Book Natural Regeneration in Ponderosa Pine Forests of Western Montana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Natural Regeneration in Ponderosa Pine Forests of Western Montana Classic Reprint written by Raymond C. Shearer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Regeneration in Ponderosa Pine Forests of Western Montana Following harvest cutting, natural regeneration of ponderosa pine (pinus ponderosa Laws.) in western Montana usually is uncertain. Therefore, forest managers frequently rely on planting to promptly regenerate ponderosa pine and prevent future gaps in volume production. When the forester decides to restock an area by natural regeneration, he must effectively manipulate the factors under his control that influence seedling establishment. Good ponderosa pine seed crops occur at irregular intervals (usda Forest Service thus, timing of site preparation to coincide with seed production is a critical requirement for successful natural regeneration. Once cones are initiated, it is important to understand the factors influencing their survival. In addition, stimula tion of cone production by girdling or release of seed trees would be a useful tool if ponderosa pine responds to either of these treatments. Even when a sufficient seed crop is produced, the success of natural regeneration is further influenced by: (l) dissemination to a favorable seedbed; (2) seed loss to biotic agents; (3) germination of the remaining seed; and (4) survival of germinated seedlings. Book Management of Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest as Developed by Research and Experimental Practice Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management of Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest as Developed by Research and Experimental Practice Ponderosa pine, from the very beginning of the conservation movement, has figured as a leading timber species. In 1908 G. A. Pearson, a year out of forest school, was sent to Arizona to study natural regeneration of this tree, then called Western yellow pine. Commercial logging was in full swing on both private and public lands. In the national forests, despite measures that seemed adequate for natural reforestation, seedlings started sparingly after cutting. To provide information on natural regeneration as well as on other phases of ponderosa pine management, the Forest Service established the Fort Valley Forest Experiment Station in 1909. The research field covered Arizona and New Mexico, but work was concentrated largely in what is now the Fort Valley Experimental Forest, a branch of the Southwestern Forest and Range Experiment Station. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thinning Ponderosa Pine in the Southwest The true value of a shortened rotation has not been appreciated heretofore. The fact that total cubic - volume growth seldom increases during the first years following thinning has led to the erroneous conclusion that thinning doesn't pay. The potential long - term gain has been discounted or overlooked entirely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Red Rot of Ponderosa Pine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Red Rot of Ponderosa Pine Classic Reprint written by Stuart R. Andrews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Rot of Ponderosa Pine Long (25, 26) intensified his attack on the red rot problem in 1914. The results of his work, mainly on timber-sale areas in the Santa Fe National Forest of New Mexico, seemed to indicate that the decay was of minor consequence in blackjacks. In 1935 Pearson and Marsh (40) pointed out that the high percentage of cull from rot in ponderosa pine could be attributed to the general overmaturity of the forests, and that in future generations the percentage of heart-rot should decrease because few trees would attain an age of more than 200 years before cutting. At the same time, however, these authors cautioned that second-growth stands might be more subject to attack by decay fungi than old growth because of their more limby character. Book Growth of Immature Stands of Ponderosa Pine in the Black Hills Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of Immature Stands of Ponderosa Pine in the Black Hills Combinations of the variables sampled can be determined by noting the locations of the entries in tables 4 to 9 (see pages 8 to Each plot was carefully checked for uniformity of density, age, and site index. None of the plots had been thinned or otherwise disturbed during the 20-year period preceding measurement. A complete inventory was made on each plot, and data were obtained for computing the past stand. All trees were bored to determine radial growth at breast height for the past 10 and 20 years. Heights were measured on a sample of the trees and past height growth was determined by boring. The site index of each plot was computed from soil and topography (myers and Van Deusen, 1960b)to avoid errors due to the effect of stand density on tree height. Average age of the main stand on each plot was determined; occasional small invaders in stands of low density were omitted. Dead trees were measured and classed as having died 0-10, 11-20, or 21] years ago. Dead trees on permanent plots and in stands thinned at known dates were used as guides in estimating time of death.
