Book excerpt: It's Cornwall in the early 1960s, a freezing cold night, and the police find an old man huddled in a field. No one knows who he is or how he came to be there, and for years the old man, who spends his days at the nursing home in Greybridge, says nothing. Enter Dr Simon, who has moved from London to this small Cornish town to work alongside Dr Fraser who has served the community for decades. After taking responsibility for the weekly rounds of the nursing home, he becomes increasingly interested in one particular patient - the old man who years earlier had been found huddled in a field. First he is greeted with silence, but then suddenly his patient speaks. It is then that he starts to reveal an incredible story – a story that spans continents and the universe itself, and will change the lives of those around him forever. Hillside is a novel about enduring love, hope, despair and the agony of loss. What the first readers of Hillside are saying: 'It was lovely to be so entranced by a book again…sad and mind expanding and a damn good read.' Jacinta McEwen 'I loved this novel…I couldn't put it down. Heart wrenching…evocative landscapes…a beautiful story of profound love and loss.' Gail Barnes

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A powerful study of how to bear witness in a moment when America is being called to do the same.”—Time James Baldwin grew disillusioned by the failure of the civil rights movement to force America to confront its lies about race. What can we learn from his struggle in our own moment? Named one of the best books of the year by Time, The Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune • Winner of the Stowe Prize • Shortlisted for the Goddard Riverside Stephan Russo Book Prize for Social Justice “Not everything is lost. Responsibility cannot be lost, it can only be abdicated. If one refuses abdication, one begins again.”—James Baldwin Begin Again is one of the great books on James Baldwin and a powerful reckoning with America’s ongoing failure to confront the lies it tells itself about race. Just as in Baldwin’s “after times,” argues Eddie S. Glaude Jr., when white Americans met the civil rights movement’s call for truth and justice with blind rage and the murders of movement leaders, so in our moment were the Obama presidency and the birth of Black Lives Matter answered with the ascendance of Trump and the violent resurgence of white nationalism. In these brilliant and stirring pages, Glaude finds hope and guidance in Baldwin as he mixes biography—drawn partially from newly uncovered Baldwin interviews—with history, memoir, and poignant analysis of our current moment to reveal the painful cycle of Black resistance and white retrenchment. As Glaude bears witness to the difficult truth of racism’s continued grip on the national soul, Begin Again is a searing exploration of the tangled web of race, trauma, and memory, and a powerful interrogation of what we must ask of ourselves in order to call forth a new America.

Book Radio After the Golden Age

Download or read book Radio After the Golden Age written by Jim Cox and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What became of radio after its Golden Age ended about 1960? Not long ago Arbitron found that almost 93 percent of Americans age 12 and older are regular radio listeners, a higher percentage than those turning to television, magazines, newspapers, or the Internet. But the sounds they hear now barely resemble those of radio's heyday when it had little competition as a mass entertainment and information source. Much has transpired in the past fifty-plus years: a proliferation of disc jockeys, narrowcasting, the FM band, satellites, automation, talk, ethnicity, media empires, Internet streaming and gadgets galore... Deregulation, payola, HD radio, pirate radio, the fall of transcontinental networks, the rise of local stations, conglomerate ownership, and radio's future landscape are examined in detail. Radio has lost a bit of influence yet it continues to inspire stunning innovations.

Download or read book Hollywood Online written by Ian London and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hollywood Online provides a historical account of motion picture websites from 1993 to 2008 and their marketing function as industrial advertisements for video and other media in the digital age. The Blair Witch Project is the most important example of online film promotion in cinema history. Over the last thirty years only a small number of major and independent distributors have converted internet-created buzz into box-office revenues with similar levels of success. Yet readings of how the film's internet campaign broke new ground in the summer of 1999 tend to minimize, overlook or ignore the significance of other online film promotions. Similarly, claims that Blair initiated a cycle of imitators have been repeated in film publications and academic studies for more than two decades. This book challenges three major narratives in studies about online film marketing: Hollywood's major studios and independents had no significant relationship to the internet in the 1990s; online film promotions only took off after 1999 because of Blair; and Hollywood cashed-in by initiating a cycle of imitators and scaling up corporate activities online. Hollywood Online tests these assumptions by exploring internet marketing up to and including the film's success online (Pre-Blair, 1993-9), then by examining the period immediately after Blair (Post-Blair, 2000-8) which broadly coincides with the rise and decline of DVD, as well as the emergence of the social media sites MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.
