Book Nonequilibrium Processes in the Planetary and Cometary Atmospheres Theory and Applications

Download or read book Nonequilibrium Processes in the Planetary and Cometary Atmospheres Theory and Applications written by Mikhail Ya. Marov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the approach to the kinetic simulation of nonequilib rium processes in the planetary atmospheres which the authors developed and dealt with since the 1970s. The results of this study, which are focused on the nonequilibrium collisional processes in the atmospheres of planets and comets, are thoroughly reviewed and discussed. Many specific problems of atmospheric modeling, involving numerical evaluation of aeronomic pro cesses, are addressed and compared with the available experimental data. The kinetic approach proved to be especially effective to model the in teraction of the incident shortwave solar radiation with the rarefied gas of planetary upper atmospheres. It involves various processes of photolysis, en ergetic electron impacts, and accompanying numerous chemical reactions, as well as processes occurring in the intermediate ("transition") zones of planetary and cometary gas envelopes. The underlying mathematical treat ment is based on the stochastic approach for the solution of the Boltzmann type equation and implies the development of the efficient algorithms for its computer simulation. Some results of this study were previously summa rized in the monograph issued in Russian (Marov et al. , 1990) and later in the review paper published in Space Science Reviews (Marov et al. , 1996). The basic principles of stochastic simulation were first developed in the field of rarefied gas dynamics and were successfully applied to the solution of some engineering problems of aerodynamics and heat transfer.

Book Physics Of Comets 2nd Edition

Download or read book Physics Of Comets 2nd Edition written by K S Krishna Swamy and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-05-03 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Comet Halley in 1986 was a tremendous success for cometary science. In March of that year, six spacecrafts passed through Comet Halley as close as 600 km from the nucleus and made the in situ measurements of various kinds. These space missions to Comet Halley and that of the ICE spacecraft to Comet Giacobini-Zinner combined with studies, both ground-based and above the atmosphere, have increased our knowledge of cometary science in a dramatic way. This new edition of Physics of Comets incorporates these new and exciting findings. The emphasis of the book is on the physical processes operating in a cometary environment. It discusses up-to-date observations, methods and results based on the study of various comets. The subject is developed in a systematic manner covering various aspects of cometary phenomena. This book may serve as a text book for students, and as reference material for researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paperback. Two years after comet Halley was intensely studied during its passage through the inner solar system a new, more detailed picture of comets is emerging through the wealth of data. This volume records the continuing process of scientific discussion regarding the mystery of comets. Approximately one third of the papers are dedicated to various aspects of the nucleus which is in the centre of the cometary phenomenon, but which is hidden from earthly observations. The remaining sections discuss cometary aeronomy, gas and dust emissions and plasma effects associated with the interactions with cometary environs. The authors represent a large number of countries and organizations, most of them having played prominent roles in space missions to comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner.

Book Physics and Chemistry of Comets

Download or read book Physics and Chemistry of Comets written by Walter F. Huebner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As this excellent book demonstrates, the study of comets has now reached the fas cinating stage where we understand comets in general simple tenns while, at the same time, we are uncertain about practically all the details of cometary nature, structure, processes, and origin. In every aspect, even including dynamics, a choice among several or many competing theories is made impossible simply by the lack of detailed knowledge. The space missions, snapshot studies of two comets, partic ularly the one that immortalizes the name of Sir Edmund Halley, have produced a huge mass of valuable new infonnation and a number of surprises. Nonetheless, we face the tantalizing realization that we have obtained only a fleeting glance at two of perhaps a hundred billion (lOll) or more comets with possibly differing natures, origins, and physical histories. To my personal satisfaction, comets seem to have discrete nuclei made up of dirty snowballs, as I concluded four decades ago, but perhaps they are more like frozen rubbish piles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IAU symposium No. 150 "Astrochemistry of Cosmic Phenomena" was held at the beautiful and scenic town of Campos do Jordao, Sao Paulo, Brazil from August 5 to 9, 1991, and was attended by 111 registered participants with 17 accompanied guests from 19 countries. The symposium had a wide ranging discussion of the chemistry of astronomical environments with an emphasis on the description of molecular processes that critically influence the nature and evolution of astronomical objects and the identification of specific observations that directly address significant astronomical questions. The subject areas of the symposium included atomic and molecular processes at low and high temperatures and photon interactions, the chemical structure of molecular clouds in the Milky Way and in external galaxies, the chemistry of outflows and their interactions with the interstellar medium, the chemical connections between the interstellar medium and the solar system and pregalactic chemistry. The scientific programme comprised of review talks and con tributed papers, with a general introduction by Professor A. Dalgarno and a final overview of the whole symposium by Professor D. A. Williams. Financial supports from the Sao Paulo State Foundation Support (FAPESP), Brazilian National Research Council(CNPq), Finance Company of Studies and Projects (FINEP), Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics of University of Sao Paulo (IAG-USP) and Inter national Astronomical Union (IAU) are greatfully acknowledged. I am greatly indebted to Professor A.

Download or read book Comets II written by Michel C. Festou and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2004-11-01 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of comets is a field that has seen tremendous advances in recent years, far surpassing the knowledge reflected in the original Comets volume published as part of the Space Science Series in 1982. This new volume, with more than seventy contributing authors, represents the first complete overview of comet science in more than a decade and contains the most extensive collection of knowledge yet assembled in the field. Comets II situates comet science in the global context of astrophysics for the first time by beginning with a series of chapters that describe the connection between stars and planets. It continues with a presentation of the formation and evolution of planetary systems, enabling the reader to clearly see the key role played in our own solar system by the icy planetesimals that were the seeds of the giant planets and transneptunian objects. The book presents the key results obtained during the 1990s, in particular those collected during the apparition of the exceptional comets C/Hyakutake and C/Hale-Bopp in 1996-1997. The latest results obtained from the in situ exploration of comets P/Borrelly and P/Wild 2 are also discussed in detail. Each topic of is designed to be accessible to students or young researchers looking for basic, yet detailed, complete and accurate, information on comet science. With its emphasis on the origin of theories and the future of research, Comets II will enable scientists to make connections across disciplinary boundaries and will set the stage for discovery and new understanding in the coming years.
