Book excerpt: Published in 1965, this biography of Atticus Green Haygood (1839–1896) reveals a man whose personal faith led him to become one of the foremost southern advocates of liberal racial policies. Born in rural northeast Georgia, Haygood attended Emory College at Oxford and went on to lead a distinguished career in the Methodist church, reforming church government, writing tracts on missionary work, and eventually serving as Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Haygood received national recognition for his work as an agent for the Slater Fund, an organization dedicated to supporting education for blacks, and for his controversial book Our Brother in Black, which outlined his views on racial issues. From 1875 to 1884 he served as president of Emory College where he continued his efforts of social reform.

Slater Fund at a meeting of the Trustees held on October 5, 1882, the year in which the Fund was established. He continued to serve in this capacity until he accepted the office of Bishop in 1890. At the fourteenth meeting of the Board held October 29, 1890, his resignation was accepted, and Dr. J. L. M. Curry was elected to fill the position. Dr. Haygood was not only a great preacher and a wise administrator, he was also a great and wise statesman. The Trustees of the John F. Slater Fund were most fortunate in being able to secure the services of such a man in the beginning of their important work. It seems fitting that among the occasional papers published by the Board there should appear a sketch of Dr. Haygood's life, with brief extracts from his speeches and writings. As time goes on, his broad vision, his liberal spirit, his clear thought, his beneficent influence, will more and more be understood and realized. If it could be demonstrably proved that there never existed such a person as Jesus, Christianity, as a living force, would cease from the earth. There would indeed be a history, a literature that would interest people according to their tastes; but there would be no heart-changing, world-up-lifting system of vital and vitalizing truths and corresponding duties, binding upon the conscience of every human being and inspiring hope in every breast. In the discussions we are about to enter nothing will be assumed except what is too obvious to question. It will not be assumed that the little books called "gospels" were inspired at all.
