Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much-maligned feature of ancient and medieval political thought is its tendency to appeal to nature to establish norms for human communities. From Aristotle's claim that humans are "political animals" to Aquinas' invocation of "natural law," it may seem that pre-modern philosophers were all too ready to assume that whatever is natural is good, and that just political arrangements must somehow be natural. The papers in this collection show that this assumption is, at best, too crude. From very early, for instance in the ancient sophists' contrast between nomos and physis, there was recognition that political arrangements may be precisely artificial, not natural, and it may be questioned whether even such supposed naturalists as Aristotle in fact adopt the quick inference from "natural" to "good." The papers in this volume trace the complex interrelations between nature and such concepts as law, legitimacy, and justice, covering a wide historical range stretching from Plato and the Sophists to Aristotle, Hellenistic philosophy, Cicero, the Neoplatonists Plotinus and Porphyry, ancient Christian thinkers, and philosophers of both the Islamic and Christian Middle Ages.

This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy Perhaps no period in civilization has ever been so rich in specula tive, boldness and penetrating cosmic insight __as the great per_iod of Greek philosophy. It appears that the Greeks were naturally curious and inquisitive about the nature of life and the structure of the uni verse; consequently philosophers like Democritus, Aristotle, and Plato observed all aspects of existence and were occupied with problems which not merely dealt with ethical ideals but also gave a synthesis of human knowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Adamson presents a lively introduction to six hundred years of European philosophy, from the beginning of the ninth century to the end of the fourteenth century. The medieval period is one of the richest in the history of philosophy, yet one of the least widely known. Adamson introduces us to some of the greatest thinkers of the Western intellectual tradition, including Peter Abelard, Anselm of Canterbury, Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, and Roger Bacon. And the medieval period was notable for the emergence of great women thinkers, including Hildegard of Bingen, Marguerite Porete, and Julian of Norwich. Original ideas and arguments were developed in every branch of philosophy during this period - not just philosophy of religion and theology, but metaphysics, philosophy of logic and language, moral and political theory, psychology, and the foundations of mathematics and natural science.

Book The Cambridge History of Later Medieval Philosophy

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Later Medieval Philosophy written by Norman Kretzmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-03-11 with total page 1049 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1982 book is a history of the great age of scholastism from Abelard to the rejection of Aristotelianism in the Renaissance, combining the highest standards of medieval scholarship with a respect for the interests and insights of contemporary philosophers, particularly those working in the analytic tradition. The volume follows on chronologically from The Cambridge History of Later Greek and Early Medieval Philosophy, though it does not continue the histories of Greek and Islamic philosophy but concentrates on the Latin Christian West. Unlike other histories of medieval philosophy that divide the subject matter by individual thinkers, it emphasises the parts of more historical and theological interest. This volume is organised by those topics in which recent philosophy has made the greatest progress.
