Book excerpt: Using a quantitative approach, the researcher investigated the attitudes of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III (D3) men’s (n = 69) and women’s (n = 53) sports student-athletes (SAs). This study aimed to examine the current attitudes of male, female, and non-binary NCAA D3 SAs towards male, female, and non-binary strength and conditioning coaches (SCCs). Attitudes were assessed for 121 participants via a 12- question modified Attitudes of Athletes Toward Male versus Female Coaches Questionnaire (AAMFC-Q; Magnusen & Rhea, 2009) consisting of Likert-scaled questions ranking feelings towards a described, gendered SCC. The researcher determined there to be no significant interactions between gendered sport and condition, suggesting that previously noted SCC gender preferences no longer prevail in D3 athletics. However, via main effects significant differences between gendered sport was noted when participants were prompted with considering how they would feel about the hypothetical coach’s ability to motivate and encourage them. Additionally, significant differences between conditions were noted in items examining the participants’ ability to take punishment from the hypothetical coach and, when directly asked if they preferred the gender of the described coach. The findings of the present study are pertinent to practitioners and administrators working with SCCs and SAs of varying gender identities. Professionals involved in the strength and conditioning training of D3 student-athletes can use the results of the current study to inform hiring decisions, when educating staff and athletes, and to better understand the athletes' feelings towards SCCs. Additionally, involved personnel should consider this evidence of the prevailing existence of hegemonic masculinity in athletics and evaluate how they may work to dissuade the continuance of such.

Book More Hurdles to Clear

Download or read book More Hurdles to Clear written by United States Commission on Civil Rights and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication reviews the history of women and girls in athletics, assesses the current status of female participation in high school and college competitive athletics, and summarizes recent policy interpretations by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (dhew) of Title ix of the Education Amendments of 1972. The historical review focuses on American attitudes toward female physicality from the Victorian era to the present. Current obstacles to female participation in sports are identified as sex stereotyping of athletics as unfeminine, the idea that females should not engage in strenuous activity, and discrimination in the allocation of resources for sports. The role of Title ix (which prohibits sex discrimination in Federally-assisted education programs) in ameliorating discrimination in athletics is explained. Changes in female participation in competitive athletics since 1970 are described and related to the implementation of Title ix. Participation figures, by sex, are presented separately for high schools, two year colleges, and four year colleges, and are broken down individually for football, baseball/softball, basketball, tennis, and track. Also described are college budget allocations for men's and women's intercollegiate sports. Appended to the report are statistical tables and discussions and regulations concerning DHEW's jurisdiction under Title ix. (Gc).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We trained just as hard and we have just as much love for our sport. We deserve to play just as much as any other athlete. . . . I am sick and tired of being treated like I am second rate. I plan on standing up for what is right and fighting for equality.” —Sage Ohlensehlen, Women’s Swim Team Captain at the University of Iowa Fifty years ago, US president Richard Nixon signed Title IX into law, making it illegal for federally funded education programs to discriminate based on sex. The law set into motion a massive boom in girls and women’s sports teams, from kindergarten to the collegiate level. Professional women’s sports grew in turn. Title IX became a massive touchstone in the fight for gender equality. So why do girls and women—including trans and intersex women—continue to face sexist attitudes and unfair rules and regulations in sports? The truth is that the road to equality in sports has been anything but straightforward, and there is still a long way to go. Schools, universities, and professional organizations continue to struggle with addressing unequal pay, discrimination, and sexism in their sports programming. Delve into the history and impact of Title IX, learn more about the athletes at the forefront of the struggle, and explore how additional changes could lead to equality in sports. “Girls are socialized to know . . . that gender roles are already set. Men run the world. Men have the power. Men make the decisions. . . . When these girls are coming out, who are they looking up to telling them that’s not the way it has to be? And where better to do that than in sports?” —Muffet McGraw, Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Notre Dame “Fighting for equal rights and equal opportunities entails risk. It demands you put yourself in harm’s way by calling out injustice when it occurs. Sometimes it’s big things, like a boss making overtly sexist remarks or asserting they won’t hire women. But far more often, it’s little, seemingly innocuous, things . . . that sideline the women whose work you depend on every day. You can use your privilege to help those who don’t have it. It’s really as simple as that.” —Liz Elting, women’s rights advocate

Book Scale Development

Download or read book Scale Development written by Elizabeth Mary Mullin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Homophobia and heterosexism in women's athletics have been studied extensively using a qualitative approach (e.g., Blinde & Taub, 1992; Kauer & Krane, 2006; Krane, 1996, 1997, 2001) . Limited research from a quantitative approach has been conducted in the area (e.g. Forbes, Stevens, & Lathrop, 2002; Mullin, 2008) and none with a sport-specific questionnaire with evidence of reliability and validity. The purpose of the current study was to develop a valid and reliable questionnaire to measure heterosexist attitudes in women's collegiate athletics based on the tripartite model of attitudes (Zanna & Rempel, 1988) . A panel of experts (N = 27) analyzed a pool of 40 items for item-content related validity. After quantitative and qualitative analysis of the responses from the experts, a national sample of female collegiate athletes (N = 223) completed the second version of the Heterosexist Attitudes in Sport -- Lesbian (HAS-L) questionnaire. A five-factor solution emerged from the exploratory factor analysis. A second sample (N = 620) of female collegiate athletes completed the HAS-L. A confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the factor structure. Initial evidence of construct validity was found for an 18-item measure of heterosexist attitudes with foursubscales: (1) Cognitive/Affect, (2) Language Behaviors, (3) Inclusion Behaviors, and (4) Avoidance of the Lesbian Label. Composite reliability of the four subscales ranged from .64 to .84.
