Book excerpt: He used to scoff at fate... A long time ago, he was ruler among gods. Fallen, he was exiled, sent to oversee the underworld. Until a mage on Earth caught his interest, and their friendship got him involved with the one he was always meant to protect - the Lady of the Lake. He used to scoff at love.... With Vivienne safe in Sébastien's embrace, Atrox sheds the last of his protector skin, and says goodbye to his alter, Alistair, for good. Something else has drawn his attention, and it's got nothing to do with keeping watch from afar. Rather, it's got everything to do with getting closer than ever before. ...until he falls in the most final trap of all. Atrox's last adventure leads him to the kingdom of the Fae, as he seeks the one who stole his heart - the Fae heiress, Catriona. But her aging father is not keen on letting one of his worst enemies win over his daughter. Without mercy, he sets up a trap: seven labours, each harder than the next. If Atrox wins them all, he can plead his case to Catriona herself. And if he loses...he faces death itself. *A story of the Avalon Chronicles universe with quests, love and magic. Want to find out how Alistair fares after his Avalon journey? This book reveals it all! Can be read as a standalone fantasy.*

Edited by world-renowned experts in the field, this comprehensive work provides detailed information on all known proteolytic enzymes to date. This two-volume set unveils new developments on proteolytic enzymes which are being investigatedin pharmaceutical research for such diseases as HIV, Hepatitis C, and the common cold. Volume I covers aspartic and metallo petidases while Volume II examines peptidases of cysteine, serine, threonine and unknown catalytic type. A CD-ROM accompanies the book containing fully searchable text, specialised scissile bond searches, 3-D color structures and much more. The only comprehensive book on proteolytic enzymes Includes 671 chapters, each written by experts in their field, on proteolytic enzymes from all groups of living organisms and the viruses, including those that are currently major targets of pharmaceutical research Accompanying CD-ROM provides fully searchable text, 2D structures of peptidases in color and links directly to PubMed and MEROPS databases Each chapter describes in detail the enzyme name, its history, activity and specificity, structural chemistry, preparation, biological aspects and distinguishing features Over 1000 peptidases included

Book Rock Bone and Ruin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adrian Currie
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2024-05-21
  • ISBN : 0262552035
  • Pages : 383 pages

Download or read book Rock Bone and Ruin written by Adrian Currie and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument that we should be optimistic about the capacity of “methodologically omnivorous” geologists, paleontologists, and archaeologists to uncover truths about the deep past. The “historical sciences”—geology, paleontology, and archaeology—have made extraordinary progress in advancing our understanding of the deep past. How has this been possible, given that the evidence they have to work with offers mere traces of the past? In Rock, Bone, and Ruin, Adrian Currie explains that these scientists are “methodological omnivores,” with a variety of strategies and techniques at their disposal, and that this gives us every reason to be optimistic about their capacity to uncover truths about prehistory. Creative and opportunistic paleontologists, for example, discovered and described a new species of prehistoric duck-billed platypus from a single fossilized tooth. Examining the complex reasoning processes of historical science, Currie also considers philosophical and scientific reflection on the relationship between past and present, the nature of evidence, contingency, and scientific progress. Currie draws on varied examples from across the historical sciences, from Mayan ritual sacrifice to giant Mesozoic fleas to Mars's mysterious watery past, to develop an account of the nature of, and resources available to, historical science. He presents two major case studies: the emerging explanation of sauropod size, and the “snowball earth” hypothesis that accounts for signs of glaciation in Neoproterozoic tropics. He develops the Ripple Model of Evidence to analyze “unlucky circumstances” in scientific investigation; examines and refutes arguments for pessimism about the capacity of the historical sciences, defending the role of analogy and arguing that simulations have an experiment-like function. Currie argues for a creative, open-ended approach, “empirically grounded” speculation.

Book Carnivoran Evolution

  • Author : Anjali Goswami
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2010-07-29
  • ISBN : 1139488538
  • Pages : pages

Download or read book Carnivoran Evolution written by Anjali Goswami and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Members of the mammalian clade Carnivora have invaded nearly every continent and ocean, evolving into bamboo-eating pandas, clam-eating walruses and of course, flesh-eating sabre-toothed cats. With this ecological, morphological and taxonomic diversity and a fossil record spanning over sixty million years, Carnivora has proven to be a model clade for addressing questions of broad evolutionary significance. This volume brings together top international scientists with contributions that focus on current advances in our understanding of carnivoran relationships, ecomorphology and macroevolutionary patterns. Topics range from the palaeoecology of the earliest fossil carnivorans to the influences of competition and constraint on diversity and biogeographic distributions. Several studies address ecomorphological convergences among carnivorans and other mammals with morphometric and Finite Element analyses, while others consider how new molecular and palaeontological data have changed our understanding of carnivoran phylogeny. Combined, these studies also illustrate the diverse suite of approaches and questions in evolutionary biology and palaeontology.
