Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atoms of Empire "What on earth does the Chief have an animal like this Padgett to dine in Government House for?" asked Dayton-Philipps, querulously. "I expected to rough it, of course, when I came out here to the Coast, because they promised us active service, but hang me if ever I expected to rough it at the Governor's dinner-table with a missionary-thing like that. Why, the fellow hadn't got an aitch to his name; he stoked with his knife all the time; and when he got a fresh stock of perspiration on his forehead - O my aunt! he was too awful for anything." Forbes, the Colonial Secretary, fanned himself in his long-sleeved Madeira chair, and suggested lazily that Dayton-Philipps had been taken out of lavender too soon, and sent out into the warm, wide world too early. "We're a primitive people, we Coasters," said Forbes. "If a man has a white skin and a dress coat, we ask him to dinner. You re too fastidious." "Rot!" said Dayton-Philipps. "And, besides, the Padgett person hadn't a dress coat." "Oh, of course, I was speaking figuratively. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The wandering Englishman, the atom of empire, at sundry ends of the earth is not always good company in the flesh, but in Mr. Cutcliffe Hyne's stories he is good company. For the reader is not in the position of the "native"; he is, on the contrary, elected of the company of proper Britons and talked to as an equal. Those who try this book will have no sharp regrets.

Book The Northward Course of Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Northward Course of Empire Classic Reprint written by Vilhjalmur Stefansson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Northward Course of Empire The idea of this book is doubtless old, though it came to me only about 1912. Perhaps it was old to the Medes and Persians. It may even have been an ancient revamping of it that led Solomon to remark that there is nothing new under the sun. In another sense the idea is so new that the history of it can be given briefly. The winter of 1918-1919 representatives of chambers of commerce of various European countries were touring the United States. A dinner was given them in New York and at this I was called upon to make a five-minute talk. One of the sponsors of the dinner was Dr. Albert Shaw, the editor of the Review of Reviews. He said to me that the idea of my talk was new. When I reminded him of Solomon's well-known saying, he replied that at any rate it was new enough to make a suitable article for his magazine. He asked me to write the article and I said I would. Ideas, like many other things, have a tendency to expand, and in the writing my theme grew beyond the limits of the Review of Reviews, for they seldom print an article of more than twenty-five hundred words and I found I had ten thousand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions of Empire Mr. Principal, Ladies, and Gentlemen, this is a pleasant stage in life for many reasons. I had hoped, indeed, that to-day we should have been graced by the presence of our honored and venerated Chancellor, one of the oldest and kindest of my friends, but domestic anxiety at the last moment kept him away. It is rare, I believe, that a Chancellor comes to preside over a Rector's address, - there is, perhaps, some fear of a violent conflict of jurisdiction, - but I should have been all the more honored and pleased by his presence, for I should always be pleased to find him by my side at any period of my life, or in any capacity, as he is a noble and genial specimen of the best type of a Scottish gentleman. Long may he occupy his illustrious chair. And then, on the other hand, there are my young constituents; not merely those who voted for me, but those who voted against me, as well as those who from their unlucky juniority had not the opportunity of doing either. So I stand before you to-day with much gratitude and affection. I have only known in my life two sorts of constituents, the municipal and the academical. Both have been kind to me. Neither has ever rejected me. And I am proud to come and thank you for the great majority by which you elected me last autumn. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celestial Empires Not scientific to mm up science and religion in the same book Then God himself is unsci entific, for he has so largely and legibly written himself into that Book of Nature that contains all the sciences that even the heathen are without excuse for not reading his eternal power and god head in the things that are made. Is it scientific to attack religion from the side of science, and unscientific to defend it from the same side? Is it sc1entific to illustrate one science by another, as is daily done without rebuke, and unscientific to illustrate that supreme science which we call relrgron by that other science which we call as tronomy? Is it scientific to notice the gigantic tracks of birds in the rocks of the Connecticut valley, and unscientific to notice in both earthly and heavenly strata the still more gigantic foot prints of the Creator? Was it scientific and in excellent taste for the scholar who in the year I 500 found an aged parchment in the monastery of Corwey, in Westphalia, to cry out so that all Europe heard him, This reads like Tacitus, and unscientific as well as in bad taste for the scholar who finds still more ancient inscriptions.
