Book Initial VTOL Flight Control Design Criteria Development Discussion of Selected Handling Qualities Topics

Download or read book Initial VTOL Flight Control Design Criteria Development Discussion of Selected Handling Qualities Topics written by John Kroll (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report presents a series of discussions on selected topics related to the development of VTOL flying qualities criteria. The topics were chosen on the basis of their importance to flying qualities and the potential significance to the Air Force VTOL Integrated Flight Control System (VIFCS) program. The treatment given to the selected topics was aimed at identifying those areas that require further study and research within the scope of the VIFCS program. -- page iii.

Book Stability and Control of Airplanes and Helicopters

Download or read book Stability and Control of Airplanes and Helicopters written by Edward Seckel and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability and Control of Airplanes and Helicopters deals with aircraft flying qualities that determine the stability and control of airplanes and helicopters. It includes problems based on real aircraft, selected to represent the gamut from simple to complicated, and from conventional utility designs to futuristic research types. Many of these problems involve comparison of theory and experiment to demonstrate their mutual relationship. Comprised of 25 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the aerodynamics of the component parts related to the lift and moment characteristics of an airplane, including wings and associated accessories; bodies such as fuselages, nacelles, and tip tanks; and control surfaces. The reader is then introduced to some mathematical techniques for linear differential equations; steady flight at different speeds; and stick force and control-free stability. Subsequent chapters focus on flaps and high-lift devices; power and compressibility effects; and the manner in which the aircraft responds to the application of control. Aeroelasticity and longitudinal equations of motion are also examined. This monograph is intended for undergraduate and graduate students taking modern engineering courses.

Book A Study of Conventional Airplane Handling Qualities Requirements

Download or read book A Study of Conventional Airplane Handling Qualities Requirements written by I. L. Ashkenas and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. Regulation of the bank angle to maintain heading is a close-loop tracking task in which the pilot applies aileron control as a function of observed bank angle error. For large heading changes, the steady-state bank angle consistent with available or desired load factor is attained in an open-loop fashion; it is then regulated in a closed-loop fashion throughout the remainder of the turn. For the transient entry and exit from the turn, the pilot is not concerned with bank angle per se, but rather with attaining a mentally commanded bank angle with tolerable accuracy in a reasonable time, and with an easily learned and comfortable program of aileron movements.

Book Effects of Gyroscopic Cross Coupling Between Pitch and Yaw on the Handling Qualities of VTOL Aircraft

Download or read book Effects of Gyroscopic Cross Coupling Between Pitch and Yaw on the Handling Qualities of VTOL Aircraft written by John F. Garren and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gyroscopic cross coupling between pitch and yaw was simulated with a variable-stability helicopter while hovering in a yawing maneuver to ascertain the effect of cross coupling on handling qualities. Pilot ratings of the controllability of cross coupling were obtained for various combinations of longitudinal control power, angular velocity about the yaw axis, and simulated engine angular momentum. A theoretical investigation, supplemented by simulator data, was undertaken to determine the effect of longitudinal damping on the coupling controllability. Also, a comparison was made between flight and simulator data. The results indicated that for an aircraft with otherwise satisfactory longitudinal handling qualities, the level of cross coupling is satisfactory when less than 30 percent of the available longitudinal control will trim out the largest gyroscopic coupling moment which might be encountered. Increased longitudinal damping resulted in a significant increase in the controllability of pitch-yaw gyroscopic cross coupling.

Book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control

Download or read book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.
