Book The Impact of College on Students

Download or read book The Impact of College on Students written by Theodore Mead Newcomb and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark work, Kenneth Feldman and Theodore Newcomb review and synthesize the findings of more than 1,500 studies conducted over four decades on the subject. Writing in 1991, Ernest Pascarella and Patrick Terenzini maintained that The Impact of College on Students not only provided the first comprehensive conceptual map of generally uncharted terrain, but also generated a number of major hypotheses about how college influences students. They also noted that Feldman and Newcomb helped to stimulate a torrent of studies on the characteristics of collegiate institutions and how students change and benefit during and after their college years from college attendance. The Impact of College on Students is now a standard text in graduate courses as well as a standard and frequently cited reference for scholars, students, and administrators of higher education. Much of what we understand about the developmental influence of college is based on this work. In a new introduction, Feldman outlines the background for the production of the book, points out the kinds of research that have been done since it was written, and elaborates on the "accentuation effect" posited in it. He also offers a sensitive statement on the different potentials of research designs and analyses derived from sociology and psychology.

Book Multidimensional Personality and Attitudes of College of Teacher Educators towards Teaching Profession

Download or read book Multidimensional Personality and Attitudes of College of Teacher Educators towards Teaching Profession written by Dr Mohammad Haneef and published by Ashok Yakkaldevi. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1 OVERVIEW The teacher has an obvious interest in the determinants of personality. Only by knowing where personality comes from can he decide the extent to which the personalities of the children in his class are fixed by what happens outside school, and the extent to which they can be altered by what happens inside it. Personality is the result of interaction between inherited and environmental factors and we need now to look at the evidence for this view, taking heredity first. The first three years of life, during which, as we have seen, the effects of maternal deprivation seem particularly hard to reverse, are an example of what he psychologist calls a critical period in the development of the child. A critical period is, in fact, any stage in human or animal development during which the organism is maximally sensitive to the presence of certain kinds of stimuli. Denied these stimuli, behaviour which is regarded as characteristic of the species concerned does not develop, even though there is often a considerable gap in time between the critical period and the age at which the behaviour normally occurs. Thus, deprived of mothering themselves in infancy, Harlow's monkeys grew up incapable of mothering their own young, and the same may well hold true for humans, as any veteran social worker who has watched the depressing cycle of aggressive and violent mothering styles pas from one general to the next will readily attest.

Book The Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instruments STEBI A and B

Download or read book The Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instruments STEBI A and B written by James Deehan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Springer Brief is to provide a comprehensive review of both the STEBI methods and findings through the use of a clearly defined analytic framework. A systematic review of literature yielded 107 STEBI-A research items and 140 STEBI-B research items. The STEBI instruments have been used in a wide range of qualitative, cross sectional, longitudinal and experimental designs. Analysis of the findings of the papers reveals that in-service and pre-service programs that use innovative practices such as cooperative learning, inquiry based investigation and nature of science instruction can produce positive growth in participants’ science teaching efficacy beliefs. The personal science teaching efficacy beliefs of pre-service and in-service teachers showed greater mean scores and higher growth than their outcome expectancies. Implications are discussed.

Book The School Teacher in England and the United States

Download or read book The School Teacher in England and the United States written by R. K. Kelsall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The School Teacher in England and the United States: The Findings of Empirical Research investigates what makes school teachers distinct from other people in England and the United States. This book brings together for the first time the findings of a very large number of surveys on both sides of the Atlantic designed to throw light on a number of critical questions, such as the teachers' family backgrounds, their motives for becoming teachers, or the types of role-conflict affecting teachers in general, and women teachers (including married women) in particular. This monograph is comprised of 10 chapters and begins by comparing the British and American educational settings. The next chapter discusses the role that society is believed to expect teachers to fulfill, such as emancipation from the child's primary emotional attachment to his family, or the technical component of the skills which have to be transmitted to the pupils to enable them to fulfill their future adult roles. The empirical evidence on society's view of what role the teachers should play is then analyzed. A typology of incompatibilities inherent in teacher role is also presented. The remaining chapters focus on the teachers' expressed motivation in career choice; the stages at which people choose teaching; teacher effectiveness and career satisfaction; and the teachers' professional status. The final chapter considers some policy alternatives for addressing the training and supply of teachers. This text will be a useful resource for teachers, school administrators, and educational policymakers.
