Book Attitudes and Behaviour of Low income Households Towards the Management of Domestic Solid Waste in Tafelsig Mitchell s Plain

Download or read book Attitudes and Behaviour of Low income Households Towards the Management of Domestic Solid Waste in Tafelsig Mitchell s Plain written by Jules Nshimirimana and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid waste management in South Africa has been focussing on the technical issues of waste disposal with little attention paid to the social and economic aspects of households. It is important to find out the impact of the attitude and perception of households on solid waste management, especially in low-income areas to be able to deal with the deplorabe domestic solid waste management in such areas. The quantity of solid waste generated in low-income areas is often assumed to be less than the solid waste generated in high-income neighbourhoods. In most of the townships of low-income households in Cape Town, the residents live next to mountains of solid waste which is not the case in middle and high income areas. This clearly has a negative effect on the environment and human health. Tafelsig is one of the low-income Cape Flats townships where the open spaces and green areas are dumping areas. The small yard that people own is often unclean. The aim of the study was to examine how households residing in the low-income neighbourhood (Tafelsig, Mitchell's Plain) view domestic solid waste and its management. The study explored the perceptions, attitudes and behaviour of these households towards the production and management of sold waste. Issues relating to the degradation of their environment and to solid waste mismanagement were also examined.

Book The role of households in solid waste management in East Africa capital cities

Download or read book The role of households in solid waste management in East Africa capital cities written by Aisa Oberlin Solomon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Household solid waste management is a severe problem in East Africa capital cities. Domestic actors tend to be neglected in their role in solving the problem. This book develops a new conceptual framework for analyzing the role of households in solid waste management in East Africa's capital cities. This conceptual framework is derived from the theory of the Modernized Mixture Approach. By focusing on households in informal settlements in particular, domestic routines for handling wastes are analyzed for their technical and social dimensions. By elaborating upon the technical and social aspects of domestic solid wastes and the role of householders in producing and handling these wastes, this book adds to the scanty body of scientific knowledge of sustainable waste management by householders in East African countries. The knowledge generated with respect to technical and social dimensions can be used in the future by researchers and policy makers in SWM policies both in East Africa and comparable situations elsewhere in the world.

Book Relationship Between Personality Traits of the Urban Poor Concerning Solid Waste Management and Household Income and Education

Download or read book Relationship Between Personality Traits of the Urban Poor Concerning Solid Waste Management and Household Income and Education written by Md Wahid Murad and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the relationship between knowledge, attitude, and behaviour of the urban poor householders concerning solid waste management systems and monthly household income and education. To attain the objective, the study employed statistical techniques such as t-tests of equality of means, one-way ANOVA, x2 "likelihood ratio" test and simple descriptive statistics. The findings show that the urban poor communities with low income and education have been proven to behave in ways matching with and conducive to environment-friendly solid waste management, for instance, by practicing recycling and waste source reduction. This study also proves that the urban low-income communities generally have a very proactive role from a sound environmental management perspective, as they are the main recyclers and source-reducers of solid waste. The study suggests that policies should be formulated to focus on promoting knowledge, education, skills, and empowerment of the urban poor as means of promoting their living conditions.

Book excerpt: This dissertation was an exploration of how changing the waste system is a necessary part of achieving sustainable human systems and how transforming consumer attitudes towards waste is a vital piece of sustainable waste management. This research was also an exploration of the attitudes and beliefs that promote and prohibit waste reduction behaviors. The unsustainable character of current waste systems was explained and put into an historical context. This research focused on how household waste plays a role in waste systems and how the waste behaviors and attitudes of individuals play a role in moving from a linear system of waste disposal to a cyclical system of waste recovery. This dissertation argues for the need to have a deeper understanding of how to elicit changes in waste attitudes and behaviors. The results of a participatory action research project with a group of residents to reduce household solid waste in a rural U.S. town are presented. The results from this study indicated that by employing the methods used in this project, people can be motivated to not only change their behaviors to reduce waste, but to encourage others to adopt those behaviors. The term 'catalyzing stewardship' is used to describe how participants engaged others in waste reduction. This term connotes the sharing of ideas and practices without implying that the individuals took on a leadership role. Methods to reduce waste undertaken by individuals, organizations, and municipalities are discussed. This research has added to the dialogue about how to increase environmental stewardship behaviors, specifically those that involve waste reduction.

According to waste disposal statistics from Environment Protection Department, 9,547 tonnes of municipal solid waste were generated every day in Hong Kong in 2013. Food waste was the major composition in the MSW, accounting for 38% of MSW in 2013, whereas over 70% of food waste was generated from the residential sector. Since 2005, the government has introduced various schemes and policies with the objectives of waste reduction and development of sustainable waste management system. In this connection, changes in individual household attitudes and bebaviour to support the sustainable food waste management are detrimental to achieving the goal of waste reduction in Hong Kong. Therefore, this study will focus on examining the household attitudes and behaviour toward the sustainable food waste management in residential estates. Recommendations will be made on enhancing public involvement of residential sector in sustainable food waste management according to the findings of questionnaire survey. Book excerpt: This report outlines the findings of a two-week participatory design workshop undertaken by Architecture Sans Frontières-UK (ASF-UK) in partnership with Development Action Group (DAG) in Cape Town, South Africa, from April 7 to 17, 2015.The workshop explored a projective diagnosis of how various stakeholders could act to create opportunities for inner-city affordable housing, and the reasons why this was not currently happening. The district of Woodstock was the main focus as an area where the effects of gentrification have been particularly damaging, with extortionate rents and land evictions being fairly commonplace. The team of international participants, local experts and facilitators worked across four scales: Policy and Planning, Dwelling, Community and City, to unpack the complexities of the exclusion felt by the urban poor in Cape Town, and to start to build links towards collective action for change.

Book Improving Municipal Solid Waste Management in India

Download or read book Improving Municipal Solid Waste Management in India written by P U Asnani and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid Waste Management (SWM) is a matter of great concern in the urban areas of developing countries. The municipal authorities who are responsible for managing municipal solid waste are unable to discharge their obligations effectively because they lack the in-house capacity to handle the complexities of the process. It is heartening to see that the World Bank has prepared this book covering all important aspects of municipal SWM in great depth. The book covers very lucidly the present scenario of SWM in urban areas, the system deficiencies that exist, and the steps that need to be taken to correct SWM practices in compliance with Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000 ratified by the Government of India. The book shares examples of best practices adopted in various parts of the country and abroad, and very appropriately covers the institutional, financial, social, and legal aspects of solid waste management, which are essential for sustainability of the system. It provides a good insight on how to involve the community, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to help improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the service, and shows how contracting mechanisms can be used to involve the private sector in SWM services. This book will be a very useful tool for city managers and various stakeholders who deal with municipal solid waste management in the design and execution of appropriate and cost-effective systems.

Book Reconsidering Informality

Download or read book Reconsidering Informality written by Karen Tranberg Hansen and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together two bodies of research on urban Africa that have tended to be separate, studies of urban land use and housing and studies of work and livelihoods. Africa's future will be increasingly urban, and the inherited legal, institutional and financial arrangements for managing urban development are inadequate. Access to employment, shelter and services is precarious for most urban residents. The result is the phenomenal growth of the informal city. Extra-legal housing and unregistered economic activities proliferate and basic urban services are increasingly provided informally. Recent decades of neo-liberal political and economic reforms have increased social inequality across urban space. After an introductory chapter by the editors, the contributions are grouped into the following sections: - LOCALITY, PLACE, AND SPACE - ECONOMY, WORK, AND LIVELIHOODS - LAND, HOUSING, AND PLANNING The case studies are drawn from a diverse set of cities on the African continent. A central theme is how practices that from an official standpoint are illegal or extra-legal do not only work but are considered legitimate by the actors concerned. Another is how the informal city is not exclusively the domain of the poor, but also provides shelter and livelihoods for better-off segments of the urban population.

Book Informal Settlements

Download or read book Informal Settlements written by Marie Huchzermeyer and published by Juta and Company Ltd. This book was released on 2006 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal settlements are a shameful feature of poverty and inherited inequalities in South Africa. Defined in this book as 'settlements of the urban poor developed through the unauthorised occupation of land', they are regarded by many as unhealthy and overcrowded blights on the urban landscape 'squatter camps' in common parlance. Yet census data tell us that 16.4% of households across the country live in informal settlements, mostly in urban areas where an insecure foothold on the land enables these households to access the economic opportunities, social and economic networks and basic amenities that are essential to their survival.
