Book Rereading Travellers to the East

Download or read book Rereading Travellers to the East written by Beatrice Falcucci and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rereading Travellers to the East aim to offer a new perspective on travel literature, the question of nation-building and the history of orientalism. Rereading Travellers focuses on the rereadings to which early modern travel literature about Asia has been subjected by different actors involved in the political, economic, cultural and intellectual life of post-unification Italy. The authors highlight how this literature has been reinterpreted and reused for political and ideological purposes in the context of the formation and reformation of collective identities, from the Risorgimento to the Fascist regime and the early republic. By showing the potential of the notion of rereading, the volume outlines a history of the political and cultural legacy of travel literature which goes well beyond Italy.

Book Early English Travellers in India

Download or read book Early English Travellers in India written by Ram Chandra Prasad and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1980 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These studies in Elizabethan and Jacobean travel literature, informed by a scholarly and sympathetic but, very properly, unsentimental approach to ten significant English travellers in India between 1579 and 1630, throw considerable light on the India of the great Mughals and reveal the many strands which are interwoven into the ties that have bound and still, in many ways, bind the great and ancient civilisations of the Indian sub-continent with the smaller and shorter civilisations of the British Isles. Professor Ram Chandra Prasad combines the skills and resources of the historian, the literary critic and the student of comparative literature and languages to demonstrate what we may learn of these two countries from the often idiosyncratic but always rich prose of Englishmen abroad in the ages of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. Professor Prasad has chosen for study Thomas Stephens, Ralph Fitch, John Mildenhall, William Hawkins, Thomas Roe, Thomas Coryat, William Finch, Nicholas Withington, Edward Terry, and Henry Lord. He makes just enough reference to non-English travellers, such as Manucci, to keep his readers in the general picture of western exploration , while at the same time he concentrates on his chosen field. The author's practice of quoting long extracts in the original language has a twofold advantage: it makes his narrative more vivid, and it facilitates the determination of what one traveller owes to another. This new, completely revised edition of Early English Travellers in India will continue to fill a long-felt gap in Indo-Anglian literature and it will be greeted as an important achievement by the scholar and the general reader alike.

Book The Qur an s Reformation of Judaism and Christianity

Download or read book The Qur an s Reformation of Judaism and Christianity written by Holger M. Zellentin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the relationship between the Qur’an and the Jewish and Christian traditions, considering aspects of continuity and reform. The chapters examine the Qur’an’s retelling of biblical narratives, as well as its reaction to a wide array of topics that mark Late Antique religious discourse, including eschatology and ritual purity, prophetology and paganism, and heresiology and Christology. Twelve emerging and established scholars explore the many ways in which the Qur’an updates, transforms, and challenges religious practice, beliefs, and narratives that Late Antique Jews and Christians had developed in dialogue with the Bible. The volume establishes the Qur’an’s often unique perspective alongside its surprising continuity with Judaism and Christianity. Chapters focus on individual suras and on intra-Qur’anic parallels, on the Qur’an’s relationship to pre-Islamic Arabian culture, on its intertextuality and its literary intricacy, and on its legal and moral framework. It illustrates a move away from the problematic paradigm of cultural influence and instead emphasizes the Qur’an’s attempt to reform the religious landscape of its time. The Qur'an's Reformation of Judaism and Christianity offers new insight into the Islamic Scripture as a whole and into recent methodological developments, providing a compelling snapshot of the burgeoning field of Qur’anic studies. It is a key resource for students and scholars interested in religion, Islam, and Middle Eastern Studies.
