Book Attracting College bound Youth Into the Military

Download or read book Attracting College bound Youth Into the Military written by Beth J. Asch and published by Minnesota Historical Society. This book was released on 1999 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One popular program, the Montgomery GI Bill, enrolls large numbers of individuals, but the vast majority of service members use their benefits after separating from service. Thus, the military does not receive the benefits of a more educated and productive workforce, unless the individuals subsequently join a reserve component. The authors suggest the Department of Defense should consider nontraditional policy options to enhance recruitment of college-bound youth. Recruiters could target more thoroughly students on two-year college campuses, or dropouts from two- or four-year colleges. Options for obtaining some college before military service could be expanded by allowing high school seniors to first attend college, paid for by the military, and then enlist. Or the student might serve in a reserve component while in college and then enter an active component after college.

Book Attracting College Bound Youth Into The Military Toward the Development of New Recruiting Policy Options

Download or read book Attracting College Bound Youth Into The Military Toward the Development of New Recruiting Policy Options written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The armed services prefer to recruit high quality youth because they perform better and have lower attrition rates. Yet competition for this group is increasing because of fundamental changes in the civilian opportunities that these youth face. One of the most dramatic of these changes is the enormous increase in the relative returns from attending college that have occurred over the last 20 years. This report summarizes the findings of the first year of a two-year project that seeks to provide input necessary for the development and expansion of programs intended to improve the services' ability to compete against post-secondary institutions and subsequent civilian skilled employment. Specifically, the report examines trends in college attendance and the economic returns from attending college, describes the options that the military currently offers to combine service and college, and enumerates the types of issues that would need to be considered in developing and expanding recruiting programs that target college-bound youth.

Book Attitudes Aptitudes and Aspirations of American Youth

Download or read book Attitudes Aptitudes and Aspirations of American Youth written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruiting an all-volunteer military is a formidable task. To successfully enlist one eligible recruit, the Army must contact approximately 120 young people. The National Research Council explores the various factors that will determine whether the military can realistically expect to recruit an adequate fighting force-one that will meet its upcoming needs. It also assesses the military's expected manpower needs and projects the numbers of youth who are likely to be available over the next 20 years to meet these needs. With clearly written text and useful graphics, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth offers an overview of important issues for military recruiters, touching on a number of important topics including: sex and race, education and aptitude, physical and moral attributes, and military life and working conditions. In addition, the book looks at how a potential recruit would approach the decision to enlist, considering personal, family, and social values, and the options for other employment or college. Building on the need to increase young Americans' "propensity to enlist," this book offers useful recommendations for increasing educational opportunities while in the service and for developing advertising strategies that include concepts of patriotism and duty to country. Of primary value to military policymakers, recruitment officers, and analysts, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth will also interest social scientists and policy makers interested in youth trends.

Book Policy Options for Military Recruiting in the College Market Results from a National Survey

Download or read book Policy Options for Military Recruiting in the College Market Results from a National Survey written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The armed services prefer to recruit high-quality youth because of their better performance and lower attrition. However, high-quality youth are increasingly interested in attending college. While existing policies, such as the Montgomery GI Bill, that are targeted to the recruitment of the college market are likely to continue to have an effect, new policies must be developed to successfully penetrate this market and expand the supply of high-quality recruits. Indeed, the services have begun to develop programs, such as the Army's "College First" program, which allows youth to attend college prior to entry into the military and receive a college benefit provided by the military. To be fully engaged in the college market, the services may need to fine-tune these programs to enhance their effectiveness and will require a variety of programs tailored to reach different segments of the market such as college dropouts and college-bound high school youth.

Book Education and Military Manpower Requirements

Download or read book Education and Military Manpower Requirements written by Juri Toomepuu and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation provides an overview of the magnitude and complexity of the military recruiting task and the all-volunteer concept. The case for high quality military manpower is presented, based on overwhelming evidence of a strong relationship between manpower quality and cost- and combat-effectiveness. High quality manpower is particularly important because of the increasing complexity of weapons systems needed to meet future military threat. Although the quality of Army recruits has improved, the quality of the total enlisted force is still inadequate. Sufficient financial resources are needed to meet manpower quality requirements; educational incentives are ideal for attracting high quality college-bound youth and at the same time contributing to the growth of the nations human capital. Development of integrated education, manpower, and defense policies is advocated.

Book Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society

Download or read book Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has been continuously engaged in foreign conflicts for over two decades. The strains that these deployments, the associated increases in operational tempo, and the general challenges of military life affect not only service members but also the people who depend on them and who support them as they support the nation â€" their families. Family members provide support to service members while they serve or when they have difficulties; family problems can interfere with the ability of service members to deploy or remain in theater; and family members are central influences on whether members continue to serve. In addition, rising family diversity and complexity will likely increase the difficulty of creating military policies, programs and practices that adequately support families in the performance of military duties. Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society examines the challenges and opportunities facing military families and what is known about effective strategies for supporting and protecting military children and families, as well as lessons to be learned from these experiences. This report offers recommendations regarding what is needed to strengthen the support system for military families.

Book Creating a Veteran Friendly Campus Strategies for Transition and Success

Download or read book Creating a Veteran Friendly Campus Strategies for Transition and Success written by Robert Ackerman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the United States? wars in Afghanistan and Iraq continue, increasing numbers of students who experienced combat will enroll in colleges and universities. There is mounting evidence that these veterans will require support unique to their needs beyond the processing of financial aid paperwork from the Veterans Administration. Obviously, combat frequently inflicts injuries, both physical and mental, that will require attention, but veterans are a unique population in other ways as well. Soldiers experience extraordinary bonding in wartime, and colleges can provide opportunities for that fellowship to be a source of support and connection. Female veterans will bring a new, nontraditional perspective to campus, and student service organizations should pay careful attention. There is also a significant group of students who leave for service and return?under the best of circumstances, they need accommodation to succeed. Institutions of higher education traditionally have responded to the needs of special student populations by developing programs and offering services. This volume contains information about programmatic initiatives that can help create a welcoming environment for veterans, one that encourages serious, creative involvement. The authors bring broad experience and deliberate consideration to bear on questions that are only becoming more important to the entire spectrum of American colleges and universities. This is the 126th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report series New Directions for Student Services, an indispensable resource for vice presidents of student affairs, deans of students, student counselors, and other student services professionals. Each issue of New Directions for Student Services offers guidelines and programs for aiding students in their total development: emotional, social, physical, and intellectual.

Book A More Perfect Military

Download or read book A More Perfect Military written by Diane H. Mazur and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys show that the all-volunteer military is our most respected and trusted institution, but over the last thirty-five years it has grown estranged from civilian society. Without a draft, imperfect as it was, the military is no longer as representative of civilian society. Fewer people accept the obligation for military service, and a larger number lack the knowledge to be engaged participants in civilian control of the military. The end of the draft, however, is not the most important reason we have a significant civil-military gap today. A More Perfect Military explains how the Supreme Court used the cultural division of the Vietnam era to change the nature of our civil-military relations. The Supreme Court describes itself as a strong supporter of the military and its distinctive culture, but in the all-volunteer era, its decisions have consistently undermined the military's traditional relationship to law and the Constitution. Most people would never suspect there was anything wrong, but our civil-military relations are now as constitutionally fragile as they have ever been. A More Perfect Military is a bracingly candid assessment of the military's constitutional health. It crosses ideological and political boundaries and is challenging-even unsettling-to both liberal and conservative views. It is written for those who believe the military may be slipping away from our common national experience. This book is the blueprint for a new national conversation about military service.
