Download or read book The Scientific Attitude written by Frederick Grinnell and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1992-03-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SCIENTIFIC ATTITUDE presents a systematic account of the cognitive and social features of science. Written by an experimental biologist actively engaged in research, the work is unique in its attempt to understand science in terms of day-to-day practice. The book goes beyond the traditional description of science that focuses on method and logic to characterize the scientific attitude as a way of looking at the world. Professor Grinnell uses examples from biomedical research to describe science at three interdependent levels. At the first level, the individual scientist makes observations, formulates hypotheses, and does experiments. The scientist's thought style determines what can be seen and what it will appear to mean. At the second level, scientists participate in social institutions such as graduate programs, research groups, journal editorial boards, and grant review panels. Each of these institutions tries to promote its own distinctive collective thought style. Finally, at the third level, scientists participate in the world of everyday life beyond science, a world that continuously influences and is influenced by the activities and discoveries of science.

Book A flexible attitude control system for three axis stabilized nanosatellites

Download or read book A flexible attitude control system for three axis stabilized nanosatellites written by Gordon, Karsten and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates a new concept for the flexible design and verification of an ADCS for a nanosatellite platform. In order to investigate guidelines for the design of a flexible ADCS, observations of the satellite market and missions are recorded. Following these observations, the author formulates design criteria which serve as a reference for the conceptual design of the flexible ADCS. The research of the thesis was carried out during the development of TU Berlin's nanosatellite platform TUBiX20 and its first two missions, TechnoSat and TUBIN. TUBiX20 targets modularity, reuse and dependability as main design goals. Based on the analysis of design criteria for a flexible ADCS, these key design considerations for the TUBiX20 platform were continued for the investigations carried out in this thesis. The resulting concept implements the ADCS as a distributed system of devices complemented by a hardware-independent core application for state determination and control. Drawing on the technique of component-based software engineering, the system is partitioned into self-contained modules which implement unified interfaces. These interfaces specify the state quantity of an input or output but also its unit and coordinate system, complemented by a mathematical symbol for unambiguous documentation. The design and verification process for the TUBiX20 ADCS was also elaborated during the course of this research. The approach targets the gradual development of the subsystem from a purely virtual satellite within a closed-loop simulation to the verification of the fully integrated system on an air-bearing testbed. Finally, the concurrent realization of the investigated concept within the TechnoSat and TUBIN missions is discussed. Starting with the individual ADCS requirements, the scalability of the approach is demonstrated in three stages: from a coarse, but cost- and energy-efficient configuration to realize a technology demonstration mission with moderate requirements (TechnoSat) to a high-performance configuration to support Earth observation missions (TUBIN).

Book Attitude Strength

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard E. Petty
  • Publisher : Psychology Press
  • Release : 2014-01-14
  • ISBN : 1317782356
  • Pages : 583 pages

Download or read book Attitude Strength written by Richard E. Petty and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social psychologists have long recognized the possibility that attitudes might differ from one another in terms of their strength, but only recently had the profound implications of this view been explored. Yet because investigators in the area were pursuing interesting but independent programs of research exploring different aspects of strength, there was little articulation of assumptions underlying the work, and little effort to establish a common research agenda. The goals of this book are to highlight these assumptions, to review the discoveries this work has produced, and to suggest directions for future work in the area. The chapter authors include individuals who have made significant contributions to the published literature and represent a diversity of perspectives on the topic. In addition to providing an overview of the broad area of attitude strength, particular chapters deal in depth with specific features of attitudes related to strength and integrate the diverse bodies of relevant theory and empirical evidence. The book will be of interest to graduate students initiating work on attitudes as well as to longstanding scholars in the field. Because of the many potential directions for application of work on attitude strength to amelioration of social problems, the book will be valuable to scholars in various applied disciplines such as political science, marketing, sociology, public opinion, and others studying attitudinal phenomena.

It is the first known book to provide detailed derivations and explanations of state attitude determination and gives readers real-world examples from actual working spacecraft missions. The subject matter is chosen to fill the void of existing textbooks and treatises, especially in state and dynamics attitude determination. MATLAB code of all examples will be provided through an external website.

Book Determinants of Private Label Attitude

Download or read book Determinants of Private Label Attitude written by Stefanie Weiß and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various psychographic traits that most directly influence consumers’ private label attitudes are the focal point of Stefanie Weiss’ investigation. The author develops a comprehensive profile of psychographic predictors of attitude and identifies ways of translating these insights into managerial practice. Her conclusions thereby strongly contribute to understanding and describing purchasers of private labels and can be meaningfully applied to the management areas of brand positioning and market segmentation. The hypothesized relationships between consumers’ private label attitude and various psychographic traits are tested on a sample of German and Austrian consumers using an online questionnaire. Their response data are then analyzed using the multiple regression technique.

Book Attitude Research in Science Education

Download or read book Attitude Research in Science Education written by Dr. Issa M. Saleh and published by IAP. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research into how students’ attitudes affect their learning of science related subjects has been one of the core areas of interest by science educators. The development in science education records various attempts in measuring attitudes and determining the correlations between behavior, achievements, career aspirations, gender identity and cultural inclination. Some researchers noted that attitudes can be learned and teachers can encourage students to like science subjects through persuasion. But some view that attitude is situated in context and has much to do with upbringing and environment. The critical role of attitude is well recognized in advancing science education, in particular designing curriculum and choosing powerful pedagogies and nurturing students. Since Noll’s (1935) seminal work on measuring the scientific attitudes, a steady stream of research papers describing the development and validation of scales have appeared in scholarly publications. Despite these efforts, the progress in this area has been stagnated by limited understanding of the conception of attitude, dimensionality and inability to determine the multitude of variables that made up such concept. This book makes an attempt to take stock and critically examine classical views on science attitudes and explore contemporary attempts in measuring science-related attitudes. The chapters in this book are a reflection of researchers who work tirelessly in promoting science education and highlight the current trends and future scenarios in attitude measurement.

Book Fault Tolerant Attitude Estimation for Small Satellites

Download or read book Fault Tolerant Attitude Estimation for Small Satellites written by Chingiz Hajiyev and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small satellites use commercial off-the-shelf sensors and actuators for attitude determination and control (ADC) to reduce the cost. These sensors and actuators are usually not as robust as the available, more expensive, space-proven equipment. As a result, the ADC system of small satellites is more vulnerable to any fault compared to a system for larger competitors. This book aims to present useful solutions for fault tolerance in ADC systems of small satellites. The contents of the book can be divided into two categories: fault tolerant attitude filtering algorithms for small satellites and sensor calibration methods to compensate the sensor errors. MATLAB® will be used to demonstrate simulations. Presents fault tolerant attitude estimation algorithms for small satellites with an emphasis on algorithms’ practicability and applicability Incorporates fundamental knowledge about the attitude determination methods at large Discusses comprehensive information about attitude sensors for small satellites Reviews calibration algorithms for small satellite magnetometers with simulated examples Supports theory with MATLAB simulation results which can be easily understood by individuals without a comprehensive background in this field Covers up-to-date discussions for small satellite attitude systems design Dr. Chingiz Hajiyev is a professor at the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Istanbul Technical University (Istanbul, Turkey). Dr. Halil Ersin Soken is an assistant professor at the Aerospace Engineering Department, Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey).
