis techniques in one comprehensive volume is the need for a reference source to help identify microanalysis techniques, and their capabilities, for obtaining particular information on solid-state materials. In principle, there are several possible ways to group the various micro analysis techniques. They can be distinguished by the means of excitation, or the emitted species, or whether they are surface or bulk-sensitive techniques, or on the basis of the information obtained. We have chosen to group them according to the means of excitation. Thus, the major parts of the book are: Electron Beam Techniques, Ion Beam Techniques, Photon Beam Techniques, Acoustic Wave Excitation, and Tunneling of Electrons and Scanning Probe Microscopies. We hope that this book will be useful to students (final year undergrad uates and graduates) and researchers, such as physicists, material scientists, electrical engineers, and chemists, working in a wide variety of fields in solid state sciences.

Book The Use of Electron Beam Position Modulation in Auger Depth Profile Analysis

Download or read book The Use of Electron Beam Position Modulation in Auger Depth Profile Analysis written by M. S. Leung and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By combining Auger analysis with ion etching, the scanning Auger microprobe (SAM) provides 'three-dimensional' composition information not readily obtainable from other analytical methods. As this technique is being applied to the analysis of microelectronic devices with increasingly smaller dimensions, two major limitations become evident: (1) features of interest in microelectronic circuits are often comparable in size to the beam diameter of commercial Auger microprobes, and (2) the electron beam tends to drift on the specimen surface because of mechanical instability and differential thermal expansion. Because Auger Depth profiling requires relatively low sputter rates for good depth resolution, depth profiles of small features can be seriously degraded by beam drift. In this report, we describe a technique that will eliminate the error and uncertainty caused by beam instability. In our technique, the analyzing beam is scanned repetitively across the feature to be profiled, and the Auger signal is synchronously detected at the scan frequency. The resultant Auger signal magnitude is shown to be unaffected by beam drift when compared to conventional detection methods. (Author).

Book Oxidation Kinetics and Auger Microprobe Analysis of Some Oxidized Zirconium Alloys

Download or read book Oxidation Kinetics and Auger Microprobe Analysis of Some Oxidized Zirconium Alloys written by RA. Ploc and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxidation kinetics at 300°C in dry oxygen of 0.5 wt% binary alloys of iron, nickel, and chromium in zirconium were determined for several surface preparations. Further, chemical profiles of the oxides as they existed on the matrix and on the precipitates were obtained by sputtering and Auger electron analysis. The appearance of "breakaway" oxidation was controlled by the surface finish of the alloy, a variable that could be used to eliminate the phenomenon for all alloys except the Zr/Ni binary, which required ?-quenching to accomplish the same purpose.

Book Surface Analysis Methods in Materials Science

Download or read book Surface Analysis Methods in Materials Science written by D.J. O'Connor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book stemmed from a remark by Philip Jennings of Murdoch University in a discussion session following a regular meeting of the Australian Surface Science group. He observed that a text on surface analysis and applica tions to materials suitable for final year undergraduate and postgraduate science students was not currently available. Furthermore, the members of the Australian Surface Science group had the research experience and range of coverage of sur face analytical techniques and applications to provide a text for this purpose. A of techniques and applications to be included was agreed at that meeting. The list intended readership of the book has been broadened since the early discussions, particularly to encompass industrial users, but there has been no significant alter ation in content. The editors, in consultation with the contributors, have agreed that the book should be prepared for four major groups of readers: - senior undergraduate students in chemistry, physics, metallurgy, materials science and materials engineering; - postgraduate students undertaking research that involves the use of analytical techniques; - groups of scientists and engineers attending training courses and workshops on the application of surface analytical techniques in materials science; - industrial scientists and engineers in research and development seeking a description of available surface analytical techniques and guidance on the most appropriate techniques for particular applications. The contributors mostly come from Australia, with the notable exception of Ray Browning from Stanford University.
