This book investigates the application of the PlasmaStream atmospheric plasma jet system to deposit novel anti-fouling coatings. The book consists of eight chapters which could be categorised into three major sections. Firstly, the use of plasma polymerised primer to achieve up to 15-fold enhancement in the adhesion of anti-fouling silicone elastomers to steel is reported. Secondly, the anti-fouling performances of atmospheric plasma deposited superhydrophobic Nano coatings, evaluated both in the laboratory, and in industrial processes are detailed. A new ultrasonic abrasion technique, developed for evaluating the mechanical performance of these Nano coatings is also reported in this section. Finally, the physics and chemistry of the plasma jet system was studied using thermal, electrical and optical measurements. The book ends by summarising the main conclusions drawn from this study and recommends potential areas for future research."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric plasma enables plasma assisted coating deposition in ambient air at low temperature on large and/or complex geometry substrates. It has huge potential for coating synthesis and materials surface treatment at lower cost without the necessity of vacuum equipment, for applications of energy, display, aerospace, etc. In this dissertation, I present the results of atmospheric plasma deposition of transparent hard protective coatings on polymers. In order to deposit high quality coatings, we find that the interaction between atmospheric plasma, coating, and polymer substrate should all be optimized. Firstly, I studied the interaction between atmospheric plasma and polymer substrates. Atmospheric plasma was used to pretreat polycarbonate and stretched poly(methyl methacrylate) surfaces in order to enhance the adhesion of polymers to inorganic coatings. The treatment time and the chemical structure of the polymers were found to be important factors. For polycarbonate, a short treatment increased the adhesion energy by four times, while longer treatment resulted in low molecular-weight species formation and decreased adhesion. Next, I deposited dense silica coatings on polymers using atmospheric plasma. The coating deposition rate, molecular network structure, density, Young's modulus and adhesion to polymers exhibited a strong dependence on the precursor delivery temperature and rate, and the functionality and number of silicon atoms in the precursor molecules. The highest Young's modulus of the atmospheric plasma silica was four times higher than that of commercial sol-gel polysiloxane coatings. After that, I successfully deposited carbon-bridged hybrid organosilicate coating using atmospheric plasma, with the ethyl bridges incorporated in the silicate network under the ambient air environment. These coatings doubled the adhesion energy to polymers due to the molecular bridging effect, compared to commercial sol-gel polysiloxane coatings. Finally, I deposited a hard, adhesive, and highly transparent bilayer structure on polymers, with the bottom layer highly adhesive to polymer and the top layer hard to resist scratches. The method overcomes the challenge of fabricating coatings with high mechanical and interfacial properties in a one-step process. The bilayer structure exhibited ~ 100% transmittance in the visible wavelength range and no sacrifice of the hard or adhesive properties of the single sub-layers.

As fabricated components become smaller and more complex, the properties of the materials' surface take on greater importance. Thin coatings play a key role in tailoring surfaces to give them the desired hardness, wear resistance, chemical inertness, and electrical characteristics. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings possess an array of desirable properties, including outstanding abrasion and wear resistance, chemical inertness, hardness, a low coefficient of friction and exceptionally high dielectric strength [14-22]. Diamond-like carbon is considered to be an amorphous material, containing a mixture of sp2 and sp3 bonded carbon. Based on the percentage of sp3 carbon and the hydrogen content, four different types of DLC coatings have been identified: tetrahedral carbon (ta-C), hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) hard, a-C:H soft, and hydrogenated tetrahedral carbon (ta-C:H) [20,24,25]. Possessing the highest hardness of 80 GPa, ta-C possesses an sp3 carbon content of 80 to 88u%, and no appreciable hydrogen content whereas a-C:H soft possesses a hardness of less than 10 GPa, contains an sp3 carbon content of 60% and a hydrogen content between 30 to 50%. Methods used to deposit DLC coatings include ion beam deposition, cathodic arc spray, pulsed laser ablation, argon ion sputtering, and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition [73-83]. Researchers contend that several advantages exist when depositing DLC coatings in a low-pressure environment. For example, ion beam processes are widely utilized since the ion bombardment is thought to promote denser sp3-bonded carbon networks. Other processes, such as sputtering, are better suited for coating large parts [29,30,44]. However, the deposition of DLC in a vacuum system has several disadvantages, including high equipment cost and restrictions on the size and shape of material that may be treated. The deposition of DLC at atmospheric pressure has been demonstrated by several researchers. Izake, et al [53] and Novikov and Dymont [54] have demonstrated an electrochemical process that is carried out with organic compounds such as methanol and acetylene dissolved in ammonia. This process requires that the substrates be immersed in the liquid [53-54]. The atmospheric pressure deposition of DLC was also demonstrated by Kulik, et al. utilizing a plasma torch. However, this process requires operating temperatures in excess of 800 oC [55]. In this report, we investigate the deposition of diamond-like carbon films using a low temperature, atmospheric pressure plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process. The films were characterized by solid-state carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) and found to have a ratio of sp2 to sp3 carbon of 43 to 57%. The films were also tested for adhesion, coefficient of friction, and dielectric strength.

Book excerpt: Atmospheric-pressure plasma deposition (APPD) has previously been used to deposit various functional materials including polymeric surface modification layers, transparent conducting oxides, and photo catalytic materials. For many plasma polymerized coatings, reaction occurs via free radical mechanism where the high energy electrons from the plasma activate the olefinic carbon-carbon double bonds - a typical functional group in such precursors. The precursors for such systems are typically inexpensive and readily available and have been used in vacuum PECVD previously. The objectives are to investigate: (1) the effect of plasma power, gas composition and substrate temperature on the Si-based film properties using triethylsilane(TES) as the precursor; and (2) the chemical, mechanical, and optical properties of several experimental matrices based on Design of Experiment (DOE) principals. A simple APPD route has been utilized to deposit Si based films from an inexpensive precursor - Triethylsilane (TES). Preliminary results indicates formation of Si-C & Si-O and Si-O, Si-C & Si-N bonds with oxygen and nitrogen plasmas respectively. N2-O2 plasma showed mixed trend; however oxygen remains a significant portion of all films, despite attempts to minimize exposure to atmosphere. SiN, SiC, and SiO ratios can be modified by the reaction conditions resulting in differing film properties. SE studies revealed that films with SiN bond possess refractive index higher than coatings with Si-O/Si-C bonds. Variable angle reflectance studies showed that SiOCN coatings offer AR properties; however thickness and refractive index optimization of these coatings remains necessary for application as potential AR coatings.

Book excerpt: The method of CVD (chemical vapor deposition) is a versatile technique to fabricate high-quality thin films and structured surfaces in the nanometer regime from the vapor phase. Already widely used for the deposition of inorganic materials in the semiconductor industry, CVD has become the method of choice in many applications to process polymers as well. This highly scalable technique allows for synthesizing high-purity, defect-free films and for systematically tuning their chemical, mechanical and physical properties. In addition, vapor phase processing is critical for the deposition of insoluble materials including fluoropolymers, electrically conductive polymers, and highly crosslinked organic networks. Furthermore, CVD enables the coating of substrates which would otherwise dissolve or swell upon exposure to solvents. The scope of the book encompasses CVD polymerization processes which directly translate the chemical mechanisms of traditional polymer synthesis and organic synthesis in homogeneous liquids into heterogeneous processes for the modification of solid surfaces. The book is structured into four parts, complemented by an introductory overview of the diverse process strategies for CVD of polymeric materials.
