Book Gender Roles in Ireland

Download or read book Gender Roles in Ireland written by Margret Fine-Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender Roles in Ireland: three decades of attitude change documents changing attitudes toward the role of women in Ireland from 1975 to 2005, a key period of social change in this society. The book presents replicated measures from four separate surveys carried out over three decades. These cover a wide range of gender role attitudes as well as key social issues concerning the role of women in Ireland, including equal pay, equal employment opportunity, maternal employment, contraception etc. Attitudes to abortion, divorce and moral issues are also presented and discussed in the context of people’s voting behaviour in national referenda. Taken together, the data available in these studies paint a detailed and complex picture of the evolving role of women in Ireland during a period of rapid social change and key developments in social legislation. The book brings the results up to the present by including new data on current gender role issues from Margret Fine-Davis' latest research.

Download or read book Regulating sexuality written by Leanne McCormick and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a groundbreaking examination of the attempts to regulate female sexuality in twentieth-century Northern Ireland, which opens up new and exciting areas of a previously neglected history. A wide-ranging study, it explores the sexual experiences of women in the context of the distinctive religious, political and social circumstances of Northern Ireland during the twentieth century. The commonality of attitudes of the Catholic Churches toward the control of female sexuality is revealed, along with the similarity of views concerning female behaviour. While the ways in which various authorities tried to control female behaviour are explored, it is also argued that women were not simply victims, but employed a variety of survival strategies and active agency, no matter how difficult their circumstances were. This work will appeal not only to an academic audience but also to non-academic readers interested in a new and exciting view of Northern Ireland’s past.

Book Women and Work in Ireland

Download or read book Women and Work in Ireland written by Margret Fine-Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-18 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the evolution of women’s participation in the labour force in Ireland over the last five decades. This was largely spearheaded by married women and mothers, leading to many related social issues including childcare, flexible working, the sharing of domestic work and work-life balance. The book presents empirical data on these topics, drawn from the author’s research spanning several decades, and shows how attitudes have evolved and influenced the development of social policy. The book begins by exploring the factors which predisposed some married women to enter the workplace in the early 1970s while most did not and examines the relative well-being of housewives and employed married women. It demonstrates the effects the anti-discrimination legislation of the 1970s had on women’s perceived discrimination over time, showing that women initially denied their own discrimination. The history of childcare policy is examined from the early Government Working Party reports of the 1980s to the evolution of childcare policy in Ireland. Issues of work-life balance are presented through cross-cultural comparisons from Ireland and several European countries, and key questions are asked, such as "are men who work part-time seen as less serious about their careers?" The concluding chapter focuses on how women’s role in the workplace impacts on men and gender relations. Questions are posed concerning the ways in which men’s roles need to adapt and the extent to which workplaces and social policy also need to change to accommodate men and women’s needs for work-life balance. The book will be of interest to social scientists and to students. It will be a valuable resource for courses in the sociology of work and the family, gender studies, social psychology and Irish studies. By providing quantitative data in an accessible form, it will also provide a valuable case study for courses in social research methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an essential resource on attitudes to social and political issues in contemporary Northern Ireland. Within this report, an authoritative group of academics and those involved in informing policy-making within the community summarise and interpret data from the annual Northern Ireland Life and Times survey. Topics explored include the extent of change in attitudes centred on religion, politics and community relations. Other topics contribute to the more general social policy debate and include health, social capital, lifelong learning, men’s issues, culture and attitudes to work. This is the ninth report in the series on social attitudes in Northern Ireland. The chapters draw on data from the 2000 and 2001 Northern Ireland Life and Times surveys, as well as on data from previous years, thus providing an in-depth examination of changing values in Northern Ireland.

Book Gender Democracy and Inclusion in Northern Ireland

Download or read book Gender Democracy and Inclusion in Northern Ireland written by C. Davies and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-10-24 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainstream politics in Northern Ireland has not been welcoming to women, but many women have been present in community and voluntary organizations where their contribution has been outstanding. This book examines four organizations (including the recently-formed Northern Ireland Women's Coalition) where women have been active. It discusses the processes and structures created by these groups in order to work democratically across differences and argues that their experiences are invaluable to the development of feminist debates on democracy and difference.

Book Women Unionism and Loyalism in Northern Ireland

Download or read book Women Unionism and Loyalism in Northern Ireland written by Rachel Ward and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politically active unionist and loyalist women in Northern Ireland are rendered relatively invisible because of the predominantly male public faces of unionism and loyalism. This is evident in the media images of the male-dominated annual parades by organisations such as the Orange Order, statements by mostly male political party spokespersons, and the murals of loyalist paramilitaries that designate territorial possession and seldom depict female involvement. The book seeks to counter the stereotype that unionist and loyalist women 'just make the tea'. The aim of the book is to shed light on the form and extent of unionist and loyalist women's political participation. The research conducted shows that unionist and loyalist women are more active political participants than the tea-making stereotype suggests; they have varied political roles, although these are often invisible. Whilst exploring the national and other cross-cutting identities held by unionist and loyalist women and the motivations behind their political activity, the evidence also suggests that the women have been motivated, at least in part, by their nationalism. However, this approach does not fully explain the form and extent of respondents' political action, apparent from a consideration of comparative figures of women and political participation. The book concludes that a greater synthesis with the literature on gender and political participation is needed.Ã?Â?Ã?Â?

Book Irish Women and Nationalism

Download or read book Irish Women and Nationalism written by Louise Ryan and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of Irish nationalism have been primarily historical in scope and overwhelmingly male in content. Too often, the ‘shadow of the gunman’ has dominated. Little recognition has been given to the part women have played, yet over the centuries they have undertaken a variety of roles – as combatants, prisoners, writers and politicians. In this exciting new book the full range of women’s contribution to the Irish nationalist movement is explored by writers whose interests range from the historical and sociological to the literary and cultural. From the little known contribution of women to the earliest nationalist uprisings of the 1600s and 1700s, to their active participation in the republican campaigns of the twentieth century, different chapters consider the changing contexts of female militancy and the challenge this has posed to masculine images and structures. Using a wide range of sources, including textual analysis, archives and documents, newspapers and autobiographies, interviews and action research, individual writers examine sensitive and highly complex debates around women’s role in situations of conflict. At the cutting edge of contemporary scholarship, this is a major contribution to wider feminist debates about the gendering of nationalism, raising questions about the extent to which women’s rights, demands and concerns can ever be fully accommodated within nationalist movements.
