Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines how the sense of crisis that occasionally seems to overwhelm us directs and transforms Canadian and Quebec writings in English and French, and conversely, how literature and criticism set out to counterbalance the social, economic, and ideological insecurities we live in. Download or read book The Roots of International Law Les fondements du droit international written by and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays gathers contributions from leading international lawyers from different countries, generations and angles with the aim of highlighting the multifaceted history of international law. This volume questions and analyses the origins and foundations of the international legal system. A particular attention is devoted to Hugo Grotius as one of the founding fathers of the law of nations. Several contributions further question the positivist tradition initiated by Vattel and endorsed by scholars of the 19th Century. This immersion in the intellectual origins of international law is enriched by an inquiry into the practice of the law of nations, including its main patterns and changing evolution as well as the role of non-western traditions and the impact of colonization.

Centre d'études canadiennes de la Sorbonne nouvelle and published by Presses Sorbonne Nouvelle. This book was released on 1997 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Responsibility and the Enhancement of Life written by Günter Thomas and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 21st century and in a globalized world, how can an ethic of responsibility orient the powerful human striving for the enhancement of life? – This question is at the center of the program of theological humanism developed by the American ethicist William Schweiker. His ethic of responsibility takes the integrity of all human as well non-human life as a central criterion for the enhancement of life. The contributions of this collection dedicated to William Schweiker discuss and explore key elements of his work, in exemplary studies and from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. They examine the contours of this ethic, analyze the claims of a moral realism, and investigate the backgrounds of his theological humanism.

Download or read book The Cambridge Platonists in Philosophical Context written by G.A. Rogers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Platonists were defenders of tolerance in the political as well as the moral sphere ; they held that practical j u d g e m e n t came down in the last instance to individual conscience ; and they laid the foundations of our modern conceptions of conscience and liberty. But at the same time they ma intained the existence of eternal truths , and of a Good-in-itself , identical with Truth and Being, refusing to admit that freedom of conscience i m p li e d moral relativism. They were critics of dogmatism, and of the sectarian notion of "enthusiasm" as a source of illumination , on the grounds that both were disruptive of social harmony; they pleaded the cause of reason , in the hope that it could become the foundation of all human knowledge . Yet , for all that , they ma intained that a certain sort of mystical illumination lay at the heart of all true thought , and that human reason had validity only in virtue of i t s divine origin . They debated with Des cartes and took a keen interest in his mech- ism and his dualism ; they brought the atomistic theories of Democritus back into repute; and they sought to provide a detailed account of the causality link ing all phenomena.
