The academic achievement or academic performance is measured by the exam score of the students. Structured questionnaires have been prepared which provide a clear guide to extract the exact information from the desired source to conduct to study smoothly and effectively. The findings of this study explored that class attendance has a very strong relationship with academic performance of the student. The strong relationship between variables is claimed by the correlation between class attendance and academic performance of the students which is correlation 0.7686. Since, based on the findings of this study, it is concluded that class attendance has significant impact over academic performance so that it is recommended that compulsory class attendance and scholarship for full attendance are needed to be effectively implemented. This important study has been conducted in many other developed, developing and underdeveloped countries so that it becomes crucial to identify the effect of class attendance on the academic performance of students in Bangladesh.

Book excerpt: Using unique survey data on rural secondary school children, this paper evaluates the relative quality of Islamic secondary schools (i.e. madrasahs) in Bangladesh. Students attending registered madrasahs fare worse in maths and English than students attending non-madrasah schools. However, failure to account for non-random sorting over-estimates the negative influence of madrasahs on student achievement. Evidence on the magnitude of this bias is presented. Once selection effect is taken into account, madrasah disadvantage in English is small while that in maths becomes insignificant. Given the overall low level of achievement, this suggests that madrasah students perform just as poorly as those from non-madrasah schools in rural Bangladesh.

Students that graduate from public junior secondary schools, controlling for a variety of other characteristics, score 0.15 to 0.3 standard deviations higher on the national exit exam than comparable privately schooled peers. This finding is robust to OLS, fixed-effects, and instrumental variable estimation strategies. Students attending Muslim private schools, including Madrassahs, fare no worse on average than students attending secular private schools. The results provide indirect evidence that higher quality inputs at public junior secondary schools promote higher test scores. "--Cover verso.

Book excerpt: There is a problem in large, suburban high schools that relates to reduced degrees of student success. This problem occurred due to poor student attendance which led to low academic achievement, high rates of student discipline, and decreased graduation rates. This problem also led to poor scores on state benchmark tests that can negatively impact district accreditation and cause a loss of state and federal funding. This study addressed the association between student attendance to three specific indicators of students' success. A quantitative correlational methodology was used to explain the degree of association between the students' attendance and the three outcome variables of academic achievement measured by grade point average (GPA), student discipline as measured by the number of office referrals, and graduation rates at a large, suburban hgih school in the Midwest. Archived data from a single school year are used in the research. As student attendance rates increased, the mean grade point average increased and mean discipline referral rates decreased. The results showed the impact in graduation rate was not significant. The results of this study have corroborated the previous research and literature on the topic of attendance on student success. The research found a significant correlation between attendance and student success. The data and conclusions can be used to advocate for programs and services and for the allocation of resources for educational programming; particularly programs that support increased student attendance, improved academic achievement, decreased discipline incidents, and enhanced rate of graduation.

Book excerpt: In 2014, the Utah State Legislature passed an amendment for Section 53A-11-102 of the Utah Code regarding the way public school student absences are treated in the state of Utah. The law effectively states that parents may excuse any number of absences without restriction for family events or visits to healthcare providers during the school year, which replaced the previous system requiring a set number of required days present in the classroom (State System of Public Education, 2014). With this change in the law, it is possible that students are now missing more days of school than they were under previous seat-time requirements. The law also provides that students have the opportunity to make up all work that is missed, which raises the question of whether or not a change in seat-time affects actual Academic Learning Time, or the time that students spend in an actual classroom working on meaningful learning activities.

Book excerpt: This document presents findings of a 9-month study conducted by the Scottish Council for Research in Education (SCRE) that explores: the statistical relationships among attendance, truancy, and student performance in examinations; the impact of truancy on students, teachers, and teaching; and factors of truancy in seven primary and seven secondary schools in two local authority areas. Data were gathered through interviews with 7 primary and 7 secondary headteachers, 14 primary teachers, and 28 secondary teachers; questionnaires administered to 299 primary students and 76 secondary students; followup interviews with 8 secondary students; telephone interviews with 18 parents; and analysis of attendance records and grade reports. In every school but one, pupil absences were more likely to be "explained" than "unexplained." During the first two terms of 1993-94 at least 89 percent of pupils in each school registered some explained absence. As the level of absence increased among fourth-year secondary students, the level of grade award decreased; however, there was considerable variation among schools. Explained absence and unexplained absence had comparable effects on attainment. Secondary-school truants reported that they skipped school because they were bored with school and would rather be earning money at work.
