Book Atmospheric Effects Upon Laser Beam Propagation An Annotated Bibliography

Download or read book Atmospheric Effects Upon Laser Beam Propagation An Annotated Bibliography written by Thomas W. Tuer and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of a literature search on the effects of normally occuring atmospheric molecules, aerosols and turbulence on the propagation of low power lasers is presented in a thoroughly cross referenced bibliography. Included are references to theoretical, experimental and modeling studies that could be relevant to developing models (and their required data bases) for the purpose of establishing comprehensive safety standards for laser illumination of the human eye. Two separate computerized literature searches (with extensive manual editing) were utilized, as well as other sources, to locate these references. Current and planned efforts by several key researchers are also described.

Book Power Beaming History Theory And Practice

Download or read book Power Beaming History Theory And Practice written by Paul Jaffe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power beaming is the ability to move energy without moving or employing mass between an energy input and energy output. It is an emerging technology that could reshape how we generate and distribute energy and how our devices and autonomous systems are powered. This comprehensive compendium provides the foundation needed for researchers, technology developers, and end users to understand the promise and challenges for power beaming. By establishing a common nomenclature and conceptual approach to the analysis and assessment of power beaming systems, this unique reference text provides a true status of advancements in the field, and lays the groundwork for fruitful future research and applications.

Book Effects of Atmospheric Inhomogeneity on Long Range Ion Beam Propagation

Download or read book Effects of Atmospheric Inhomogeneity on Long Range Ion Beam Propagation written by Howard W. Bloomberg and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure has been developed to determine the particle energy and current for long range, a high power flux ion beams. The smallest practical energy for a proton beam was found to be 1 GeV for beam propagation between the position of a high altitude aircraft and 100 km. This beam required a current of about 500 A to suppress extensive radial expansion. A theory of radial beam expansion over decades of inhomogeneity is proposed. It defines a scattering quantity W in the high density segment of the beam trajectory. W is related to the relative amount of radial spread due to scattering occurring within a betatron wavelength. The properties of the charge neutralization channel required for effective beam propagation are considered. It is shown that neutralizing electrons may respond to the bare ion beam charge differently at different locations on the trajectory. This has important implications in the creation of such channels. The effects of an imperfect neutralization channel on beam aiming is discussed.

Book Neutral Beam Propagation Effects in the Upper Atmosphere

Download or read book Neutral Beam Propagation Effects in the Upper Atmosphere written by P. Carini and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a simple theoretical model of beam induced stripping of a neutral particle beam as it propagates in the upper atmosphere. A comparison of beam induced stripping with stripping induced by the atmosphere demonstrates that for 1 MeV neutral hydrogen beams propagating at 200 km altitude beam induced stripping is negligible when compared with the stripping of the neutral beam caused by the atmosphere. This model leads to two important conclusions: 1) beam effects will be important only when the neutral beam density is of the same order or larger than the atmospheric density. 2) at high launch altitudes, beam induced stripping will be the dominant energy loss mechanism for neutral beams. Keywords: Neutral beam; Stripping; Ionization; Beam induced stripping; Polarization drift; Cross section.

Book Optical Turbulence Forecasting

Download or read book Optical Turbulence Forecasting written by Edmond M. Dewan and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a tutorial on the effects of atmospheric turbulence upon systems which rely upon the propagation of LASER beams. In addition to providing a simplified presentation of turbulence theory and optical effects, it describes the state of the art of the new technique of radiosonde estimation of index of refraction fluctuations. Suggestions are given for future research which will help to answer current Air Force needs. The feasibility of some laser systems will depend upon the value of r0, the coherence length (which is related to “C2n” which in turn is related to the degree of turbulence). At present, the statistics of “r0” are inadequate.
