Book Adhesion and Adhesives

Download or read book Adhesion and Adhesives written by Anthony J. Kinloch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, or so, the growth in the use of adhesives, especially in ever more technically demanding applications, has been rapid and many major developments in the technology of adhesives have been reported. This growth has also led to attention being focused on somewhat more basic studies of the science of adhesion and adhesives, and in recent years our level of fundamental knowledge concerning the formation and mechanical performance of adhesive joints has increased dramatically. Such studies have, of course, been aided greatly by the development of the tools at the disposal of the investigators. For example, specific surface analytical techniques, such as X-ray photoelectron and secondary-ion mass spectroscopy, and the increasingly sophisticated methods of stress analysis and fracture mechanics have been put to good use in furthering our understanding of the science of adhesion and adhesives. The present book attempts to review the multidisciplined subject of adhesion and adhesives, considering both the science and technology involved in the formation and mechanical performance of adhesive joints. The author would like to thank his friends and colleagues for useful discus sions and help in the preparation of this book. I am particularly grateful to P. Cawley, J. Comyn, W. A. Lees, A. C. Roulin-Moloney, W. C. Wake, J. G. Williams and R. J. Young who have read and commented on various chapters and P. Farr for preparing the diagrams.

Book Carbon Filaments and Nanotubes Common Origins Differing Applications

Download or read book Carbon Filaments and Nanotubes Common Origins Differing Applications written by L.P. Biró and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon filament, vapor grown carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes have been discovered to have remarkable properties, opening they way for their use in intriguing and novel applications in electronics, chemistry and materials science. There are many similarities between nanotubes and filaments, leading many researchers to critically compare the two materials, their production, and potential applications. The two materials are compared and contrasted in depth in the present book, which is a comprehensive review of current research activity, growth mechanisms, physical properties, industrial production, and applications. The structures are discussed using a unified approach, which helps to compare growth mechanisms, contrasting morphological differences, and detailing how novel properties depend on such differences.

Book Atlas of Fibre Fracture and Damage to Textiles

Download or read book Atlas of Fibre Fracture and Damage to Textiles written by J. W. S. Hearle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-07-14 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, retitled, edition of Fibre Failure and Wear of Materials has been updated and expanded to include more examples from work at UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) in the 1990s and to take account of recent research elsewhere. It contains over 500 new micrographs to add to the 1,000 in the first edition and includes two new sections on forensic and medical studies. Based on over 25 years of research at UMIST, the book is concerned with how fibres fail under stress. Until comparatively recently little was known about the way in which fibres break. In this book about 20 different modes of fibre failure are examined. Case studies have been selected both from the traditional uses of textiles in clothing and in household products, such as sheets, towels and carpets and also from the study of failure in textile structures used in industry and engineering, for example seat belts and ropes. This unique collection of more than 1500 scanning electron micrographs and other pictures for identifying failure modes, together with the accompanying explanatory text, provides fibre scientists, polymer scientists and others working in textile research with a better understanding of fracture mechanisms. The book will also be of interest to forensic scientists and medical specialists using fibre implants. Finally, it will help textile technologists and design engineers to manufacture improved textile products and to use them in ways which will maximise their life span.
