Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC licence Paying privately for childcare is a growing phenomenon worldwide, a trend mirrored in Sweden despite the prevalence there of publicly funded daycare. This book combines theories of family practices, care and childhood studies with the personal perspectives of nannies, au pairs, parents and children to provide new understandings of what constitutes care in nanny families. The authors investigate the ways in which all the participants experience the caring situation, and expose the possibilities and problems of nanny and au pair care. Their study illuminates the ways in which paid domestic care workers 'do' family and care; in doing so, it contributes to wider political and scientific discussions of inequalities at the global and local level, reproduced in and between families, in the context of rapidly changing welfare states.

Book Adventures of an Au Pair

Download or read book Adventures of an Au Pair written by Jonnathan South and published by Europa Edizioni. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Adventures of an Au Pair, the author takes the reader on a journey to feel a whirlwind of sensations and engage emotionally to discover where social relations create deep interconnections. Viewed through the author’s lens, it’s a story of generational changes throughout which nostalgia merges with hope and zest for life. Based on the real life of the author born in ex-Yugoslavia, this autobiography depicts very well the divergence and the struggles of a country that has journeyed through communism and has experienced divisions in comparison to the democratic society of the United Kingdom and other nearby countries. Within its cover, Family represents a column with an unusual background. Friendship marks a pillar to rely on. Music and its evolution in technology (and those artists who made its history) function as background and soundtrack. A book that deserves to be read. Its sense of humour permeates throughout, making the narrative smooth, pleasant and compelling - a real treasure to dip into. Jonnathan South Born in the Seventies, in a country at the time called Yugoslavia, the author spent his childhood witnessing the communistic era of President Tito, with all the contradictions of a country whose boundaries (partially Balkan-called) historically have been widely disputed. When he decided to move to the UK, he was in his twenties and started to work as a male au pair, obtaining the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English. After writing for around thirty years for his own pleasure, in 2020, he published his first book, Morality As It Stands. His first-hand experience in different societies has exposed him to different ideologies of governance which have formed him as a person with a wider-lensed outlook on life. This book is the witty and emotionally provoking description of part of this adventurous and unconventional life.

Book Meeting Anne Frank

Download or read book Meeting Anne Frank written by Tim Whittome and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-03-07 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Meeting” Anne Frank: An Anthology captures the stories of some twenty of us who have walked with Anne Frank and her sister Margot as kindred spirits over the course of the many decades that have elapsed since both girls died from typhus and Nazi cruelty in Bergen-Belsen in 1945. None writing here actually “met” or knew Anne personally, but we have “talked” to her and “journeyed” with her kindred spirit. Anne Frank unites us at a time when so much of the world is riven by the familiar and divisive themes of partisan politics, anti-Semitism, and prejudice. You will, though, be meeting those who did know Anne’s “most adorable father” Otto, and they have kindly shared their vivid stories in this volume. You will be seeing how we cherish not just the loving father-daughter relationship that has come to mean so much for many of us, but also the inspiration of Anne’s patient mother Edith and her “ladylike” older sister Margot. Several of Anne’s surviving school friends also appear in the journeys undertaken by a number of my contributors. In the years since she died in 1945, Anne Frank has become variously the sister, mother, wife, daughter, girlfriend, or best friend to each of us writing for this anthology and to many in the wider world. We honor the happy and tragic story of Anne’s brief life and recognize the existence of, at least, “two Annes” in both her sense of fun and mischief and in her growing self-awareness while in hiding. Anne was only a child while she lived freely at Merwedeplein 37 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and barely a teenager when she died in a Nazi concentration camp for the simple “crime” of being Jewish. Anne wanted to “go on living after [her] death” in February or March 1945, and I hope we have honored her lasting wish in this work.

Book Life in a New Language

Download or read book Life in a New Language written by Distinguished Professor of Applied Linguistics Ingrid Piller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration and the social diversity it creates constitute one of the key global challenges of the early 21st century. Language and communication barriers can compromise equitable access in diverse societies, and where socioeconomic disadvantage becomes entrenched, it poses risks to security, productivity and quality of life. Clearly this is an important issue, and migrants and their language choices are heavily politicized; though political and media debates often rely on anecdotal conjecture or are ill-informed. Life in a New Language examines the language learning and settlement experiences of 130 migrants to Australia from 34 different countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America over a period of 20 years. Reusing data shared from six separate sociolinguistic ethnographies, the book illuminates participants' lived experience of learning and communicating in a new language, finding work, and doing family. Additionally, participants' experiences with racism and identity making in a new context are explored. The research uncovers significant hardship but also migrants' courage and resilience. The book has implications for language service provision, migration policy, open science, and social justice movements.

Book The Art of Compassionate Business

Download or read book The Art of Compassionate Business written by Bruno R. Cignacco and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several well-ingrained assumptions regarding the dynamics of work and business activities, which can be refuted. Some examples of these widespread assumptions in business and work environments are employees being viewed as commodities, competitors perceived as threats, companies’ resources seen as limited, and customers perceived as scarce and difficult. All this leads to the question: "Is there a way to perform business activities more humanely?" The second edition of this book challenges the reader to change the way they perform in business situations and become more focused on the human aspects of business activities. The users of this knowledge and those affected by them will undergo a profound transformation in the way they perform business activities. They will benefit from gradually testing and implementing the guidelines conveyed in this book, both in the business environment and in the workplace. When readers put these principles into practice, positive ripple effects are bound to affect other stakeholders of the organisation they work for or own. The author has refreshed all the concepts and examples introduced in the first edition which include aspects related to mission and vision, passion, business mindset, organisational learning, improvement of business conversations, use of constructive criticism, and betterment of relationships with the most relevant stakeholders (customers, suppliers, intermediaries, community, employees, etc.). The author also includes a discussion of creativity and the innovation process as well as other relevant aspects related to a healthy business environment and provides various real-life examples of companies which have adopted a loving attitude towards their stakeholders – which has become so important in the current business environment.

Book Iona Iverson s Rules for Commuting

Download or read book Iona Iverson s Rules for Commuting written by Clare Pooley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody ever talks to strangers on the train. It’s a rule. But what would happen if they did? From the New York Times bestselling author of The Authenticity Project comes an escapist read that will transport you, cheer you, and make you smile—and make you, too, wish you had Iona’s gift for bringing out the best in everyone. “A not-to-be-missed read in the mode of Gail Honeyman's Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine.” —Booklist, starred review Every day Iona, a larger-than-life magazine advice columnist, travels the ten stops from Hampton Court to Waterloo Station by train, accompanied by her dog, Lulu. Every day she sees the same people, whom she knows only by nickname: Impossibly-Pretty-Bookworm and Terribly-Lonely-Teenager. Of course, they never speak. Seasoned commuters never do. Then one morning, the man she calls Smart-But-Sexist-Manspreader chokes on a grape right in front of her. He’d have died were it not for the timely intervention of Sanjay, a nurse, who gives him the Heimlich maneuver. This single event starts a chain reaction, and an eclectic group of people with almost nothing in common except their commute discover that a chance encounter can blossom into much more. It turns out that talking to strangers can teach you about the world around you--and even more about yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dubai International Airport (DXB), Emirates Airlines, and the Burj al-Arab. Changi International Airport (SIN), Singapore Airlines, and Marina Bay Sands. Chek Lap Kok (HGK), Cathay Pacific, and The Peninsula Hotel. Kingsford Smith (SYD), Qantas Airlines, and the Wentworth Hotel. What do these collective entities have in common? Not only do they link global air hubs with city-centric long-haul airlines and destination-worthy hotels, but they are the product of a distinct strategy to boost tourism development through the synergies created by aviation development. This volume explores the evolution of tourism development through synergies created by airline, airport, and hotel development in the Persian Gulf (namely Dubai); Southeast Asia (primarily Singapore); and East Asia (mainly Hong Kong) during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These "hubs" included, but went beyond traditional models of hotel development as models for economically viable tourism programs, particularly after World War II. The book also examines how such systems integrated travelers, airlines, and airports in Australasia and Europe, while at the same time competing with imperial systems of airport and airline development. This book illuminates the strategies behind and competition between cities during the current century for air traffic, tourists, and airlines transiting between Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australasia.
