Book excerpt: Adults who lack a post-secondary degree or vocational certificate quite often will struggle to find a job that pays a livable wage, particularly in higher socioeconomic regions of the United States. Unfortunately, many nontraditional adult students who return to school end up not completing their degree or certification program. These students often face risk factors associated with low socio-economic status that impede their success. This study examined the risk and protective factors encountered by economically disadvantaged adult students. Fourteen academically resilient adult students participated in one-on-one, semi-structured interviews to share with the researcher risk and protective factors they encountered while in school. Conversations were recorded, transcribed and then coded utilizing the extensive previous research on resilience. To date, there is scant qualitative research focusing on the academic resilience of adult students who return to school and are successful. Therefore, the researcher believed it to be of the utmost importance to focus on this group of individuals. This study finds that work, financial stress, family obligations, and in some cases English language proficiency were the most prevalent risk factors faced by economically disadvantaged students. This study also found that personality traits, family support, and institutional supports were the most important protective factors that fostered academic resilience. Recommendations include providing economically disadvantaged students with a stipend to relieve financial stress while attending classes, professional development for instructors to drive more self-directed learning, increasing course scheduling flexibility, and mandating counseling for all adult students.

Book excerpt: This case study examined academically successful economically disadvantaged (ED) students from one intact Caucasian family through parents', students', and teachers' perceptions of the reasons for resilience. The problem is that little research exists exploring qualities of academically successful ED Caucasian students. Because being a high school dropout significantly affects students, families, schools, and society, risk factors were explored; protective factors that help students overcome risk factors were also investigated. This study describes why academically successful ED students from one intact Caucasian family in Tennessee thrive despite risk factors working against them. Findings include the importance of Christian faith to the family in the case study and its positive effect on academic achievement. Suggestions for further research are also included.

Raising the performance of socioeconomically disadvantaged students benefits both those individual students and the equity of the system overall. This brief uses 2011 eighth-grade data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) to explore (1) how prevalent academically resilient students are across education systems, and (2) what factors are associated with academic resilience within those systems.

Using longitudinal data from five countries (Australia, Canada, Denmark, Switzerland, and the United States), the report also describes the links between a student's performance near the end of compulsory education and upward social mobility - i.e. attaining a higher level of education or working in a higher-status job than one's parents.

Book excerpt: This open-access book focuses on trends in educational inequality using twenty years of grade 8 student data collected from 13 education systems by the IEAs Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) between 1995 and 2015. While the overall positive association between family socioeconomic status (SES) and student achievement is well documented in the literature, the magnitude of this relationship is contingent on social contexts and is expected to vary by education system. Research on how such associations differ across societies and how the strength of these relationships has changed over time is limited. This study, therefore, addresses an important research and policy question by examining changes in the inequality of educational outcomes due to SES over this 20-year period, and also examines the extent to which the performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds has improved over time in each education system. Education systems generally aim to narrow the achievement gap between low- and high-SES students and to improve the performance of disadvantaged students. However, the lack of quantifiable and comprehensible measures makes it difficult to assess and monitor the effect of such efforts. In this study, a novel measure of SES that is consistent across all TIMSS cycles allows students to be categorized into different socioeconomic groups. This measure of SES may also contribute to future research using TIMSS trend data. Readers will gain new insight into how educational inequality has changed in the education systems studied and how such change may relate to the more complex picture of macroeconomic changes in those societies.
