Ayon and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was a collaborative assignment in which each chapter was evenly split with each researcher. The purpose of this project was to explore the attitudes of social work students at the California State University, Sacramento, Master of Social Work program, toward undocumented Latino immigrants receiving social welfare benefits in the United States. Little research has been done to date on social work students' attitudes toward undocumented Latino immigrants. Today this topic is important as our economy finds itself in an economic recession. Within this time, many are to blame, including undocumented Latino immigrants. It is important to explore attitudes of those in the social work profession towards this population. More specifically, an individual social worker's perception about undocumented Latino immigrants, as it may influence the manner in which services should be provided to people of this population. This exploratory study consisted of a non-random sample of 115 (N=115) social work students attending the spring 2011 semester. There was a 100% participation rate of those students who were asked to participate. The overall results indicated that social work students who participated in the study hold positive attitudes toward undocumented Latino immigrants.

Book Success Factors Contributing to College Enrollment Among Latino Migrant Students

Download or read book Success Factors Contributing to College Enrollment Among Latino Migrant Students written by Araceli Leon and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to identify the factors that assisted migrant Latino college students in pursuing higher education when they were in high school. Researchers hypothesized that the study findings on challenges and protective factors for the students would be consistent with those in the literature. Study findings failed to give evidence to support those challenging factors identified in the literature review. They, however, confirmed and showed consistency with the protective factors identified. The study employed of a self-administered survey completed by 42 students enrolled in the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at the California State University, Sacramento. The survey contains 50 items, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative data. All study participants are first-generation college students. A significant amount of students reported their parents had less than a high school education. Scholarships and grants are students' major source of funding for college. Mobility, language, financial instability, and the need of having a job were not perceived by them as challenges throughout high school. Important protective factors in high school included family, peers, and mentors. Qualitative findings show that having a mentor or a significant person who are caring and reassuring often inspired students to get a college degree. This connection is their top motivating factor in moving towards their academic goals. Supportive services in high school for migrant students and services such as CAMP have found to be extremely helpful in facilitating students to pursue and to remain in their college education. It is crucial for social workers to work closely with the Latino community, parents, and students through effective education, counseling, and other supportive programs to promote students' academic and personal successes in high school and in college.

Book The Perception of Social Work in the Latino Community

Download or read book The Perception of Social Work in the Latino Community written by Maria L. Alvarez and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore whether the experiences and attitudes Latinos had towards social work affected their decision to seek help and whether social workers could minimize barriers and be more culturally competent within the Latino community. Qualitative research was conducted using a 2-part instruments design: (1) survey and (2) interview. A total of 15 Latinos living in the San Fernando Valley participated in this study. Over the course of a month, self-reported written answers were collected and face-to-face, as well as phone interviews, were conducted. The most common theme found was the lack of awareness of the social work profession and the barriers they faced. The majority of the participants were unaware of what social workers did for individuals, families and the community. Social workers were mistakenly perceived to be eligibility and social service workers, and front office staff and academic counselors, and focused mainly on child welfare. The lack of knowledge of what a social worker was and the misconception of a social worker title clearly was found to be a contributing factor in the misperceptions many of the participants had in this study.

Book The Effect of Public Welfare Program Participation on the Psychological Distress Among Latino Immigrants

Download or read book The Effect of Public Welfare Program Participation on the Psychological Distress Among Latino Immigrants written by Janet Ceballos and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of public program participation on the psychological distress among Latino immigrants. The study will consider factors such as, TANF or CalWORKs, food stamps, food insecurity, access to Medicare, and Medi-Cal to investigate the possible effect between public program participation and psychological distress among Latino immigrants. The following research is a quantitative study in which secondary data are used as a means of gathering information from the (CHIS) adult 2015--2016. The study contained a total of 21,034 Latino immigrant responds. In this study, the researcher analyzed the data using descriptive statistics including frequency, mean, standard deviation, and T-test analysis. Findings show that Latino immigrants who participate in TANF or CalWORKs, food stamps, Medicare, and Medical reported higher psychological distress than peers who do not participate in these programs. The study also found elevated levels of psychological distress among Latino immigrants who experience food insecurity and lack access to Medicare. Given the fact that this research shows that public programming is a strong predictor of psychological well-being, it is important that social workers work to bridge the gap between the public programming and the psychological distress. Moreover, it is important practitioners should use friendly measures to assess public programming to create a safe environment.

Book In the Shadows of Academia

Download or read book In the Shadows of Academia written by Zitlali Torres and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent report by the Pew Research Center (2014) estimates that approximately 200,000-225,000 undocumented students are enrolled in post-secondary institutions across the United States (Teranishi, Suarez-Orozco & Suarez-Orozco, 2014). The recent passage of federal and state policies which permit eligible undocumented students to receive in-state-tuition rates, state financial aid, institutional scholarships and temporary employment authorization have significantly contributed to the increase in enrollment of undocumented students into institutions of higher learning (Olivas, 2010; Perez, 2014; Richards & Bohorquez, 2015). However, research on this rapidly growing student population continues to lag far behind (Teranishi, Suarez-Orozco & Suarez-Orozco, 2014). The purpose of this work was to interview undocumented college students to analyze, what if any, gender differences and or similarities existed between undocumented female and male students as they pursued a post-secondary education. This study examined the following questions; What are the educational, psychological and social experiences of undocumented female versus male college students? What motivates undocumented female versus male students to pursue a post-secondary education? In what ways, if any, do undocumented female and male students utilize mentors and support systems to navigate college? While undocumented female and male college students encountered similar experiences as a result of their shared lack of legal immigration status; through an intersectional analysis of gender, race and citizenship status it was evident that the educational, psychological and social experiences of undocumented female and male students varied as a result of gender-socialization, double-standards and stereotypes towards undocumented immigrants. The results of this study indicated that undocumented female and male college students encountered gender differences as well as similarities which impacted their educational, psychological and social experiences. For instance, both female and male participants reported being emotionally impacted by family separation, were inspired to become role models for their younger siblings and determined to persevere through their educational goals. Furthermore, there were distinctive gender differences in disclosing immigration status, engagement in extracurricular activities and parental advice related to employment and career aspirations.
