Book Cognitive Aspects of Skilled Typewriting

Download or read book Cognitive Aspects of Skilled Typewriting written by W. E. Cooper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of William Book's 1908 The Psychology of Skill, in which typewriting received its first large-scale treatment from a psychological standpoint. As Book realized early on, this form of human behavior is particularly well suited to testing psychological theories of complex motor skill and its acquisition, present ing as it does a task that richly engages cognitive and motor components of programming, yet involves a form of response output that can be readily quantified. Now that typewriting is practiced so widely in workday circumstances, studying this activity offers the additional prospect of practical applicability. Until recently, relatively few studies had been conducted on the psychology of typewriting. One might speculate that this dearth of interest stemmed in part from the fact that researchers themselves rarely undertook the activity, delegating it instead to the secretarial pool. Psychological research on piano playing has produced a literature more sizable than the one on typewriting, yet the latter activity has probably been practiced for many more total human hours in this century. But contemporary developments in word processing technology have moved the typewriter into the researcher's office, and in recent years interest in accompanying psychological issues has grown.

Book Industrial Innovation

Download or read book Industrial Innovation written by Michael J. Baker and published by Springer. This book was released on 1979-06-21 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much can innovation contribute to the quality of life? How can innovation be used to develop and market commercial products? These are two major questions considered by an international symposium of active researchers from the USA and Europe in the fields of industrial innovation which was held at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. The scope of the papers is extensive and embraces the whole process of innovation, from invention through development to commercialisation and diffusion. Some papers cover broad general issues such as the social and economic consequences of innovation and government policies towards innovation and research and development. Others provide highly specific and pragmatic advice upon the management of innovation and the development of marketing strategies to promote the speedy acceptance of new products and processes. Despite the diversity of the contributions, a number of clear themes emerge. These include the importance, for successful innovation, of clearly identifying user needs and the need for total immersion in the detail of an industry or market in order to understand the diffusion of an innovation. In short, there is something in this book for anyone who is concerned with the impact and influence of technological innovation on our future.

Book Management of Accessibility for Handicapped Students in Higher Education

Download or read book Management of Accessibility for Handicapped Students in Higher Education written by United States. Department of Education and published by National Association of College & University Business Office. This book was released on 1981 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium of four mini-projects carried out by a special task force of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) addresses policy and management issues related to providing accessibility to handicapped students in higher education. Topics range from executive policy decisions on compliance with federal accessibility mandates to operational procedures for responding to specific accommodation requests. The compendium is comprised of four sections: Section 1 was developed from a series of site-visit interviews with senior-level decision makers, faculty, staff and handicapped students at six colleges and universities. It contains an overview of accessibility issues and problems that require attention, a discussion of how accessibility considerations can be incorporated into a planning and budgeting process, and a set of guidelines for assessing specific accommodation requests; Section 2 reviews 16 national data bases that describe the handicapped population in the United States and contains summary charts of the characteristics revealed. Section 3 describes the results of a survey that NACUBO mailed to a stratified sample of 944 of its member institutions concerning trends in accessibility expenditures and number and types of handicapped students served; and Section 4 lists adaptive education equipment by impairment (such as hearing or mobility) and then by function (such as writing or speaking). The document contains an index, equipment source list, and lists of information resources and services available to handicapped students. (GLR)
