Book Atmospheric Temperature Profiles from Earth Limb Infrared Measurements

Download or read book Atmospheric Temperature Profiles from Earth Limb Infrared Measurements written by R. D. Harris and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work accomplished on the retrieval of stratospheric temperature and density profiles from remote earth limb-view infrared radiation measurements. Temperature or density can be retrieved in a routine manner. A model based on two rotational lines of C02 was developed to retrieve simultaneously both temperature and density. This model is running on a CRAY-1 Computer but needs additional verification. An investigation of alternative methods to calculate infrared transmittance has showed that an interpolation scheme does not work for limb-view geometrics with a subsequent potential savings in computer time of one thousand or better. Though the concept has been proved, the ultimate accuracy of this method has still to be evaluated.

Book Atmospheric Temperature Profiles by Ground based Infrared Spectrometer Measurements

Download or read book Atmospheric Temperature Profiles by Ground based Infrared Spectrometer Measurements written by Jon M. Saul and published by . This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method to recover atmospheric temperature profiles using a ground- based Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer was investigated. The method used a difference form of the radiative transfer equation, a Bomem MR series Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer to collect atmospheric radiance values, and the Phillips Laboratory Expert- assisted User Software (PLEXUS) atmospheric radiance model, to recover an atmospheric temperature profile. The method researched uses radiance values from both the spectrometer measurements and the atmospheric model, along with kernel functions calculated by the atmospheric model as input to a difference form of the radiation transfer equation. From this the change in brightness temperatures was determined. The method assumes that the actual brightness temperature profile is a summation of a standard or reference brightness temperature profile plus some change in the brightness temperature. The brightness temperature profile used by the atmospheric model is the reference brightness temperature profile. Planck's Law was employed to transform the calculated brightness temperature function into a temperature function. A temperature profile was retrieved, although significant differences existed between the recovered temperature profile and a radiosonde recovered temperature profile.

Book Atmospheric Temperature Profiles of the Northern Hemisphere

Download or read book Atmospheric Temperature Profiles of the Northern Hemisphere written by Young Yee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than three decades, the US Standard Atmosphere has been used by researchers and professionals in many areas of aeronautics and atmospheric sciences. It is an idealized, all season average temperature profile of the earth's atmosphere. But today's modern day and sophisticated global applications require more extensive representations of the mean temperature profile. This book is a global augmentation of the climatological tropospheric temperature profiles in the Northern Hemisphere for different latitude belts and seasons. There are 72 mean temperature profile tables from the surface up to 10 kilometers in height that represent the four seasons for different latitudinal belts (5° N, 10° N , 15° N, 20° N, 25° N, 30° N, 35° N, 40° N, 45° N, 50° N, 55° N, 60° N, 65° N, 70° N, 75° N, 80° N, 85° N). The model is based on a neural network algorithm that uses archived radiosonde data, retrieved temperature profiles from remote sensors, and the solar insolation at the top of the earth's atmosphere. It is the most comprehensive book of mean seasonal tropospheric temperature profiles to date. It will be an indispensible reference to the aeronautic and meteorological industries worldwide as well as an easy-to-use guide for climatologists, meteorologists, aeronautic engineers, researchers and aviators.

Book Measurement of the Infrared Horizon of the Earth

Download or read book Measurement of the Infrared Horizon of the Earth written by R. G. Walker and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiance measurements of the Earth's horizon in three infrared spectral regions were made during two Aerobee rocket flights at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. Preliminary results indicate equivalent blackbody radiation temperatures in the CO2 band (14.0 - 15.6 microns) varied from 231K to 239K; in the atmospheric window region (10.2 - 11.8 microns) from 205K to 287K; and in the rotational water vapor band (19.5 - 31.8 microns) from 206K to 239K. Numerous dropouts due to clouds are apparent in the atmospheric window and water vapor bands, while no such effect is evident in the CO2 band. The infrared radiometer, stellar aspect sensor and vehicle attitude control system are described, and actual traces of the horizon profiles and outputs from the stellar aspect system are included.
