This book was released on 1968 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data obtained by daily solar magnetograms made at the Mount Wilson Observatory during 1959 through 1966 have been transformed into isogauss maps of the structure of the photospheric magnetic fields in each solar rotation. These maps are presented as color maps for reference in studies of solar magnetic structures, solar activity, and related fields. (Author).

Book An Atlas of Photospheric Magnetic Field Observations and Computed Coronal Magnetic Fields 1976 1985

Download or read book An Atlas of Photospheric Magnetic Field Observations and Computed Coronal Magnetic Fields 1976 1985 written by J. Todd Hoeksema and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daily magnetogram observations of the large scale photospheric magnetic field have been made. These measurements provide a homogeneous record of the changing solar field through most of Solar Cycle 21. Using the photospheric data, the configuration of the coronal and heliospheric fields can be calculated using a Potential Field -- Source Surface model. This provides a 3 dimensional picture of the heliospheric field evolution during the solar cycle. This note announces the publication of UAG Report 94, an Atlas containing the complete set of synoptic charts of the measured photospheric magnetic field, the computed field at the source surface, and the coefficients of the multipole expansion of the coronal field. The general underlying structures of the solar and heliospheric fields, which determine the environment for solar terrestrial relations and provide the context within which solar activity related events occur, can be approximated from these data. The provision of a homogeneous dataset of the solar magnetic field over nearly an entire sunspot cycle in a convenient, inclusive package will stimulate the studies of the large scale structures of the solar and heliospheric magnetic field, encourage others to consider the relationship of the large scale, ambient field structures to activity on short time scales and smaller spatial scales, and enable the inclusion of the heliospheric field in analyses of solar terrestrial relations.

Book Magnetic Fields in the Solar System

Download or read book Magnetic Fields in the Solar System written by Hermann Lühr and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses and reviews many of the still little understood questions related to the processes underlying planetary magnetic fields and their interaction with the solar wind. With focus on research carried out within the German Priority Program ”PlanetMag”, it also provides an overview of the most recent research in the field. Magnetic fields play an important role in making a planet habitable by protecting the environment from the solar wind. Without the geomagnetic field, for example, life on Earth as we know it would not be possible. And results from recent space missions to Mars and Venus strongly indicate that planetary magnetic fields play a vital role in preventing atmospheric erosion by the solar wind. However, very little is known about the underlying interaction between the solar wind and a planet’s magnetic field. The book takes a synergistic interdisciplinary approach that combines newly developed tools for data acquisition and analysis, computer simulations of planetary interiors and dynamos, models of solar wind interaction, measurement of ancient terrestrial rocks and meteorites, and laboratory investigations.

Book Annotated Atlas of H alpha Synoptic Charts

Download or read book Annotated Atlas of H alpha Synoptic Charts written by P. S. McIntosh and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a record of large-scale solar magnetic fields and solar activity during 130 solar rotations, from November 1964 through July 1974, in the form of H-alpha synoptic charts and accompanying descriptive notes. A new perspective on large-scale magnetic fields is provided by the inference of lines of polarity reversal from the systems of structures visible in H-alpha patrol filtergrams. These structures map the neutral lines in the radial component of solar magnetic fields (McIntosh, 1972a), thereby revealing details of the boundaries to large-scale magnetic fields that are not recorded in magnetograms sensitive to the longitudinal (line-of-sight) component of the fields. This atlas testifies that neutral lines are of themselves important physical features in solar activity. They are associated directly with systems of physical structures. They form continuous lines that often encircle the entire sun. They have lifetimes in excess of 2 years. The neutral-line patterns normally predate, and survive, the occurrence of important centers of sunspot and flare activity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1984 a Summer School on Solar System Plasmas was held at Imperial College with the support of the Science and Engineering Research Council. An excellent group of lecturers was assembled to give a series of basic talks on the various aspects of the subject, aimed at Ph. D. students or researchers from related areas wanting to learn about the plasma physics of the solar system. The students were so appreciative of the lectures that it was decided to write them up as the present book. Traditionally, different areas of solar system science, such as solar and magnetospheric physics, have been studied by separate communities with little contact. However, it has become clear that many common themes cut right across these distinct topics, such as magnetohydrodynamic instabilities and waves, magnetic reconnect ion , convection, dynamo activity and particle acceleration. The plasma parameters may well be quite different in the Sun's atmosphere, a cometary tailor Jupiter's magnetosphere, but many of the basic processes are similar and it is by studying them in different environments that we come to understand them more deeply. Furthermore, direct in situ measurements of plasma properties at one point in the solar wind or the magnetosphere complement the more global view by remote sensing of a similar phenomenon at the Sun.

Download or read book Solar Magnetic Fields written by Jan Olof Stenflo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic fields are responsible for much of the variability and structuring in the universe, but only on the Sun can the basic magnetic field related processes be explored in detail. While several excellent textbooks have established a diagnostic foundation for exploring the physics of unmagnetized stellar atmospheres through spectral analysis, no corresponding treatise for magnetized stellar atmospheres has been available. The present monograph fills this gap. The theoretical foundation for the diagnostics of stellar magnetism is developed from first principles in a comprehensive way, both within the frameworks of classical physics and quantum field theory, together with a presentation of the various solar applications. This textbook can serve as an introduction to solar and stellar magnetism for astronomers and physicists at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level and will also become a resource book for more senior scientists with a general interest in cosmic magnetic fields.
