Download or read book Mathematics Education and Technology Rethinking the Terrain written by Celia Hoyles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-09 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics Education and Technology-Rethinking the Terrain revisits the important 1985 ICMI Study on the influence of computers and informatics on mathematics and its teaching. The focus of this book, resulting from the seventeenth Study led by ICMI, is the use of digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning in countries across the world. Specifically, it focuses on cultural diversity and how this diversity impinges on the use of digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning. Within this focus, themes such as mathematics and mathematical practices; learning and assessing mathematics with and through digital technologies; teachers and teaching; design of learning environments and curricula; implementation of curricula and classroom practice; access, equity and socio-cultural issues; and connectivity and virtual networks for learning, serve to organize the study and bring it coherence. Providing a state-of-the-art view of the domain with regards to research, innovating practices and technological development, Mathematics Education and Technology-Rethinking the Terrain is of interest to researchers and all those interested in the role that digital technology plays in mathematics education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the development of research in mathematics education cultures and its products from the perspective of local educators. It consists of contributions from Mainland China, Indonesia, Korea, Macao, Singapore, the Philippines, and Turkey. This book examines the development of the culture of research in the respective countries and also reviews the research conducted in the recent past in mathematics education. It takes a critical stance through identifying the various accomplishments, and identifying challenges for the future of research in terms of its diversification and quality. Divided into two sections, the first section considers factors around the development of a research culture in the respective countries by focusing on the means used to develop research expertise and quality. The second section consists of overviews of the area of research and methodologies conducted in mathematics education in the various countries, with the intention of highlighting the research topics conducted as well as discussing omissions of such research.

Download or read book Attitudes Beliefs Motivation and Identity in Mathematics Education written by Markku S. Hannula and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book records the state of the art in research on mathematics-related affect. It discusses the concepts and theories of mathematics-related affect along the lines of three dimensions. The first dimension identifies three broad categories of affect: motivation, emotions, and beliefs. The book contains one chapter on motivation, including discussions on how emotions and beliefs relate to motivation. There are two chapters that focus on beliefs and a chapter on attitude which cross-cuts through all these categories. The second dimension covers a rapidly fluctuating state to a more stable trait. All chapters in the book focus on trait-type affect and the chapter on motivation discusses both these dimensions. The third dimension regards the three main levels of theorizing: physiological (embodied), psychological (individual) and social. All chapters reflect that mathematics-related affect has mainly been studied using psychological theories.

Download or read book Affect and Mathematical Problem Solving written by Douglas B. McLeod and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on cognitive aspects of mathematical problem solving has made great progress in recent years, but the relationship of affective factors to problem-solving performance has been a neglected research area. The purpose of Affect and Mathematical Problem Solving: A New Perspective is to show how the theories and methods of cognitive science can be extended to include the role of affect in mathematical problem solving. The book presents Mandler's theory of emotion and explores its implications for the learning and teaching of mathematical problem solving. Also, leading researchers from mathematics, education, and psychology report how they have integrated affect into their own cognitive research. The studies focus on metacognitive processes, aesthetic influences on expert problem solvers, teacher decision-making, technology and teaching problem solving, and beliefs about mathematics. The results suggest how emotional factors like anxiety, frustration, joy, and satisfaction can help or hinder performance in problem solving.
