Download or read book Estuarine Research Monitoring and Resource Protection written by Michael J. Kennish and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-25 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing growth of human populations within US coastal regions continues to increase habitat loss, eutrophication, organic loading, overfishing, and other anthropogenic stressors in estuarine waters. The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) is a federally funded initiative that addresses these critical estuarine problems and coastal resource issues at 25 sites in 21 states. Now estuarine and watershed scientists, resource managers, community planners, and other professionals dealing with coastal zone issues have an expert resource describing the NERRS program, organization, goals, and management strategy. Estuarine Research, Monitoring, and Restoration first defines the components and technical aspects of the NERRS program, then provides valuable insight into the program through the presentation of six case studies of NERRS sites. This book examines estuarine problems including degraded water quality, reduction of biodiversity, and problematic invasive species, then analyzes the human impacts affecting estuaries. The comprehensive analysis of the six estuarine reserve locations characterizes each region's physical, chemical, and biological conditions from the perspective of the NERRS program. These case studies include a cross section of sites from three coasts, each study emphasizing the importance of unified efforts of government and citizens to successfully maintain the ecology of these critical areas.

Download or read book Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin written by F. di Castri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-07-31 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the massive change in the area of distribution of many world biota across classical biogeographical realms, and of the drastic restructuring of the biotic components of numerous ecosystems, the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) decided at its general Assembly in Ottawa, Canada, in 1982 to launch a project on the 'Ecology of Biological Invasions'. Several regional meetings were subsequently organized within the framework of SCOPE, in order to single out the peculiarities of the invasions that took place in each region, the behaviour of their invasive species and the invasibility of their ecosystems. Most noteworthy among such workshops were one in Australia in August 1984, one concerning North America and Hawaii in October 1984, and one dealing with southern Africa in November 1985. A leitmotiv of these workshops was that most of the invasive species to those regions were emanating from Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, inadvertently or intentionally introduced by man. It was therefore considered as a timely endeavour to organize the next regional meeting in relation to this region. The workshop on 'Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin' was held in Montpellier, France, 21 to 23 May 1986, thanks to the financial support of SCOPE and of the A.W. Mellon Foundation, and the logistic facilities of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (C.N .R.S.).

This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 1970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the Fynbos biome, Renosterveld is one of the world’s most threatened vegetation types, with just 5% of its original extent remaining. Focusing specifically on the Renosterveld of the Overberg region in the Western Cape, this field guide is the first of its kind to cover this highly endangered ecosystem, characterised by nutrient-rich soil which has been exploited for agriculture. An in-depth introduction sets the scene, defining what Renosterveld is and giving some historical background to the ecology of the area. The plants section follows, featuring over 980 plant species from the common and ‘showy’ to the weird, obscure and often-overlooked. A shorter section of 140 animal species showcases the diversity of creatures found here despite severe habitat loss and fragmentation. Additional features include a glossary with supporting illustrations, guidelines for landowners and farmers, and a comprehensive index. Field Guide to Renosterveld of the Overberg promises to be an enduring record of this unique and severely threatened ecosystem. It will be a vital addition to any nature lover’s bookshelf. Sales points: Comprehensive coverage of Renosterveld species, identification at a glance, full-colour photographs of all species described, expert author team.
