Book Attosecond Molecular Dynamics

Download or read book Attosecond Molecular Dynamics written by Marc J J Vrakking and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attosecond science is a new and rapidly developing research area in which molecular dynamics are studied at the timescale of a few attoseconds. Within the past decade, attosecond pump–probe spectroscopy has emerged as a powerful experimental technique that permits electron dynamics to be followed on their natural timescales. With the development of this technology, physical chemists have been able to observe and control molecular dynamics on attosecond timescales. From these observations it has been suggested that attosecond to few-femtosecond timescale charge migration may induce what has been called “post-Born-Oppenheimer dynamics”, where the nuclei respond to rapidly time-dependent force fields resulting from transient localization of the electrons. These real-time observations have spurred exciting new advances in the theoretical work to both explain and predict these novel dynamics. This book presents an overview of current theoretical work relevant to attosecond science written by theoreticians who are presently at the forefront of its development. It is a valuable reference work for anyone working in the field of attosecond science as well as those studying the subject.

Book Attosecond Experiments on Plasmonic Nanostructures

Download or read book Attosecond Experiments on Plasmonic Nanostructures written by Johannes Schötz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-13 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johannes Schötz presents the first measurements of optical electro-magnetic near-fields around nanostructures with subcycle-resolution. The ability to measure and understand light-matter interactions on the nanoscale is an important component for the development of light-wave-electronics, the control and steering of electron dynamics with the frequency of light, which promises a speed-up by several orders of magnitude compared to conventional electronics. The experiments presented here on metallic nanotips, widely used in experiments and applications, do not only demonstrate the feasibility of attosecond streaking as a unique tool for fundamental studies of ultrafast nanophotonics but also represent a first important step towards this goal.

Book Ultrafast Dynamics Driven by Intense Light Pulses

Download or read book Ultrafast Dynamics Driven by Intense Light Pulses written by Markus Kitzler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the recent vivid developments in the research field of ultrashort intense light pulses for probing and controlling ultrafast dynamics. The recent fascinating results in studying and controlling ultrafast dynamics in ever more complicated systems such as (bio-)molecules and structures of meso- to macroscopic sizes on ever shorter time-scales are presented. The book is written by some of the most eminent experimental and theoretical experts in the field. It covers the new groundbreaking research directions that were opened by the availability of new light sources such as fully controlled intense laser fields with durations down to a single oscillation cycle, short-wavelength laser-driven attosecond pulses and intense X-ray pulses from the upcoming free electron lasers. These light sources allowed the investigation of dynamics in atoms, molecules, clusters, on surfaces and very recently also in nanostructures and solids in new regimes of parameters which, in turn, led to the identification of completely new dynamics and methods for controlling it. Example topics covered by this book include the study of ultrafast processes in large molecules using attosecond pulses, control of ultrafast electron dynamics in solids with shaped femtosecond laser pulses, light-driven ultrafast plasmonic processes on surfaces and in nanostructures as well as research on atomic and molecular systems under intense X-ray radiation. This book is equally helpful for people who would like to step into this field (e.g. young researchers), for whom it provides a broad introduction, as well as for already experienced researchers who may enjoy the exhaustive discussion that covers the research on essentially all currently studied objects and with all available ultrafast pulse sources.

Book Passive Optical Resonators for Next Generation Attosecond Metrology

Download or read book Passive Optical Resonators for Next Generation Attosecond Metrology written by Ioachim Pupeza and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to the development of a new generation of high pulse-repetition frequency instruments for multi-dimensional attosecond-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy (attosecond PES). It investigates the power scaling of femtosecond enhancement cavities for efficient intracavity high-harmonics generation (HHG). Further, it derives and verifies advanced resonator designs that feature large illuminated spots on all mirrors, which mitigate both intensity- and thermally-induced enhancement limitations. The dynamics of a high-finesse, passive resonator in the presence of a highly nonlinear optical process such as HHG are quantitatively investigated, both theoretically and experimentally. These investigations are instrumental in achieving the holistic optimization of the XUV source reported on here, which for the first time reached intracavity HHG conversion efficiencies comparable to those achieved in single-pass setups with a similar gas target. Coupling out the XUV beam from the enhancement cavity by purely geometric means, employing both the fundamental and higher-order transverse Gaussian modes, is studied. This offers the advantages of robustness, low distortion to the participating pulses, and photon-energy scalability. Last but not least, the author provides a range of proof-of-principle attosecond angle-resolved PES experiments. The book gives an outlook on the possible future development of cavity-enhanced HHG and an extensive discussion on the generation of isolated XUV attosecond pulses via intracavity wavefront rotation.

Book Strong field and Attosecond Physics in Solids

Download or read book Strong field and Attosecond Physics in Solids written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review the status of strong-field and attosecond processes in bulk transparent solids near the Keldysh tunneling limit. For high enough fields and low-frequency excitations, the optical and electronic properties of dielectrics can be transiently and reversibly modified within the applied pulse. In Ghimire et al (2011 Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 167407) non-parabolic band effects were seen in photon-assisted tunneling experiments in ZnO crystals in a strong mid-infrared field. Using the same ZnO crystals, Ghimire et al (2011 Nat. Phys. 7 138-41) reported the first observation of non-pertubative high harmonics, extending well above the bandgap into the vacuum ultraviolet. Recent experiments by Schubert et al (2014 Nat. Photonics 8 119-23) showed a carrier envelope phase dependence in the harmonic spectrum in strong-field 30 THz driven GaSe crystals which is the most direct evidence yet of the role of sub-cycle electron dynamics in solid-state harmonic generation. The harmonic generation mechanism is different from the gas phase owing to the high density and periodicity of the crystal. For example, this results in a linear dependence of the high-energy cutoff with the applied field in contrast to the quadratic dependence in the gas phase. Sub-100 attosecond pulses could become possible if the harmonic spectrum can be extended into the extreme ultraviolet (XUV). Here we report harmonics generated in bulk MgO crystals, extending to $\sim 26$ eV when driven by ~35 fs, 800 nm pulses focused to a ~1 VÅ$^{-1}$ peak field. The fundamental strong-field and attosecond response also leads to Wannier-Stark localization and reversible semimetallization as seen in the sub-optical cycle behavior of XUV absorption and photocurrent experiments on fused silica by Schiffrin et al (2013 Nature 493 70-4) and Schultze et al (2013 Nature 493 75-8). These studies are advancing our understanding of fundamental strong-field and attosecond physics in solids with potential applications for compact coherent short-wavelength sources and ultra-high speed optoelectronics.

Download or read book Attosecond Strong Field Control written by Mirko Holler and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2010 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-order harmonics are a unique tool to investigate dynamics in atomic and molecular systems as they allow the generation of pulses with attosecond duration. In this thesis, high-order harmonics are investigated experimentally in temporal and spectral domain. In spectral domain, an interference structure between the two shortest electron quantum paths of the generation process is observed. These interferences are investigated with laser intensities below, around and above the intensity of barrier suppression. To enable attosecond time-resolved measurements, a versatile beamline is developed and implemented. Typical attosecond experiments rely on a cross-correlation measurement of the combined XUV / IR fields with attosecond resolution. Attosecond pulse trains (APT) are temporally characterized by means of a RABBITT (reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two photon transitions) measurement. These APTs are then used in an all-optical XUV/IR pump-probe measurement in a dense helium gas target. The absorption is influenced by a strong IR field. This experiment can be regarded as the first all-optical XUV/IR pump-probe measurement with attosecond resolution.
