Book excerpt: "There should never be a place of acceptable delusions in our world, but we seem to regularly (and thoughtlessly) make provisions for exactly that. We allow so much bullshit to take root and flourish under the self-imposed restraints of politeness, political correctness, and unwillingness to rock-the-boat. The Audacity of Bullshit is not designed to offend anyone, unless if by taking offense you will evaluate and re-evaluate your own delusions and make changes in a sane and lucid direction. Book The Audacity of Your Bullshit

Download or read book The Audacity of Your Bullshit written by Weasel and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Audacity of your Bullshit is a book of rage; a book that I'm releasing because what's inside is shit that's been happening all my life. Inside I explore my own encounters with racism, my own fears, and incidents that have followed me ever since I was a kid. This isn't a "my father didn't love me" book, it's a book where I process being called a spic, a faggot, and everything else imaginable by white people. Like the books before this one, The Audacity of Your Bullshit is a personal book of poetry for me. But it's also a book that carries the heaviest anger. I am angry; so angry that I can't stop shaking most days. Being Queer and Latinx makes me a target for most white people in the U.S. I can't peel the brown off of my skin. It's embedded, and it's a part of me. It is me. So pick this book up knowing it is a rock to be thrown at any racist, homophobic prick you know.

Download or read book Audacity written by Jonathan Chait and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An essential starting point for those assessing the Obama presidency.” —Washington Monthly Two presidencies later, the time has never been better to revisit the legacy of Barack Obama. In Audacity, New York Magazine writer Jonathan Chait makes the unassailable case that, in the eyes of history, Obama will be viewed as one of America’s best and most accomplished presidents. Over the course of eight years, Barack Obama has amassed an array of outstanding achievements. His administration saved the American economy from collapse, expanded health insurance to millions who previously could not afford it, negotiated an historic nuclear deal with Iran, helped craft a groundbreaking international climate accord, reined in Wall Street and crafted a new vision of racial progress. He has done all of this despite a left that frequently disdained him as a sellout, and a hysterical right that did everything possible to destroy his agenda even when they agreed with what he was doing. Now, as the page turns to our next Commander in Chief, Jonathan Chait, acclaimed as one of the most incisive and meticulous political commentators in America, digs deep into Obama’s record on major policy fronts—economics, the environment, domestic reform, health care, race, foreign policy, and civil rights—to demonstrate why history will judge our forty-fourth president as among the greatest in history. Audacity does not shy away from Obama’s failures, most notably in foreign policy. Yet Chait convincingly shows that President Obama has accomplished what candidate Obama said he would, despite overwhelming opposition—and that the hopes of those who voted for him have not been dashed despite the smokescreen of extremist propaganda and the limits of short-term perspective.

Book excerpt: Ayingbi Mayengbam, a well-meaning primary school teacher, wants to take on some part-time work over the summer, ideally a job through which she can help people. When her first day as a volunteer at a suicide hotline ends in her finding a dead body, she is done with this line of work. But soon, she is approached by the winsome Dr Rastogi, a man who runs another suicide hotline with a more altruistic approach, and she is unable to say no. While initially shy and uncertain, Ayingbi learns quickly, her warmth and sincerity enabling her to connect well with callers, her fierce determination to save lives compensating for lack of experience. Over time, however, Ayingbi is confronted with an unfortunate realization: when working at a suicide hotline, you simply can’t save everyone. On top of that, there is something sinister afoot at Rastogi’s agency, least of which are the three phones in Ayingbi’s cubicle, one of which begins to ring without being plugged in . . .

Book The Audacity of Hope

Download or read book The Audacity of Hope written by Barack Obama and published by Crown. This book was released on 2006-10-17 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Barack Obama’s lucid vision of America’s place in the world and call for a new kind of politics that builds upon our shared understandings as Americans, based on his years in the Senate “In our lowdown, dispiriting era, Obama’s talent for proposing humane, sensible solutions with uplifting, elegant prose does fill one with hope.”—Michael Kazin, The Washington Post In July 2004, four years before his presidency, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. One phrase in particular anchored itself in listeners’ minds, a reminder that for all the discord and struggle to be found in our history as a nation, we have always been guided by a dogged optimism in the future, or what Obama called “the audacity of hope.” The Audacity of Hope is Barack Obama’s call for a different brand of politics—a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the “endless clash of armies” we see in congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of “our improbable experiment in democracy.” He explores those forces—from the fear of losing to the perpetual need to raise money to the power of the media—that can stifle even the best-intentioned politician. He also writes, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment. At the heart of this book is Barack Obama’s vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. He examines the growing economic insecurity of American families, the racial and religious tensions within the body politic, and the transnational threats—from terrorism to pandemic—that gather beyond our shores. And he grapples with the role that faith plays in a democracy—where it is vital and where it must never intrude. Underlying his stories is a vigorous search for connection: the foundation for a radically hopeful political consensus. Only by returning to the principles that gave birth to our Constitution, Obama says, can Americans repair a political process that is broken, and restore to working order a government that has fallen dangerously out of touch with millions of ordinary Americans. Those Americans are out there, he writes—“waiting for Republicans and Democrats to catch up with them.”

Book Bullshit Artist

Download or read book Bullshit Artist written by Ron Schalow and published by BS Artist. This book was released on 2006-03-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Conspiracy Theories in This Book-Just a True Story of Spleen Clutching Incompetence, Forehead Slapping Stupidity and Ear Sweating Cowardice.Tough on terrorism? Strong on defense? Leadership? Not quite. Compared to George W. Bush's gutless and incompetent performance on 9/11, Brownie looks like General Patton. The President pulled a FEMA for 102 minutes while al Qaeda struck with impunity-but since W's actions on September 11 were largely ignored by the national media-most people weren't even aware of the little man's 7 minutes of ass sitting paralysis in an elementary school classroom until Michael Moore's film "Fahrenheit 9/11" exposed the frozen leader of the free world-let alone know about Bush's clueless loitering-cutting and running, and terrorist appeasing for the other 95 minutes of the attacks. Ron Schalow's "Bullshit Artist" provides a full account of the President's lollygagging, decision avoiding and hiding in the heartland on the tragic day-in Bush's own words and the tortuously twisty recollections of the White House brain trust-Card, Rove, Fleischer, Hughes, Rice, Cheney & Rumsfeld-plus the traditional bushel basket of excuses that ensue after every Bush failure. And Bush supporters like Bill Sammon, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, John Podhoretz, David Frum and Dick Morris also chime in to provide cover for the cowardly Commander-in-Chief-evidently more concerned about the image of their beloved politician than the security of the American people. Then, as if his flaccid failures on 9/11 weren't shameful enough, a delusional GW boasts of his defense prowess at least 19 times per day in the following years-whoring the terrorist attacks and 3,000 deaths on his watch to his immense political benefit-a Bullshit Artist at his best. www.bullshitartist.net

Book I Want You to Shut the F ck Up

Download or read book I Want You to Shut the F ck Up written by D.L. Hughley and published by Crown. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D.L. Hughley calls it like he sees it, discussing everything from dating to former president Barack Obama with sharp, thoughtful commentary “The best book since The Hunger Games. First he was a King of Comedy; now he’s the king of comedy authors.”—Chris Rock The American dream is in dire need of a wake-up call. A f*cked up society is like an addict: if you are in denial, then things are going to keep getting worse until you hit bottom. According to D. L. Hughley, that's the direction in which America is headed. In I Want You to Shut the F*ck Up, D.L. explains how we've become a nation of fat sissies playing Chicken Little, but in reverse: The sky is falling, but we're supposed to act like everything's fine. D.L. just points out the sobering facts: there is no standard of living by which we are the best. In terms of life expectancy, we're 36th—tied with Cuba; in terms of literacy, we're 20th—behind Kazakhstan. Things are bad now and they're only going to get worse. Unless, of course, you sit down, shut the f*ck up, and listen to what D. L. Hughley has to say. I Want You to Shut the F*ck Up is a slap to the political senses, a much needed ass-kicking of the American sense of entitlement. In these pages, D. L. Hughley calls it like he sees it, offering his hilarious yet insightful thoughts on: • Our supposedly post-racial society • The similarities between America the superpower and the drunk idiot at the bar • Why apologizing is not the answer to controversy, especially when you meant what you said • Why civil rights leaders are largely to blame for black people not being represented on television • And more!

Book excerpt: "Mixing everything that's best about dragons, dystopia, and generational conflict, Tang delivers a high flying debut that pulls no punches." --E.K. Johnston, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Things just got weird for Prudence Wu. One minute, she's cashing in on a routine smuggling deal. The next, she's escaping enforcers on the wings of what very much appears to be a sentient cybernetic dragon. Pru is used to life throwing her some unpleasant surprises--she goes to prep school, after all, and selling banned media across the border in a country with a ruthless corporate government obviously has its risks. But a cybernetic dragon? That's new. She tries to forget about the fact that the only reason she's not in jail is because some sort of robot saved her, and that she's going to have to get a new side job now that enforcers are on to her. So she's not exactly thrilled when Rebelwing shows up again. Even worse, it's become increasingly clear that the rogue machine has imprinted on her permanently, which means she'd better figure out this whole piloting-a-dragon thing--fast. Because Rebelwing just happens to be the ridiculously expensive weapon her government needs in a brewing war with its neighbor, and Pru's the only one who can fly it. Set in a wonderfully inventive near-future Washington, D.C., this hilarious, defiant debut sparkles with wit and wisdom, deftly exploring media consumption, personal freedoms, and the weight of one life as Pru, rather reluctantly, takes to the skies.

Book I Walked With Giants

Download or read book I Walked With Giants written by Jimmy Heath and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composer of more than 100 jazz pieces, three-time Grammy nominee, and performer on more than 125 albums, Jimmy Heath has earned a place of honor in the history of jazz. Over his long career, Heath knew many jazz giants such as Charlie Parker and played with other innovators including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and especially Dizzy Gillespie. Heath also won their respect and friendship. In this extraordinary autobiography, the legendary Heath creates a “dialogue” with musicians and family members. As in jazz, where improvisation by one performer prompts another to riff on the same theme, I Walked with Giants juxtaposes Heath’s account of his life and career with recollections from jazz giants about life on the road and making music on the world’s stages. His memories of playing with his equally legendary brothers Percy and Albert (aka “Tootie”) dovetail with their recollections. Heath reminisces about a South Philadelphia home filled with music and a close-knit family that hosted musicians performing in the city’s then thriving jazz scene. Milt Jackson recalls, “I went to their house for dinner...Jimmy’s father put Charlie Parker records on and told everybody that we had to be quiet till dinner because he had Bird on.... When I [went] to Philly, I’d always go to their house.” Today Heath performs, composes, and works as a music educator and arranger. By turns funny, poignant, and extremely candid, Heath’s story captures the rhythms of a life in jazz.

Book From Hitler to Jim Crow to Obama

Download or read book From Hitler to Jim Crow to Obama written by ChitlinKraut and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-11-20 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian, online, I took note of an alarming number of thisisbyus writers posting horrendous and racist comments about a young Senator from Illinois, actively campaigning for President of the United States. Posting under the moniker “Gabby on the Gulf Coast” I promoted From Hitler to Jim Crow, a story about the displaced in Pensacola, my goal: write for the world and move forward the first-hand accounts about their struggles. I so wanted the world to care about the continued and unrelenting day-to-day plight of human beings who lost everything due to a hurricane. While some thisisbyus writers posted words revealing genuine concern and some provided positive feedback regarding the prose I chose there were countless others who took issue with the title, From Hitler to Jim Crow. Up to this point I never realized how many writers peddled their influence via virtual words attempting to set their plans of distraction in place against Senator Obama. Embracing a laissez-faire attitude has never been my style and I understood the price for the poor, the displaced, was too high for me to remain silent where these savvy writers were concerned. As these writers began using Hitler and his ideology in their comparisons to Senator Obama I found myself becoming increasingly insulted. Julian, I am proud to be an American, though naturalized, and using any analogy to Hitler enabled me to confront their criminal words as it became clear Senator Obama had a real shot at the White House. Conversely, Senator Hillary Clinton’s supporters became to a greater extent venomous with what I perceived to be their race-based objections used as diversions when they saw the handwriting on the wall Senator Obama was becoming the frontrunner in the race to the White House. As I held tight to my dream and goal to show the plight of the displaced in Pensacola I found myself washed into a political hurricane once other writers became more and more aware of the strength of my conviction that Senator Obama was the only logical choice for President of the United States of America.
