Book The Age of Spiritual Machines

Download or read book The Age of Spiritual Machines written by Ray Kurzweil and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Bold futurist Ray Kurzweil, author of The Singularity Is Near, offers a framework for envisioning the future of machine intelligence—“a book for anyone who wonders where human technology is going next” (The New York Times Book Review). “Kurzweil offers a thought-provoking analysis of human and artificial intelligence and a unique look at a future in which the capabilities of the computer and the species that invented it grow ever closer.”—BILL GATES Imagine a world where the difference between man and machine blurs, where the line between humanity and technology fades, and where the soul and the silicon chip unite. This is not science fiction. This is the twenty-first century according to Ray Kurzweil, the “restless genius” (The Wall Street Journal), “ultimate thinking machine” (Forbes), and inventor of the most innovative and compelling technology of our era. In his inspired hands, life in the new millennium no longer seems daunting. Instead, it promises to be an age in which the marriage of human sensitivity and artificial intelligence fundamentally alters and improves the way we live. More than just a list of predictions, Kurzweil’s prophetic blueprint for the future guides us through the inexorable advances that will result in: • Computers exceeding the memory capacity and computational ability of the human brain (with human-level capabilities not far behind) • Relationships with automated personalities who will be our teachers, companions, and lovers • Information fed straight into our brains along direct neural pathways Eventually, the distinction between humans and computers will have become sufficiently blurred that when the machines claim to be conscious, we will believe them.

Book History of Computing Learning from the Past

Download or read book History of Computing Learning from the Past written by Arthur Tatnall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-08-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Computing: Learning from the Past Why is the history of computing important? Given that the computer, as we now know it, came into existence less than 70 years ago it might seem a little odd to some people that we are concerned with its history. Isn’t history about ‘old things’? Computing, of course, goes back much further than 70 years with many earlier - vices rightly being known as computers, and their history is, of course, important. It is only the history of electronic digital computers that is relatively recent. History is often justified by use of a quote from George Santayana who famously said that: ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it’. It is arguable whether there are particular mistakes in the history of computing that we should avoid in the future, but there is some circularity in this question, as the only way we will know the answer to this is to study our history. This book contains papers on a wide range of topics relating to the history of c- puting, written both by historians and also by those who were involved in creating this history. The papers are the result of an international conference on the History of Computing that was held as a part of the IFIP World Computer Congress in Brisbane in September 2010.

Book Comparative Programming Languages

Download or read book Comparative Programming Languages written by Leslie B. Wilson and published by Pearson Education. This book was released on 2001 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Programming Languages identifies and explains the essential concepts underlying the design and use of programming languages and provides a good balance of theory and practice. The author compares how the major languages handle issues such as declarations, types, data abstraction, information hiding, modularity and the support given to the development of reliable software systems. The emphasis is on the similarities between languages rather than their differences. The book primarily covers modern, widely-used object-oriented and procedural languages such as C, C++, Java, Pascal (including its implementation in Delphi), Ada 95, and Perl with special chapters being devoted to functional and logic languages. The new edition has been brought fully up to date with new developments in the field: the increase in the use of object-oriented languages as a student's first langua≥ the growth in importance of graphical user interfaces (GUIs); and the widespread use of the Internet.

As a young man he discovered a love of mountaineering; it was a hobby that turned him into a legend of the twentieth century. Over sixty years after his memorable ascent of Everest, this book tells the full story of Sir Edmund Hillary's extraordinary life, from his expeditions to remote corners of the world to his humanitarian activities serving the Sherpa people. Drawing on Hillary's personal archives, it is an intimate but inspiring portrait of a revered yet modest man who lived life to the full - surviving personal tragedies as well as achieving historic triumphs, earning worldwide fame and displaying tireless philanthropy. Ranging from the roof of the world to the frozen extremes of the South Pole, Sir Edmund Hillary: An Extraordinary Life is a fitting and revealing tribute to a great man. 'Ed Hillary loved this book and so do we.' Peter Hillary, Sarah Hillary
