Each map covers about 12 hundred miles horizontally and 9 hundred miles vertically or an area of approximately 1 million square miles. The sketches are purposely simple and show a minimum of non railroad detail in order to allow for notations, corrections, and additions. Place names are largely omitted to retain clarity. This series depcits a strong and expanding railway system. It also tends to put the lines in scale and depict them as systems, something which is never done in general atlases.

A large number of the 300 color illustrations have not been published before, maps and stories from around the world will delight not only the railway enthusiast, but appeal to a wider cadre of readers with an interest in nostalgia, history, geography and travel. To some the book will be an informative source of information, to others it is written in a way that highlights the most amazing lost railways in the world, but either way it is a fascinating and unique book.
