Book excerpt: Praise for the German edition: "A master listener, a master arguer, a master of ecumenical sensitivity, [Fries] is concerned to hand on an existential and reflected experience of the faith, and to make it comprehensible to other men and women as an answer to their questions about the meaning and direction of life . . . thus Fundamental Theology is not just a textbook, but also a book of faith." --Herder Korrespondenz Fundamental theology--with its traditional divisions of faith, revelation, and Church--studies the basic anthropological, philosophical, biblical, and historical foundations of theology. It is the place where theology's religious, intellectual, and cultural presuppositions are mapped out and where individuals can gain an understanding of what is at stake as Catholic theology moves toward its future. Unfortunately, however, theology is seldom taught today in this carefully structured way. Many students and readers of theology have little access to the philosophy and theology of the modern neoscholastic revival that made possible the achievements of the Second Vatican Council and its current reforms. Addressing this need, renowned theologian Heinrich Fries offers what is both a traditionally structured treatment of the basic issues of fundamental theology as they have been modified by Vatican II, and a study of the major ethical, religious, and cultural issues of the late twentieth century. In discussing the many influences at work in Catholic theology, Fries provides the background needed for understanding a bewildering variety of developments and movements, such as neothomism; transcendental thomism; Church reform under Vatican II and liturgical reform; liberation and political theology, and their sibling movements of feminist, womanist, and mujerista theology; inculturation and Christianity's shift from a Eurocentric to a World Church; ecumenism and interreligious dialogue; the tensions between traditionalists and progressives; and, finally, Catholicism's rapproachment with modernity and the challenges of postmodernism. Fries is uniquely qualified to write a fundamental theology. He personally contributed to the great achievements of the Second Vatican Council and since that time has played a leading role in the contemporary development of the theology of revelation and ecumenism. Fundamental Theology was originally published in German in 1985. Now available for the first time in English, it will be an important reference for all theological students and an interesting historical study on Catholic theology for general readers. Born in Germany in 1911, Heinrich Fries was professor at Tubingen and Munich. He resides in Germany and continues to work as a writer and speaker.

Book Broken Lives

Download or read book Broken Lives written by Konrad H. Jarausch and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gripping stories of ordinary Germans who lived through World War II, the Holocaust, and Cold War partition—but also recovery, reunification, and rehabilitation Broken Lives is a gripping account of ordinary Germans who came of age under Hitler and whose lives were scarred and sometimes destroyed by what they saw and did. Drawing on six dozen memoirs by Germans born in the 1920s, Konrad Jarausch chronicles the unforgettable stories of people who not only lived through the Third Reich, World War II, the Holocaust, and Cold War partition, but also participated in Germany's astonishing postwar recovery, reunification, and rehabilitation. Bringing together the voices of men and women, perpetrators and victims, Broken Lives offers new insights about persistent questions. Why did so many Germans support Hitler through years of wartime sacrifice and Nazi inhumanity? How did they finally distance themselves from the Nazi past and come to embrace human rights? The result is a powerful portrait of the experiences of average Germans who journeyed into, through, and out of the abyss of a dark century.

Download or read book What is Life written by Josef Seifert and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes four bold claims: 1) life is an ultimate datum, open to philosophical analysis and irreducible to physical reality; hence all materialist-reductionist explanations - most current theories - of life are false. 2) All life presupposes soul (entelechy) without which a being would at best fake life. 3) The concept of life is analogous and the most direct access to life in its irreducibility is gained through consciousness; 4) All life possesses an objective and intrinsic value that needs to be respected, human life possesses beyond this an inviolable dignity. Life and personal life are pure perfections, it being absolutely better to possess (personal) life than not to possess it. Chapter 1: the metaphysical essence and the many meanings of 'life,' as well as its 'transcendental' character. Chapter 2: the irreducibility of biological life, its amazing empirical and philosophically intelligible essential features, and the ways of knowing them. Chapter 3: the immediate evidence and indubitable givenness of mental, conscious life as well as questions of (brain-) death and immortality. Chapter 4: the inviolable objective dignity of personal life and its self-transcendence; a new theory of the fourfold source of human dignity and rights. Chapter 5 (in dialogue-form): methods and results of philosophy versus those of empirical life-sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crossing Central Europe is a pioneering volume that focuses on the complex networks of transcultural interrelations in Central Europe from 1900 to 2000. Scholars from Canada, the United States, and Europe identify the motifs, topics, and ways of artistic creation that define this cross-cultural region. This interdisciplinary volume is divided into two historical periods and includes analyses of literature, film, music, architecture, and media. By focusing first on the interrelations in the nineteenth and early twentieth-century, the contributors reveal a complex trans-ethnic network at play that disseminated aesthetic ideals. This network continued to be a force of aesthetic influence leading into the twenty-first century despite globalization and the influence of mass media. Helga Mitterbauer and Carrie Smith-Prei have embarked on a study of the overlapping artistic influences that have outlasted both the National Socialist regime and the Cold War.

Book Sharing the Pain of the Bitter Hearts

Download or read book Sharing the Pain of the Bitter Hearts written by Simone Lindorfer and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2007 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects the fruitful dialogue between two regional contexts, including the encounter of different methodologies, namely the context of Latin American liberation psychology as inspired by liberation theology and specifically developed in El Salvador by the Jesuit Ignacio Martin-Baro, and the context of Eastern African women. The book evaluates in four case studies the contribution of liberation psychology in overcoming various forms of gender-related violence in Eastern Africa where the author has worked since 1998 as consultant in trauma work. The book encourages the critical reflection of current trauma psychology as well as the conceptualisation of a globally oriented practical theology.

Book Pillars of a Mature Worldview

Download or read book Pillars of a Mature Worldview written by Michael Merkel and published by tredition. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our worldview determines our perception of reality and thus shapes our attitude to life and the way we live. If our worldview adequately reflects reality, we can lead an authentic and meaningful life that we will later look back on with satisfaction. A mature worldview is much more than the accumulation of facts and experiences. Whereas in the past there was primarily a lack of scientific insight, today it is above all the immense flood of information and opinions that obscures our view of essential knowledge. It is therefore not surprising that people's views sometimes differ considerably with regard to fundamental questions of life. The thesis of this book is that in this age it is possible for the first time to obtain objectively convincing answers to the great philosophical questions of life. However, for this we have to draw on two equal sources of knowledge, which in the last centuries were rather regarded as adversaries: science and religion. In their respective updated forms, they are the key to separating truth from error and to assembling various worldview fragments into a coherent overall picture. If science and faith pull together in a mature way, great insights and undreamt-of connections open up. This book provides an easy-to-read, albeit quite comprehensive, introduction to the profound principle of the unity of science and religion. After examining what distinguishes modern science and true faith, it explains how both areas of knowledge are interrelated by their very nature and work constructively together. Building on this methodological foundation, essential philosophical concepts are explained in the light of current scientific and religious knowledge, which should not be missing as necessary pillars in any mature worldview.
